Earl Sweatshirt Brings His Moody Single ‘2010’ To ‘The Tonight Show’ Stage

Earl Sweatshirt finally found his way to the Tonight Show stage Monday night to promote his new album Sick!, performing the not-quite-nostalgic single “2010.” Ironically, it was just after 2010 that Earl’s rabble-rousing crew Odd Future first made their own television debut on The Tonight Show (albeit minus Earl, who had been shipped off to boarding school in Samoa by his protective mother for his troublemaking activities), menacing host Jimmy Fallon and the audience in a performance Questlove was sure would get the show canceled altogether.

Fortunately, it wasn’t canceled, leaving the path clear for Earl to make his own appearance a little over a decade later. While his performance this time was much more self-contained, with just Earl, his DJ, and the projections on the screen behind him, Earl proves to be sufficient by himself to capture and hold the audience’s attention as he narrates the tumultuous time that led to his absence when Odd Future took over with their unique brand of anti-establishment chaos.

Watch Earl Sweatshirt’s Tonight Show performance of “2010” above and catch earl on the NBA Leather World Tour with Action Bronson and The Alchemist.

Sick! is out now via Warner Records.

Earl Sweatshirt is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Report: James Harden Wants To ‘Explore Other Opportunities Outside Brooklyn’ This Summer

Just over a year ago, James Harden was applying immense pressure on the Rockets to trade him, making it known that his preference was to join Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in Brooklyn. Ultimately, a deal was made that sent the former MVP to the Nets, beginning a full-scale teardown in Houston and, somewhat unwittingly, sparking the rise of the Cleveland Cavaliers for this season.

The expectation was that Brooklyn would fork over big money to extend their new star triumverate this past summer, but when the season arrived, only Kevin Durant had inked an extension. Kyrie Irving’s refusal to get the COVID-19 vaccine, thus making him ineligible to play home games, pulled his extension off the table and puts his future in Brooklyn in question. As for Harden, he opted against signing an extension, choosing instead to pick up his large player option for this season and setting himself up for a four-year deal this summer.

At the time, Harden insisted there was “nothing to worry about” for Brooklyn, and that he had no plans to leave the organization. Now, three months later, there are rumblings that Harden is no longer favored to return to the Nets this summer, as rumors swirl about a potential reunion with Daryl Morey in Philadelphia. According to Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer, Harden has expressed frustrations about his situation in Brooklyn, both in his lack of comfort in living there and the situation he finds himself in with Kyrie not playing home games, and wants to look into “other opportunities outside Brooklyn” when free agency arrives.

Harden remains invested in competing for the title in Brooklyn this season, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the situation. But Harden has recently informed several confidants—including former teammates and coaches—of his interest in exploring other opportunities outside of Brooklyn this summer, league sources told B/R.

Harden has been vocal to Nets figures and close contacts alike about his frustrations regarding Kyrie Irving’s part-time playing status. A recent injury to Kevin Durant has exacerbated the issue, leaving Harden to shoulder the majority of the offensive burden during Brooklyn home games.

His new city could also be an issue. According to multiple sources, Harden has not enjoyed living in Brooklyn, compared to his days as a central Houston magnate. Outside of the change in climate, the chasm between state taxes in New York versus Texas is quite obvious as well.

Fischer makes clear that there has not been a trade request from Harden, but the window for the Nets to win a championship with their Big 3 very well could be down to this season and this season only. Coupled with the recent reports that the Sixers would prefer to wait to deal Ben Simmons until this summer, when they could pursue someone like Harden in a sign-and-trade, and there is an awful lot of smoke out there about Harden rejoining a Morey operation.

Still, there’s a lot of time for things to change, both on the Simmons front in Philly (although something drastic would seemingly have to happen to see him moved in February at this point) and with Harden in Brooklyn. Frustrations in the middle of the season are one thing, but should the Nets win a championship, it wouldn’t be hard to see Harden change his tune about his feelings about Brooklyn and look to return to the Nets.

Mark Cuban Is Using His Billionaire Powers To Dramatically Drive Down Generic Drug Prices, And The Raves Are Pouring In

Some of the billionaire behavior during the pandemic has been, well, not fantastic. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has been blasting off into space penis-shaped rocket and taking joyrides with Captain Kirk while SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has been firing shots at Bezos and making “pp” jokes on Twitter. Meanwhile, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has ventured away on a more altruistic path. To each his own!

Cuban hasn’t been afraid to dip his toes into political and social issues over the years. And what he’s done now could lead to a paradigm shift in the pharmaceutical industry. Actually, Cuban’s newest venture is a huge swing at Big Pharma and makes him the antithesis of Pharma Bro Martin Shkreli. Cuban has launched his own online pharmacy, which he tweeted about with a link to the website where users can buy generic drugs at cost plus a 15% (or so) margin to cover overhead.

As a quickie example, Cuban’s pharmacy is buying drugs directly from manufacturers and selling them for cheap. As in, the generic version of Prozac for less than $4 per month, versus around $20 at a retail pharmacy, and it all adds up. He’s assuring people that they’re adding additional prescription drugs as swiftly as possible, and the company’s even building a Dalllas-based factory to provide injectibles.

People are pretty shook to see their $200 meds go for $20 at Cuban’s company.

And this has led to some “In a world of Elon Musks, be a Mark Cuban” and “In a billionaire world full of Jeff Bezos be a #MarkCuban”-style responses.

Overall, people have nothing but positivity for Cuban doing what Congress hasn’t been able to do despite decades of broken promises and lots of arguing. That is, Cuban’s making life-saving prescriptions affordable and that includes some cancer drugs.

Yep, “mensch” is a good way to put it, and Cuban is saving lives out there.

All The Best New Pop Music From This Week

The best new pop music this week saw some upbeat and reflective releases alike. Charlie Puth returned with his first new song in nearly a year, Conan Gray dropped another vulnerable tune, and Lana Del Rey shared a slow-burning track in last week’s Euphoria episode.

Each week, Uproxx rounds up the best new pop music. Listen up.

Charlie Puth — “Light Switch”

The last we heard from Charlie Puth, he was teaming up with music industry veteran Elton John for a gripping ballad. But now, Puth returns for the first time in 2022 to begin rolling out his third album Charlie with a new, groovy single. His track “Light Switch,” which had been previously teased on TikTok, is a sun-soaked and upbeat tune which shows off his knack for writing carefree love songs.

Conan Gray — “Jigsaw”

Conan Gray hasn’t been slowing down since the release of his 2020 acclaimed debut album Kid Krow, and his new track “Jigsaw” is proof. The song is a delicate and heart-tugging ballad infused with heavy guitars, which match the emotional weight of Gray’s lyrics. “I’d spent my entire life contorting myself and changing everything I used to be in order to make everybody happy,” he said about the vulnerable tune.

Lana Del Rey — “Watercolor Eyes”

Lana Del Rey stayed wildly busy last year between released two full-length albums. She’s now starting off the year with even more music, but rather than rolling out another LP, Lana wrote an atmospheric tune for last week’s episode of the hit HBO show Euphoria. The reflective tune is another one of the singer’s signature piano ballads, featuring washed-out vocals detailing a tumultuous relationship — the kind which Euphoria is full of.

Christina Aguilera, Ozuna — “Santo”

Christina Aguilera returned in a big way this week. The iconic pop singer dropped the fiery EP La Fuerza, a Spanish-language project which includes the pumped-up Ozuna collaboration “Santo.” Much like the remainder of the project, “Santo” features rhythmic instrumentals and a wildly catchy chorus. “Latin music has always been rooted in me and my childhood… and once that connection is there it’s with you forever,” the singer said about her EP. “‘La Fuerza’ is a project for myself, my roots, and my kids – so they can sense a deeper level of who they are.”

Griff, Sigrid — “Head On Fire”

UK pop singer Griff teamed up with Norwegian singer Sigrid for the empowered tune “Head On Fire” this week. Featuring a driving beat, the two songwriters harmonize with feel-good lyrics that make it clear they are having fun with the song. About the single, Sigrid said it’s “about that feeling when you meet someone who just flips everything upside down and you can’t focus on anything else but that person.”

Holly Humberstone — “London Is Loney”

Rising pop sensation Holly Humberstone is gearing up for a big year following the release of her November EP The Walls Are Way Too Thin. But before she sets out on a tour with Olivia Rodrigo and takes the Coachella stage, Humberstone shares the new, reflective track “London Is Lonely.” The song hits on Humberstone’s ability to craft universally relatable songs, and her new, nostalgia-inducing single is no different. Sharing her inspiration behind the song, Humberstone notes that the title says it all. “I kind of lost myself in the city. I didn’t exactly know who I was anymore, and so going home and writing felt like my safe space to process everything.”

Gayle — “Ur Just Horny”

After experiencing a massive breakout moment on TikTok with her kiss-off tune “Abcdefu,” rising star Gayle is back with her new track “Ur Just Horny.” The revved-up single marks a strong follow-up to her debut track and is a way for Gayle to showcase her charismatic songwriting. This time, Gayle sings of the time she “crossed the line in a friendship” she thought was platonic and realized they “didn’t want to be my friend they just wanted to get into my pants.”

Sabrina Claudio — “Put On Repeat”

Acclaimed songwriter Sabrina Claudio offered patient fans her first bit of new music in nearly two years this week. Her sultry, dark-pop track “Put On Repeat” is a perfect way to flex her honeyed vocals over a simmering beat. According to Claudio, the new song is a “representation of the overall mood of the new music I’m excited to share this year.”

Kaina — “Apple”

Chicago-based songwriter Kaina dropped the effervescent track “Apple” this week to preview her upcoming album It Was A Home. The dreamy and groove-driven tune is Kaina’s way of having fun with music as an artistic medium, shown through its lively beat and playful lyrics. “Like most people I often overthink a lot and it’s sort of just a silly song about wanting to appreciate the way I exist at the purest form possible,” she said about the single.

Set It Off — “Projector”

For Set It Off’s upcoming LP Elsewhere, the trio aim to tap into their pop songwriting skills, and their new track “Projector” is an adrenaline-pumping move in the right direction. Featuring bright chords and wildly energetic lyrical delivery, Set It Off craft an anthem for those wanting to dispel peoples’ negative energy. “I just want people to be able to turn this up as loud as it can go and vent about all those irritating people in their lives,” vocalist Cody Carson noted about the upbeat tune.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Trades Lannister Armor For A Chef’s Coat In ‘A Taste Of Hunger’

The first thing you notice about Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is, well, let’s just acknowledge the elephant in the room here: he’s very handsome. The Danish actor is allegedly 51, though he could easily be confused for a 30-something male model with a few grey patches added to make him look distinguished. It’s easy to see why he was cast as the poison-pilled Prince Valiant in Game Of Thrones, Jaime Lannister, with golden boy looks so symmetrical that they ride the line between endearing and offputting.

Coster-Waldau will probably be synonymous with Jaime Lannister for a few years to come, at least with English-speaking audiences, a role for which he was nominated for an Emmy, eventually losing to his costar Peter Dinklage. But anyone who can play a native English speaker so convincingly without being one is clearly more than just handsome. It always blows my mostly-monolingual American mind a little bit when an actor with a noticeable Danish accent can lose that accent for a role.

This month Coster-Waldau is putting those talents (and yes, that enviable jawline) towards A Taste Of Hunger, director Christoffer Boe’s film about a single-minded chef pursuing a Michelin star while trying to balance a marriage that blurs the line between work and pleasure (with costar Katrine Gries-Rosenthal, a dead ringer for Sopranos-era Jamie Lynn Sigler). Jaime Lannister was a character we first met when he was tossing a child out of a window, who throughout the course of the show eventually becomes at least medium sympathetic. In A Taste Of Hunger, Coster-Waldau displays that same knack for adding levels, to a character who could easily come off two-dimensional. “Carsten” is driven and demanding, trying to compete in the cutthroat world of Copenhagen fine dining.

When the film opens in Carsten’s airy kitchen workshop, filled with glass jars of pickled ingredients and other food experiments, most food-television enthusiasts will instantly think of Noma, the world-famous three-Michelin-starred Copenhagen restaurant featured in countless food shows. Perhaps not quite to the degree that Pig imagines a secret underground of truffle purveyors in Portland, A Taste Of Hunger applies a heightened drama to the Copenhagen Michelin race, with a script co-written by Tobias Lindholm, of Another Round and The Hunt.

We spoke to Coster-Waldau this week, about food, acting, and dialect coaches.

You play a chef in this movie — are you a big food guy?

I love to eat, yes. I’m not a great chef myself. I mean, I’ll cook, I cook for my family, but I would not pick me as the go-to guy. I can provide sustenance. It’s not an emotional experience to eat my food.

Did you get to do any training or preparation for the movie?

Oh, I did, I was very lucky. I got to spend time with a couple of fantastic chefs. I mean, one guy called Rasmus (Kofoed), here in Copenhagen, he won the Bocuse d’Or, which is like world championship of chefs, years back, and now he has a three-star Michelin rated restaurant called Geranium here in Copenhagen. He was just so gracious, and he took me in, and I spent time just to understand the passion, the perseverance, the work ethic that goes into creating restaurants at that level. I even got to put on the outfit, and I was in the kitchen with the other chefs. It was a real treat. I didn’t ruin anyone’s food though.

Did he up your home cooking game at all?

Eh… a little bit. I mean, I think that would be the equivalent of never having played basketball before and then starting with being taught by Stephen Curry, “Go play with Steph.” I’m not sure it would help that much. I think these should start on a different level. I saw some stuff, and I got some tools that I could use, but there’s a way to go before I’m ready for the three-star game.

The movie’s about the Copenhagen fine dining scene. Is it as competitive in real life, or do you think it’s heightened for dramatic effect in the movie?

Well, I think it is as competitive, it’s also… I mean, God knows it’s not easier now after this pandemic. They’re dropping left, right, and center, but we were very lucky. We had all the extras that are in my character’s restaurant, all came from the restaurant business, so I could constantly ask them about, “What would this guy do here? Is it believable if he loses his cool? Have you experienced something like this?” Because there’s a couple of scenes where my character loses his cool, and he fires a guy, and they were all like saying, “Yeah, yeah, this happens all the time.” Because there is just a lot of pressure, and the hours are insane. And as you say, it is competitive.

Did you ever do any work in restaurants when you were coming up as a young actor?

No, I never did that. I worked in various stores, but never in a restaurant.

In hanging out with those young chefs, did you see any similarities between that lifestyle and being an actor?

Well, I think that there are similarities. The dedication that you need to succeed… A great restaurant is more than just food, it’s also telling a story in many ways. I mean, that kind of thing, like when I was young, we had our daughters, and I was very ambitious, so that whole thing, but I think that goes for anyone. When you’re young, you’re trying to make your way in life, and then when you have a family, you don’t want to compromise, but you have to. I think that’s what I loved about this movie. It’s not a simple thing. It’s not like, “Oh, he’s the good guy, and she’s the bad guy,” I mean, they’re in this together, and they’re trying to find their way.

So your character, and your wife’s character in the movie, you guys sort of bond over this late-night hot dog kind of thing. Is that pretty typical late-night food in Denmark? What are the late-night foods besides a hot dog?

I mean, that’s one of them, and then of course you have a slice of pizza, kebab, that kind of stuff. But in Denmark, the hotdog stand is a very specific thing.

In the hot dog scene, I think you guys put, what was it, mayo, ketchup, and pickles? Is that a pretty standard Danish hot dog topping?

That’s it. Custard as well [I think he meant to say mustard here, but I’m not entirely sure, -Ed.], and there’s different ways you can do it, but yeah. That’s what you do, it’s the full — if you want to get the arteries clogging, that’s what you get. Fuck up those arteries.

When you’re shooting outside of Denmark, are there local foods that you miss?

I don’t know… I mean, usually the bread is what I miss.

Special kinds, or just generally you think the bread is better in Denmark?

Well, I mean, we’ve got good bread [generally], but [specifically] it’s rye bread, just really dark, dark rye bread. It’s something you grow up on here. But no, when I travel, because I’ve been very lucky to travel a lot of places, mostly I like to go and experience whatever they have to offer.

That’s the fun of going to different places for me. Are there any different foods that you’ve discovered, and stick out in your mind, or that you’ve brought back from places that you’ve been able to shoot?

Oh, I wish I could bring them back and then recreate them, but that’s not going to happen. I was recently in Mexico, and we were shooting in this small town, and there was just this… you know that thing, we get tacos everywhere, and in LA, there are taco stands there. But sometimes it’s also the whole, the location definitely played into it, but it was just one of the most delicious tacos I’ve ever had. I don’t know why, I’m sure it was the location, and then maybe they had some special thing they put on it. But I mean, for me, it’s not about it being in a fancy restaurant, necessarily. I think we all know that when we travel, it’s not necessarily, “Oh, we went to this incredibly nice restaurant,” but it’s like, “Oh no, we went to this restaurant, and then we met this waiter, and he was just the nicest guy, and we got talking to him…” It’s always the whole thing, right?

Yeah, the full experience. It seems like you shift pretty seamlessly between English roles and Danish ones, is there a lot of work that you have to put in to be able to do that?

I mean, obviously I have, depending on what kind of part, I will have someone to help me out with getting accents right. The dialect coaching and stuff, so I don’t sound like I come from the same place every time. But no, I never think of it like going back and forth. Usually, it’s just for me is like, “Oh, this script is really cool. It happens to be an English character, or an American, or a Danish character.” The actual shoot obviously is different, because there are cultural differences as always. But yes, I guess it is kind of seamless, I don’t think too much about it.

Other actors, when they’re Scandinavian, I’ll probably notice [the accent] at a certain point, just with certain words. But I don’t remember ever noticing that in your English roles.

That’s good. I remember living in London 25 years ago, and I was so upset every time I was caught out, and obviously I was caught out all the time. But that made me work even harder to try to crack that thing. I’m still working on it, but it is part of it of course. There are a lot of things that go into it. I don’t want that part of it to take you out of the illusion.

What is the film industry like in Denmark? Is it small enough that you sort of know each other? Is there a pride in it, where you root for other Danish filmmakers and actors?

Oh, well, it’s a fantastic film industry. Obviously, I’m biased, but I think we have some great, great directors. We have a long tradition, we have the oldest studio in the world, is here in Copenhagen. Last year, we won Best Foreign for Another Round, which is a wonderful movie. This year, we have a great movie called Flee, which is in contention [on which Nikolaj is an executive producer -Ed]. Fingers crossed it’ll get a nomination. So yeah, it’s a great film industry.

A Taste Of Hunger’ hits theaters and OnDemand platforms January 28th. Vince Mancini is on Twitter. You can access his archive of reviews here.

ASAP Rocky, J. Cole, And Future Will Headline Rolling Loud’s Inaugural Event In Portugal

After two years’ delay, Rolling Loud’s inaugural Portugal edition has a new date, July 6-8, 2022, and a new headliner joining mainstays ASAP Rocky and Future, who were carried over from the two previous lineup announcements for 2020 and 2021. This time, they’ll be joined by J. Cole after 2020 headliner DaBaby landed in hot water over his Rolling Loud Miami appearance in 2021 and Wiz Khalifa, the planned third headliner for the postponed 2021 edition of the Portugal fest, dropped out for unknown reasons.

If the festival doesn’t get pushed back again, it’ll be the first Europe-based edition of the popular traveling hip-hop event, which has also taken over its hometown, Miami, New York, Los Angeles, and the Bay Area in recent years. The most recent iteration of the festival was held in December 2021 at the National Orange Show event center in San Bernardino, headlined by J. Cole, Future, and Kid Cudi.

The new lineup for Portugal has made some changes down the flyer, as well. People Hated ‘SNL’ Star James Austin Johnson’s Incredible Trump Impression Until He ‘Realized’ Something

It took until he was out of the White House, but SNL finally found its Donald Trump in James Austin Johnson. The comedian, who became a viral star for his freakishly accurate impression of the former-president’s stream-of-consciousness monologues (he also gave us one of the greatest tweets of all-time), was added to the sketch show before season 47, and made an immediate splash. On Monday’s Late Night with Seth Meyers, Johnson shared his process behind nailing Trump’s particular way of speaking.

“The first times that I tried doing the Trump, it just sort of reflected my liberal black-sheep anger. I mean, ‘We’re gonna kill everybody.’ I was saying stuff that no one wanted to hear, or I’d say things he actually said. And I just remember the audience always yanking back, especially as I got the voice,” he said. “As I started sounding like him, and then I would just say horrific things, people hated it.” So Johnson tried a different tactic.

“At some point, I realized, ‘Oh, the stuff that he’s talking about, we got over hundreds of years ago.’ He’s bringing up these issues that we don’t even think about anymore, so that’s when I started abstracting him. I made him like a guy talking about the wizard on the hill,” he explained before launching into an impression of Trump rambling about dragons, swords, and amulets. “And that’s when I started getting the laughs with it.”

There’s also talk of “weird throat noises.”

Paris Hilton And Jimmy Fallon Pumping NFTs In Front Of His Confused Audience Will Probably Fill Your Cringe Quota For The Week

Following in the footsteps of Matt Damon and Reese Witherspoon, reality TV star/DJ Paris Hilton has taken a huge dive into the world of cryptocurrency, but she’s not exactly winning people over. The hotel heiress stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday night where the two did their best to promote NFTs. Unfortunately, for them, the audience had no idea what they were talking about and were practically bored to tears.

During the awkward segment, Paris and Jimmy show off some Bored Ape NFTs, and at one point, Paris even gifts some NFTs to the audience, who again, had no idea what the heck was happening. To make things even more cringe, Paris also declared that the Metaverse is the “future of partying.”

It wasn’t exactly one of The Tonight Show‘s best moments, but it did lead to a hilarious field day on social media where people went to town on what Hilton and Fallon’s double endorsement of NFTs means for the cryptocurrency movement. Judging by the reactions, it’s probably nothing good.

Even people who are deep into NFTs weren’t exactly thrilled with the segment, which didn’t do the cryptocurrency movement any favors in not looking like a weird scam where people pay exorbitant amounts of money for cartoon apes.

Chile’s President Is Mad At Damon Albarn Over Taylor Swift And Other Leaders Weighed In, Too

The story that has been dominating the music news cycle of the past 24 hours is that Damon Albarn said of Taylor Swift in a recent interview, “She doesn’t write her own songs.” That drew responses from Swift and people close to her (collaborators Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner), and now prominent folks from outside of the music world are also chiming in, perhaps the most notable of them being Chile’s soon-to-be president.

Gabriel Boric Font, who is currently the country’s president-elect and is set to be inaugurated on March 11, responded to Swift’s tweet by writing, “Here in Chile you have a huge group of supporters who knows that you write you own songs from the heart. Dont take seriously guys that need to insult or lie to get attention. Hugs from the south Taylor.”

Zarah Sultana, a British politician who serves as the Member Of Parliament (MP) for Coventry South, replied to Boric’s tweet, “Just came here to show Taylor solidarity and found @gabrielboric. Love that international socialist Swiftie power!”

Meanwhile, Thomas Simons, better known by his online alias TommyInnit, also responded to Swift. Simons is a 17-year-old video game streamer who makes content about Minecraft and has amassed just shy of 7 million followers on Twitch, making him the most-followed Minecraft streamer on the platform. So, while he’s not a political leader, he has major notoriety and influence among a significant audience.

He tweeted, “On behalf of the entire Minecraft communtiy Taylor, we support you.”

Aside from that, Swift also got love from the Empire State Building, Tidal, and Eve 6, so check those tweets out below.
