The Debate Over Too Much Sex On Screen Is About Women’s Pleasure

When Penn Badgley revealed he’d asked producers on his hit Netflix show You to cut down the number of on-screen intimacy scenes required of his character – the serial-killing, book-loving, window-peeping Joe Goldberg — it reignited a debate that’s been raging for decades. Some fans bemoaned both Badgley’s choice and his reasoning for it – the importance of fidelity in his real-life marriage to Domino Kirke-Badgley. They accused the actor of conflating the performance of intimacy, choreographed and consented to, with the actual act of adultery. Others applauded Badgley for standing firm in his values and setting personal boundaries on set. The terminally online used the controversy to unseal a can of worms that have been squirming beneath our society’s puritanical foundations for quite a while now.

Is there too much sex on screen?

The answer to that question is, as it’s always been, relative. To the shows you watch. The streaming platforms you subscribe to. The movies you buy tickets to see. It’s also biased – based on an individual’s attitudes towards sex and nudity that the industry as a whole just can’t afford to cater to. It’s a pointless query to ask with an unsatisfying answer, hence why it continues to pop up every few years.

The more interesting question is why now? Why, with the rise of intimacy coordinators, the praise heaped upon sex scenes filmed with the female gaze in mind, and the abundance of storytellers centering women’s sexual experiences on-screen (the good, the bad, and the downright awkward), are we dipping back into this bone-dry discourse well.

With so much progress made, why are we bothered by seeing sex on screen now?

I thought Badgley’s retroactive version of an intimacy rider would be the viral hook of this story when it was pitched weeks ago. But then, Swarm happened. The psychological thriller on Amazon Prime is filled to the brim with violence, gore, drugs, cults, and Beyonce references but the most performative pearl-clutching on social media happened in response to actress Chloe Bailey’s brief sex scene in the show’s premiere episode. Save a glimpse of her bare buttocks and co-star Damson Idris’ chest, there was barely any nudity and minimal dialogue – most of it moans and grunts happening off-camera as the audience zeroed in on Dre’s (Dominique Fishback) reaction to watching the romp. It was uncomfortable to sit through, cringe-worthy even, not because it depicted two consenting partners engaging in sex in the privacy of ones’ home but because of Dre’s fascination with and apathy towards the act.

Still, the blowback landed at Bailey’s feet with fans questioning why she’d consent to having sex on screen and making misogynistic comments that felt, well, gross. Idris’ involvement in the scene, interestingly enough, was never brought up. The reactionary takes felt reminiscent of early aughts attitudes when slut-shaming was still en vogue and sex sold, but only if it satisfied the male ego.

“For so long, people have been told that there is one ‘goal’ when having sex, and that is to please your male partner if you are in a heterosexual relationship – which, let’s face it, has been the norm in most TV or movie programming in recent decades,” Shan Boodram, a sex educator and Bumble’s Sex and Relationship expert, tells UPROXX.

Sex on screen has a long and storied history – from the enforcement of the Hays Code, which meant even married couples on screen had to sleep in separate twin beds and couldn’t utter the word “pregnant” on air (see I Love Lucy), to the revolutionary (yet still flawed) depictions gifted by Carrie Bradshaw and her group of unapologetically horny friends on HBO’s Sex and the City, to Lena Dunham’s Girls, a show that depicted intimacy in all its various shapes and sizes, a pedestrian element of living instead of a bit of salacious ratings tinder.

But only recently has female pleasure been pushed to the forefront.

“We are really looking at sex on screen through a different lens now than the one that we were before,” Intimacy Coordinator Lizzy Talbot tells UPROXX. “Our perspective on what makes a good sex scene has changed dramatically. We’re not just seeing heterosexual penetrative sex anymore where there’s an orgasm of both people from penetrative sex very quickly. We’re seeing a lot more foreplay, we’re seeing a lot more buildup. We’re seeing real relationships being reflected on screen, which I don’t think that they really were to this point before.”

Shows like Bridgerton (which Talbot works on) and Sex Education have not only made sex enjoyable to watch on screen for female-identifying audiences, they’ve educated viewers on aspects of intimacy that aren’t talked about enough. Talbot says that, although she sees occasional negativity on social media from show watchers, it’s the scenes that teach us something – about female pleasure or the steamy acts covered under the wide umbrella of “sex” – that get the biggest response.

“You can talk about sex, but then when you see it, and when you see it done in a really positive way with lots of consent involved, I think that’s what has an impact,” Talbot says. “Where do you see excellent portrayals of consent in sex [i.e. partners discussing their boundaries, kinks, and rules for safety] on screen prior to 2017 and 2018? There’s not that much out there.”

Boodram echoes that sentiment.

“I think we are very accustomed to seeing women enjoy sex on screen but through the lens of what brings pleasure to a man,” she adds. “To me, a lot of mainstream media sex is often a fantasy world where sex is catered to a man’s sexual needs, and somehow everything he likes is exactly what she desires. I think the difference now is that the media is showing that women can receive pleasure in ways that don’t directly benefit men or their egos.”

So, if shows like Insecure and Harlem (two examples Boodram lists as doing sex well on screen) and romance series like Outlander and Normal People are finally getting female pleasure right – why the renewed outcry over sex on screen?

“What I think is happening is the quality of sex is rising as opposed to the quantity,” Talbot offers. “There’s a big conversation around parity on screen” (i.e. male actors disrobing just as often as their female counterparts) “so there’s a conversation to be had regarding exposure versus sex. Because you can have a lot of sex scenes where people are almost entirely clothed. And I think the reaction to those might be different to those where the characters are fully nude.”

Parity is part of the rise in quality, obviously. It’s unfair and unrealistic to expect to see a woman’s body on display during a sex scene but not a man’s. Still, the increase in prosthetic penises and full-frontal shots could be adding to the discomfort of viewers who aren’t used to desensitizing themselves to male bodies in the same way they are female bodies.

“I think many of us are seeing more intimacy than ever across TV and film: more diversity in the kinds of sex, more diversity in who has sex, and more diversity in the body parts shown on screen,” Boodram says. “This is truly a positive thing because we are straying away from the heteronormative model of how sex is depicted in media — kiss, kiss, clothes come off, penis goes in, cut to both people looking satisfied wrapped up in sheets — but because it’s new, it can seem scary or intimidating.”

It’s important then to investigate exactly what people are complaining about and ask why seeing women explore their sexuality on screen is so offensive.

“People are much more comfortable watching a murder than they sometimes are a sex scene,” Talbot laments. An on-the-nose-yet-completely-ludicrous idea considering how sexualized our culture is. The online backlash to sex scenes on screen isn’t going to change her role on set, or the content being made. “I’ve not seen the sex being axed because of a conversation on Twitter about too much sex on screen,” she assures me. “I think there’s so much invested in the creative that I don’t believe that those conversations are really impacting real-world storytelling.”

But the fact that one scene – like Bailey’s in Swarm – or one comment – like Badgley’s about You – can snowball into an avalanche of think pieces and Tik Toks and conservative talking points that pull focus from the sex-positive, femme-empowering depictions of intimacy happening on screen right now is still worrisome.

“As diverse representations of sexuality become more normalized over time, people may become more accepting and appreciative of seeing women’s pleasure on-screen in ways that don’t benefit the male ego,” Boodram says. “Discomfort shouldn’t be a barrier to pursuing diversity and gender equality when showcasing sexuality on-screen.”

And if watching women get off on screen at the same rate as men makes you uncomfortable, maybe you should ask yourself the same question we just did. Why?

A Juror Reveals Why (And How) Gwyneth Paltrow Won Her Nutso Utah Ski Trial

A juror in the delightfully entertaining Gwyneth Paltrow ski trial has opened up about why the actress won her countersuit against Terry Sanderson. The retired optometrist had sued Paltrow for $300,000 over claims that she crashed into him from behind at a Utah ski resort. Sanderson reportedly suffered serious injuries including broken ribs and a concussion, and he claimed Paltrow skied away after the incident. However, Paltrow countersued, claiming Sanderson crashed into her, and a jury bought it.

In an exclusive interview with ABC News, juror No. 11 Samantha Imrie explained why she sided with Paltrow in the verdict after changing her opinion several times during the trial:

Ultimately, Imrie said she felt the expert witnesses, like Dr. Irving Scher, who testified on Paltrow’s behalf, helped her reach a conclusion.

“He’s a snow sports expert in many different ways. I think the fact that Dr. Scher could speak to the din settings and he specifically studied snow science, that he had a stronger opinion,” Imrie said.

Imrie also made it a point to note that Paltrow’s celebrity status had nothing to do with the verdict despite Sanderson’s claim to the contrary after the trial. This was about the law, and wait, did she say “snow science” back there?

“I think it’s important that the public doesn’t just think that this was a win because Gwyneth’s a celebrity,” Imrie said. “I mean, this is based on the evidence. This is based on the law. I do work in medicine and you have to look at everyone the same. So I think that that should apply in the courtroom as well.”

Congrats to Gwyneth. Please don’t spend that dollar all in one place.

Jason Momoa Was Expecting A Lot More Behind-The-Scenes ‘Drama’ While Making ‘Fast X’

Vin Diesel likes to use the word “family” to describe his Fast and Furious co-stars. And just like real family, there’s been plenty of drama.

We don’t have time to recap it all (here’s a refresher), but Jason Momoa anticipated to see the squabbling for himself when he signed up for Fast X. Instead, he found the experience to be like an Impossible Whopper: beef free.

“I was expecting there to be a lot of – I mean, to be completely honest – drama, and you’re like, ‘I want nothing to do with this.’ But I saw nothing of the sort,” he told Total Film (via the Direct). “It was amazing. Everyone was so supportive. I had a ball with Vin. I was just shocked at how cool everyone was. No one was jaded; everyone was just really, really happy to be there.”

And Momoa was happy he got to do whatever is happening here:

UNIVERSAL

Momoa also teased his character, Dante, the “best male villain” in the franchise. “I didn’t want it to turn into another macho, testosterone-showdown kind of thing,” he said. “I wanted to make him look really inviting and easy-going, to have a softer side. That’s why he wears pastels. He’s a little androgynous. He’s been really, really hurt, so he’s a dangerous person… I wanted you to be intrigued by Dante Reyes.”

Fast X, which is not pronounced the way you think it is, opens on May 19.

The ‘Morning Joe’ Team Could Not Handle Teary-Eyed Lindsey Graham Begging Fox News Viewers To Give More Of Their Money To Trump

Lindsey Graham has been called a lot of things over his 30-year-plus long political career. “The gift that keeps on giving” is a new one. But that’s what Morning Joe host — and former Republican congressman — Joe Scarborough officially dubbed the South Carolina senator, following his televangelist-like performance on Fox News.

On Wednesday night, just hours after it was announced that a New York grand jury had decided to indict Donald Trump over his hush money payment to Stormy Daniels, Graham became an emotional wreck on live TV while speaking with Sean Hannity. And Scarborough loved every second of it.

“To the conservatives out there: Make sure you vote,” Graham — who appeared to have tears in his eyes — said directly into the camera. “If you’ve got friends, make sure they vote. If you don’t have any friends, go make some friends. But you need to help this man, Donald J. Trump. They’re trying to drain him dry. He’s spent more money on lawyers than most people spend on campaigns.”

Scarborough, meanwhile, was on the verge of spitting coffee out of his nose watching Graham’s pleas. Especially as the Morning Joe team paired the clip with a previous Graham rant from January 6, 2021, in which the senator asked the world to “count me out” on Trump, declaring that “enough is enough.”

“Lindsey is the gift that keeps on giving,” Scarborough said, through his own tears (of laughter). “He’s Oral Roberts up in his tower saying, ‘Give me $3 million or the Lord’s going to take me home.’”

“I’ve known Lindsey a long time,” Scarborough continued. “I remember somebody saying: ‘You know, I like Lindsey. But I wouldn’t let him guard the Pentagon. Because he switches sides so quickly, you never know what side he’s going to be on.’ Somebody said that back in like 1996. It’s never changed! Lindsey’s the same now as he was then. He just kind of [goes] wherever the breeze goes.”

Scarborough’s co-host Willie Geist got in his own little burn when he suggested that “I believe, I could be wrong, maybe there was something else going on. Allergies? I think he had tears in his eyes when he made that passionate, emotional plea — for money, at the end of the day.”

As of noon on Friday, Graham was still #TeamTrump — but who knows what tomorrow will bring.

Will ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Have A Sequel?

Now that the movie is almost out, it’s safe to say that Chris Pratt is actually voicing Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Yeah, it was announced back in 2021, and he has continued to appear in promotional spots and has been actively talking about the movie, and he seems to really be in it. But there was a small glimmer of hope for Italian-Americans everywhere that maybe, just maybe, the whole thing had been an elaborate ruse and that when the movie actually came out, the theater lights would dim, and it would be revealed that Danny DeVito was really Mario. As of right now, it’s still Chris Pratt.

There is one thing Pratt has done right regarding the movie, and it’s actually in reference to the potential sequel. Pratt recently explained the post-credits scene, telling CBR, “Listen, there’s like, at the end of the film, there’s a post-credit sequence that gives you a taste of what the sequel could be about. And that gets me very, very excited. But there’s been talk of Luigi’s Mansion. That was a Gamecube game. I think that would be great.” So, it appears that there will be a sequel after all. Were we really surprised?

This might also be one of the few and rare moments in Pratt’s life where he is universally correct, as Luigi’s Mansion is both a pivotal piece of Mario canon that would make a great film, but it would also bring back the little sound effect of poor Luigi shaking in his well-worn plumber shoes while shouting out in pain for his brother. Seeing as the game is pretty much a horror movie waiting to happen, this could work!

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is in theaters on April 7th.

Ozzy Osbourne’s Health Is Doing ‘Much Better,’ According To The Rocker’s Wife Sharon

Even the self-proclaimed prince of darkness has to face his mortality from time to time. Back in December, rock legend Ozzy Osbourne shared the heartbreaking news that he was dealing with major health complications that would require surgery. The musician checked back in with the public in February following his appearance in several Super Bowl commercials to say that he would be canceling his European tour dates to give himself more time to recover from the surgery.

Now that it has been revealed that Osbourne will head the inaugural rock-focused music festival Power Trip this October, fans didn’t want to get too excited in case he had to pull out. However, according to the musician’s wife, Sharon, “he’s good.” Blabbermouth is reporting that while the TV host made an appearance on TalkTV’s Piers Morgan Uncensored she spoke at great lengths about his health.

“He’s doing so much better,” Sharon said, adding, “I think I told you about it the other night, but now it’s been announced; we can talk about it. He’s doing a show [on] October 6th in America,” referring to Power Trip Festival.

“It’s at the Coachella site. It’s gonna be a great show,” said Sharon.

Morgan jumped in to add “the rocker is still rocking.” To that, Sharon replied, “He never stopped. He’s back.”

Grateful Dead’s Latest Cosmic Camping Merch Is Inspired By The Band’s Early Beginnings

The Greatful Dead are more than just a band, they’re an entire community. And their latest merch collection, Cosmic Camping, is an example of what happens when you bring the community together.

The full collection consists of everything a deadhead would need to hit the road and follow the band on tour; a forest green duffle bag, warm vests, psychedelic t-shirts, water bottles, a hammock, and even a fire starter and mushroom foraging tool.

To create the Cosmic Camping collection, Grateful Dead tapped a team of talented designers who also happen to be massive fans. Airbrush artist and designer Andrew Martinez told Uproxx that he grew up listening to their music. “My father is a huge fan of the Grateful Dead and he raised me around the music, and I’ve just been listening to Grateful Dead since I was a baby.” For his t-shirt design, the LA-based artist merged his classic style while pulling influences from actual Grateful Dead band tees his dad still has in his closet. “I kind of had to just dust off and I hung them up to see what I could pull (from each one) to create this artwork,” he added.

Similarly to Martinez, designer Daniel Herwitt was first exposed to the Grateful Dead’s music through his father. “My father is a dead head and he’s responsible for a lot of music I listen to today; a lot of Grateful Dead, a lot of jam bands, a lot of world music,” he said. “He was my first involvement and interested into the Dead. But the culture of it was all still a mystery to me.” That part would come later, especially when he was pulling inspiration for his duffle bag and hoodie designs. “A unique part of the Grateful Dead is that lore of visual history, which is why I love it so much,” Herwitt added.

Fellow designer Sean Heydroff also described to Uproxx how his love for the Grateful Dead influenced his designs for the collection. Heydroff first began listening to the band as a teenager, even getting the chance to see them play live and meet fellow community members when he was fresh out of high school. He mentions looking through posters and t-shirts from that time period while making sure to find “inspiration in the weirdest moments.” He added: “I like to listen to, as silly as it sounds, what the universe wants me to make.”

NBA Mock Draft 2023: Surveying The Landscape Before The Final Four

The 2023 Final Four begins in earnest on Saturday in Houston, and the 2023 NCAA Tournament already made some history. By the Elite Eight, every No. 1 seed was gone, and the highest-seeded team remaining in the field is No. 4 seed UConn. While the Huskies clearly have the pedigree and advanced metrics of a team that would be a very “normal” national champion if that comes to fruition, the bracket essentially turned upside down and, along with it, the best of the best in terms of NBA draft prospects are largely absent when the basketball world turns its eyes to Houston.

Without spoiling the mock draft below, only one player in the top 30 will participate in the Final Four, and many of the top prospects in this class either operated entirely outside of the collegiate structure or missed the 2023 NCAA Tournament. Alas, there is still plenty of game tape to monitor and some of the prospects listed in this space jumped or fell based on March performances.

The very top of the board hasn’t changed, and probably won’t, but the 2023 NBA Draft is intriguing in many ways, and here is a pre-Final Four check-in on where things stand.

(Note: Draft order as of March 28)

1. Detroit Pistons – Victor Wembanyama (C/F, Metropolitans 92)

victor wembanyama
Getty Image

While at least some of these picks are informed by which team is choosing, Wembanyama is not. He is going to be getting his named called No. 1, regardless of team. In this instance, Detroit wins the top prize of the 2023 draft and gets to add a generational talent to the mix.

2. Houston Rockets – Scoot Henderson (G, G League Ignite)

It would take a very particular situation for a team to pass on Henderson at No. 2, at least from my personal viewpoint. Houston doesn’t qualify under that premise, and if anything, it’s probably time for the Rockets to invest in a true lead guard. There are some questions about Henderson’s shooting and overall efficiency, but he’s a clear No. 2 here.

3. San Antonio Spurs – Brandon Miller (F, Alabama)

Miller had a truly awful NCAA Tournament performance but, at least for now, neither that ugly ending nor his off-court questions are scaring teams away. His size and shooting project to translate, and Miller’s passing vision and overall tools are intriguing.

4. Charlotte Hornets – Amen Thompson (G, Overtime Elite)

This isn’t the most team-specific pick in the world but, hey, it’s early. Amen Thompson isn’t the cleanest fit with LaMelo Ball, but he’s a tremendous athlete and has incredibly appealing raw tools. The lack of shooting and offensive role when opponents can slow things down is scary, but the upside is tantalizing.

5. Portland Trail Blazers – Ausar Thompson (G/F, Overtime Elite)

His brother is largely seen as the superior prospect, based in part on Amen’s insane athleticism and twitchiness. Ausar is also a very good athlete, though, and he currently has more offensive appeal, craft, and shooting projection. Portland could go just about anywhere here, but Ausar shouldn’t be slipping out of the top ten.

6. Orlando Magic – Cam Whitmore (F, Villanova)

cam whitmore

Orlando probably doesn’t need another 6’7 forward with shot creation upside as much as they need other things. With that said, Whitmore consistently seems to be in the top half of the lottery and his athleticism and size are intriguing.

7. Indiana Pacers – Jarace Walker (F, Houston)

Walker probably won’t be an offensive star in the NBA, and his role is a bit unclear on that end. There is a lot to like, mind you, but the real investment comes on defense with his 7’2 wingspan and impressive feel and reactivity.

8. Washington Wizards – Cason Wallace (G, Kentucky)

This isn’t my favorite-ever fit or anything, but Wallace should be a lottery pick in my view. His defense is incredibly appealing, and Wallace might get the annual Kentucky bump after the way he was strangely utilized in Lexington. Washington may not be the team, but someone should be taking him in this relative range.

9. Utah Jazz – Anthony Black (G/F, Arkansas)

It’s easy to fall in love with Anthony Black and how he views the game. He has great feel and great size. He knows where to be and how to get there. The questions are whether he’s athletic enough to translate it all and whether his shot will go in. There seems to be a lottery floor, even if he can be polarizing.

10. Orlando Magic (via Chicago) – Gradey Dick (G/F, Kansas)

Like most teams, Orlando could use a shooter and Dick might be the best bet in the class. He is extremely dynamic as a floor spacer, and Dick is also capable of creating his own offense. Defensively, it might be a bit dicey, but he did improve during the season and has real length on the wing.

11. New York Knicks (via Dallas) – Nick Smith Jr. (G, Arkansas)

nick smith jr

It’s hard to find the best spot for Smith. He was one of the top-ranked recruits in the country out of high school and seemingly on the way to a top-10 landing spot. Now, he could go outside the lottery and it wouldn’t be surprising after a bunch of injury absences and on-court struggles. His scoring appeal remains, but it’s messier now.

12. New Orleans Pelicans (via Los Angeles Lakers) – Jordan Hawkins (G/F, UConn)

Hawkins is very easily the best prospect remaining in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. This would’ve probably felt high for him a few weeks ago, but Hawkins has played extremely well and has an easily translatable skill set. His shooting is the primary appeal, but he knows how to move off the ball and could be solid on defense at the NBA level.

13. Oklahoma City Thunder – Taylor Hendricks (F, UCF)

Because he played at UCF, Hendricks isn’t exactly famous just yet, but he is widely considered to be a top-15 guy in the class. Evaluators that view Hendricks as a potential pick in the top half of the lottery really believe in his development ability as a scorer. Others are more tied to his clear projection as a havoc-creating defender who is 6’9 with the ability to shoot. Regardless, there is a lot to like.

14. Toronto Raptors – Keyonte George (G, Baylor)

George definitely has appeal in some scouting circles as a potential top-10 pick, but others point to his very middling efficiency as cause for concern. Baylor was an interesting system to evaluate him next to a handful of veterans but, going back to his high school tape, George’s appeal as an on-ball guy is pretty clear.

15. Atlanta Hawks – Kris Murray (F, Iowa)

Murray could slot in for about 10 teams in this draft, maybe more. He’s a 6’8 forward who can really shoot it and won’t take much off the table. Murray also doesn’t need the ball to succeed at the next level, making him a snug potential fit with the Hawks.

16. Los Angeles Lakers (via New Orleans) – Jalen Hood-Schifino (G, Indiana)

jalen hood-schifino
Getty Image

He’s not a nuclear athlete, but Hood-Schifino is 6’6 with the ability to shoot, pass, and affect the game in myriad ways. He didn’t play well in the NCAA Tournament, but that shouldn’t scare anyone away. He’s a potential lottery pick.

17. Golden State Warriors – Rayan Rupert (G/F, New Zealand Breakers)

Like many players in this range, there is a split on Rupert’s appeal as a first-rounder. His defense and feel are undeniably strong, though, and the Warriors seem like a team that could maximize his offensive talents in the right situation.

18. Utah Jazz (via Minnesota) – Maxwell Lewis (G/F, Pepperdine)

Lewis isn’t a mainstream name for non-draft consumers, but he’s 6’7 with shot creation and athleticism. He also played on a pretty bad Pepperdine team and struggled late in the year, but Utah can take some swings and somebody is going to fall in love with what Lewis could become.

19. Houston Rockets (via LA Clippers) – Leonard Miller (F, G League Ignite)

It is hard to find a consensus with Miller, but he had a great close to the season in the G League. There have always been fans of his work as a 6’10 forward with intriguing physical tools, but his production improved and he’s still young.

20. Brooklyn Nets – Kobe Bufkin (G, Michigan)

Some believe Bufkin could still consider going back to Michigan to be “the guy” next season, but he also seems to be a pretty safe first round pick at this juncture. Bufkin was highly efficient this season in Ann Arbor, improving as the season went along, and he is a good passer and finisher with NBA-level athleticism. Whether he goes ahead of teammate Jett Howard is up for debate, but Bufkin seems to still be rising on boards.

21. Miami Heat – Dariq Whitehead (G/F, Duke)

dariq whitehead
Getty Image

It’s always a bit tough to figure out what Miami might do, but Whitehead falling here opens a clear door. He is a former top-ten high school recruit with real offensive flashes during his freshman season at Duke. Injuries and defensive struggles might push him down, but Whitehead also might kill it on the pre-draft circuit if he’s healthy.

22. Brooklyn Nets (via Phoenix) – Brice Sensabaugh (G/F, Ohio State)

Sensabaugh’s season ended prematurely with a knee injury but, provided that isn’t a concern, he should be a top-25 pick. His shot-making chops are very impressive at this early stage, and it wouldn’t be hard to fall in love with that for a wing player from a blue blood program.

23. Portland Trail Blazers (via New York) – Dereck Lively (C, Duke)

Candidly, I don’t think Lively is going to fall this far by the time the process is over. His tools on the defensive end are just too appealing as a seven-footer with great movement skills and, even with offensive questions, he has starting center potential with upside beyond that.

24. Sacramento Kings – Colby Jones (G/F, Xavier)

A lot of teams should consider Jones in the back half of the first round. He is the archetype of a wing-sized player who does a lot of things well and doesn’t struggle with much of anything. That kind of player falls too far sometimes and, well, Jones isn’t terribly sexy. But he projects as a long-time rotation wing.

25. Indiana Pacers (via Cleveland) – Jett Howard (G/F, Michigan)

Howard was looking like a potential lottery pick before cooling off late in the season. He is very interesting as a 6’8 shot creator, but the lack of supporting characteristics brings questions.

26. Memphis Grizzlies – Terquavion Smith (G, NC State)

terquavion smith
Getty Image

Smith might’ve gone higher in last year’s draft, but he didn’t do anything to really fall in 2023 either. The questions are obvious when it comes to his very slender frame and efficiency challenges, but Smith can really score and projects to be interesting as a potential sixth man who can create his own shot.

27. Utah Jazz (via Philadelphia) – G.G. Jackson (F, South Carolina)

With three picks, Utah takes a swing here. Jackson doesn’t even turn 19 until December and he had a very weird season after reclassifying. He’s going to take a while, but the Jazz can bring him along slowly and in a strong system.

28. Charlotte Hornets (via Denver) – Jaime Jaquez Jr. (G, UCLA)

Jaquez is not a high-ceiling player in the slightest and it should surprise no one if he slips into the 30’s or even the 40’s. With that said, he’s appealing as a tough, two-way player with size and sky-high basketball IQ that would fit a lot of places.

29. Indiana Pacers (via Boston) – Kyle Filipowski (C/F, Duke)

Filipowski has a lot of fans around the league and, if a team buys into his shooting, he could go considerably higher than this. He’s a seven-footer with incredibly high feel and impressive skills, though Filipowski’s defense is a big-time question mark at the next level.

30. LA Clippers (via Milwaukee) – Sidy Cissoko (G/F, G League Ignite)

He’s something of a developmental selection at this point, but Cissoko checks a lot of interesting boxes. He just turns 19 later this week and Cissoko has size and defensive tools to go along with appeal from his basketball feel.

‘Modern Family’ Star Julie Bowen Is Shooting Her Shot With Harry Styles: ‘I’m Old, But I Know What I’m Doing’

As far as anyone knows, Harry Styles is single. The “As It Was” singer was seen smooching Emily Ratajkowski in Tokyo, but they’re not “together” together. (I’m still pulling for her and Eric Andre.) Harry is a busy guy and all, but if he’s ready to settle down, Julie Bowen is waiting.

The Modern Family actress appeared on The Jennifer Hudson Show this week to discuss her affinity for Styles and the sign she made for him when she saw him live with her kids. What did the sign read? “Harry, I’m old, but I know what I’m doing.” Bowen explained, “I think, like, he could do worse than me! I mean I’m not the youngest, but I think I could show him a good time.”

“Everybody should have a crush on Harry Styles,” she said. “Come on.” Bowen went on to say she checks her direct messages “nightly” to see if he has “slid into” her DMs yet. “Harry, if you’d like to slide into my DMs, just do it. It’s right there,” she said. But she later admitted, “No, I don’t think he knows I exist.”

I’m positive Styles has seen at least one episode of Modern Family, and therefore knows who Bowen is, because everyone has seen at least one episode of Modern Family. It’s a classic “background” TV show. But — and this is very important — has he seen Happy Gilmore? I’m leaning towards no.

Styles was two years old when the golf comedy came out, and considering he’s been famous since he was a teenager, he hasn’t had a lot to downtime to watch old Adam Sandler movies. (It hurts to call Happy Gilmore “old,” because it means I’m old, but I have to be honest with my old-ass self.)

If Styles want an education on Sandler’s filmography, forget Julie Bowen. Slide into my DMs (where we can discuss You Don’t Mess with the Zohan).
