‘The Golden Bachelor’ Recap: Somebody’s Gonna Get Hurt

It’s been a while since ABC’s Bachelor franchise sparked enough of our interest to actually tune in so we just have to ask: Is there always this much crying?

The second episode of The Golden Bachelor is a bit of a blubbering mess as the first one-on-one and group dates stir up painful emotions for the women before the final rose ceremony tasks Gary with doing the one thing he hates most: making a decision. Unlike past installments of the reality dating series, this show is constantly wading into uncharted trauma-tory, digging up past hurts, tasking its cast with sharing deeply personal heartbreak to fuel its driving premise of second chances and life after love. It’s at its most shallow, superficial fun when we’re laughing with the women about hearing aids and knee replacements but, this episode especially, focuses on the depressing reality of why we’re all here: loss. It’s inescapable, inevitable, and sometimes so hard to contend with that we’ll do anything — even don a tacky costume wedding dress for a poorly lit photoshoot that will then be framed and gifted to us on camera where we’ll grin and bear the embarrassment as we label it “The best present we’ve ever received.”

The pursuit of love really is exhausting.

Luckily, these oldies have more energy than the rest of us watching at home so we push onward. Here are the winners and losers of this week’s The Golden Bachelor.

Loser – Gary’s Freeway Fail

Gary is a 71-year-old man from Indiana whose mind cannot possibly fathom how to navigate LA traffic so, naturally, the producers gift him a classic Thunderbird with faulty headlights and send him on his way just as the sun’s going down. The result: a five-minute car ride that might be the most tense span of television we’ve seen in a while. If Quentin Tarantino had directed that scene in Clueless when Cher accidentally took the freeway, it’d probably look something like this.

Winner – Theresa’s Diner Flash Mob

Despite Gary’s failed Fast and Furious audition, Theresa seems to be having a great time, calming him down with gentle shoulder touches and opening up about her own devastating loss. Sure, sharing that your husband died of kidney failure in your arms is a truly insane conversation to have over milkshakes and fries at a kitschy California diner but when it ends with a scripted flash mob dance break, isn’t it worth it?

Loser – Leslie’s Flower Child Meltdown

The performance of this 64-year-old aerobics champion in this week’s episode was disappointing, to say the least. Leslie spent most of her time fuming over missing her chance to don 70s garb for a fake photoshoot instead of realizing that leather is the sexiest thing you can wear and working her goods for a one-on-one. This is not the kind of behavior becoming of a woman who once dated Prince. Play smarter, not harder, Leslie.

Winner – Nancy’s Storybook Ending

Most of the women had a good time during the romance novel cover shoot but for Nancy, the unfortunate choice to play dress up in a wedding gown quickly turned into a form of exposure therapy. That polyester and machine-stitched lace emotionally gutted the poor woman but luckily, she was able to weaponize those tears into receiving a rose before the night’s ceremony.

Loser – The Top Bunk Crew

Ok, no we know the producers are having a laugh because how are you going to make senior citizens sleep like they’re in summer camp? Someone’s going to break a hip. It won’t be Sandra, whose two knee replacements are too precious to risk climbing up a rickety ladder meant for a child. And it certainly won’t be pickleball co-captain Ellen, who risks wetting the bed every night if she’s not close to a bathroom. But Edith? Joan? Who will be the first to fall?

Winner – Susan’s 7 a.m. Chicken Piccata

Italian women treat that whole “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” cliché like it’s Gospel and Gary better be ready to worship at the altar of Susan’s 7 a.m. chicken piccata and garlic-fried meatballs.

Winner – April’s Grilling Technique

On the other hand, April’s motto when it comes to cooking also has its merits. She’s not here to fill Gary’s stomach after all, she’s here to decorate his life with love and joy.

Undecided – Nancy’s Killer Drive

We’re not sure how to feel about Kathy yet and it seems Gary doesn’t know either. She’s the last to get a rose this week despite appearing to be the most competitive of the bunch. At one point in the episode, as the women fret over a bug in the bathroom, Kathy issues her war cry: “I will kill!” The cockroach, or the women standing between you and a one-on-one date, Kathy?

Did Drake Diss The Weeknd On ‘For All The Dogs?’

Drake has finally shared his new album For All The Dogs. The album has plenty of features from artists like SZA, 21 Savage, Bad Bunny, Lil Yachty, Sexyy Red, and more, but there’s also some beef — not between J. Cole and NBA YoungBoy, it would seem, but there are rumors of a diss from Drake about another famous musician.

Fans are pointing out a lyric in the track “All The Parties” that goes, “My b*tches playin’ PND and them / The shorties only listen to Weeknd.” However, the lyric shown on Genius keeps changing, so it’s not confirmed that those are the real words. Also, listeners are debating over whether it’s even a diss or not; some are claiming that Drake and Abel Tesfaye are friends, and that there’s no need to read into the line and create unnecessary drama.

The most recent discussion about both Drake and The Weeknd was when an AI-generated collaboration between them called “Heart On My Sleeve” circulated in April. Universal Music Group issued a takedown notice once it went viral. In September, the Academy CEO, Harvey Mason, Jr stated that the song was “absolutely eligible” for a Grammy Award “because it was written by a human,” later offering clarification.

Rachel Bilson Responded After Whoopi Goldberg Criticized Her For Finding Men With A ‘Low’ Number Of Sexual Partners ‘Weird’

It’s the 2023 feud no one saw coming: Rachel Bilson vs. Whoopi Goldberg.

On a recent episode of the Broad Ideas podcast, The O.C. star shared her preference for men who have slept with lots of women. “This is gonna sound so judgemental, but if a dude is in his 40s and he [has] only slept with four women… but it all depends,” Bilson said, adding that if his number of sexual partners was “really low” as he approaches 50, it would be a “little weird.”

Whoopi Goldberg disagrees. “I’m sorry, I think it’s very odd that you’re concerned that he’s had sexual partners — any sexual partners. Why is it your business?” she said on Thursday’s episode of The View. Goldberg added, “If he’s happy with you and you’re having a good time, why are you b*tching?”

Bilson has since responded to Goldberg’s comments, telling Entertainment Weekly that she’s “been a fan of Whoopi’s for a very long time, so when I saw the tagline that she criticized something I said, I of course was concerned.”

The podcaster continued:

“We make it a very safe open place to discuss anything, and we were just talking. I have the power to edit our podcast, and I chose to keep the conversation as a whole in, because a lot of the time in life, you say something, and maybe you have a minute and you reflect on it. The point I get across is that it doesn’t matter, and maybe in the past I would’ve looked at it [judgmentally], but I wouldn’t do that anymore. I made it clear that I don’t want to sound judgmental, it was important that that point get across, not what I said initially.”

Hopefully they can see eye to eye on one important issue: Oliver sucks.

Bilson called it a “flippant comment that I was just talking with friends, and then I retracted it, because even talking about it now, I’m like, I don’t actually believe that. That’s why I think it’s important to stand up for it and clarify.” If you listen to the entire conversation, she believes “it actually isn’t what was first presented. I think it’s important to hear a whole conversation before casting your own judgment or criticism on something.” You can do so below.

Indiecast On The New Sufjan Stevens Album and U2 At The Sphere

Loyal listeners are aware that Steven is currently wiping the floor with Ian in their Fantasy Fall Albums draft. But Ian has a shot this week to make up some ground with the release of Javelin, the new critically acclaimed album by Sufjan Stevens. While Steven respects Sufjan’s talent and stature in the indie world, he’s never quite warmed up to the singer-songwriter, due to his undeniable “theater kid/youth pastor” vibes. Ian meanwhile is a big fan and considered Javelin a return to form. Hear the guys hash it out over one of indie’s most beloved legacy acts.

From there the conversation shifts to Steven’s recent trip to Las Vegas to see U2 play at the new state-of-the-art venue Sphere. We have all seen video clips of this thing by now, but what was it like to be there in person? And what other acts can possibly play this thing? Changing gears dramatically, the guys get down to talking about the amazing popularity of Duster, the ’90s-era slowcore band that was mostly ignored in their time and now ranks as one of the most streamed bands of the era. What’s it like to see your own musical past re-written by future generations?

In Recommendation Corner, Ian talk about the emo revival band Bewilder while Steven recommends the emerging Minneapolis alt-rock outfit Prize Horse.

Jimmy Kimmel Knows Of A Rootin’ Tootin’ Lawmaker Who Could Do One Thing Better Than Anyone Else As House Speaker

Rootin’ tootin’ Lauren Boebert once expressed her confidence in being named House Speaker. Jimmy Kimmel is kind-of on board? Well, he at least knows of one thing that she could do better than anyone else, including those who are officially vying for the position in 2023. And man, the late night talk show hosts really are going for it during this first week back.

This week also coincides with the historical ousting of Kevin McCarthy and, in general, a ton of catch-up jokes about Boebert’s Beetlejuice groping incident. One of these efforts turned out to be far more athletic than the rest, but Kimmel thinks that Boebert could put her apparent groping abilities to the test in another way.

Aafter the 5:45 mark above, Kimmel discusses how Jim Jordan and Steve Scalise are far-right frontrunners to lead. Kimmel added, “I don’t like either one of those guys,” but he does know someone who could bring people together. Not politically, of course. Boebert is a born divider in that way, but literally, Boebert could, well, you know: “I mean, we saw at that Beetlejuice musical — she does know how to reach across the aisle.”

(To be clear, Kimmel obviously isn’t in favor of this, but he does have a point. If the House GOP is gonna pick a cartoonish leader, Boebert fits the bill, too.)

It truly is amazing how much mileage that one Bar Guy incident can provide. That groping went down nearly a month ago, and the late night shows brought it back right as the furor was beginning to die down. John Oliver was so happy to tackle the topic, and his audience was happy for him.

Drake Let His Son Adonis Rap On ‘Daylight’ From ‘For All The Dogs’ And Fans Can’t Get Enough Of It

Drake’s new album For All The Dogs is full of surprises. The first one fans noticed was when the album didn’t drop at midnight, but instead arrived at 6 a.m. ET today (October 6). In terms of the project itself, fans were delighted to see Drake’s 5-year-old son Adonis Graham get his own verse at the end of the song “Daylight.”

The boy raps, “Don’t talk to my man like that / I like it when you like it / My, my, my, my man / My, my, my, my man / Don’t talk to my man like that / I like it when you like it / My, my, my, my man / My, my, my, my man / You know which one you want / I don’t care which one you want / You can take whatever / I don’t care what you do / I will always, watchin’ for you.”

Listeners immediately loved Adonis’ appearance. The kid became a trending topic on X (formerly Twitter) after the album’s release.

Popular streamer Kai Cenat was also pumped to hear Adonis as he listened to the album live:

Adonis, of course, has been heavily involved in the album, whether he’s illustrating the cover art or co-starring in the “8AM In Charlotte” video.

Stephen Colbert Compared A Trump Family Member’s Tom Petty Cover To ‘Domestic Terrorism’

It was six years ago this month that Tom Petty died. One of the greatest American songwriters of all-time, gone too soon at 66 years old. But at least he never had to hear Lara Trump‘s cover of “I Won’t Back Down.”

Released as the first single from 1989’s Full Moon Fever, “I Won’t Back Down” is Petty’s ode to perseverance, to keeping this world from draggin’ you down and standing your ground. It has frequently been co-opted by conservatives, including Donald Trump, who played at his rallies in 2020. “Trump was in no way authorized to use this song to further a campaign that leaves too many Americans and common sense behind,” Petty’s family wrote on then-Twitter. “Both the late Tom Petty and his family firmly stand against racism and discrimination of any kind. Tom Petty would never want a song of his used for a campaign of hate. He liked to bring people together.”

Trump eventually stopped playing the song, but Lara Trump, Eric’s wife and Donald’s daughter-in-law, decided to cover it. On Thursday’s episode of The Late Show, host Stephen Colbert offered his review of her deceptively off-key performance on Sky News Australia. “Well I’ve never been to the gates of hell but now I’m pretty sure I know what they sound like,” he joked.

Lara Trump has claimed that her song has been “shadowbanned” on streaming services for being too political, to which Colbert quipped, “Yes, too political, her singing has been legally designated as domestic terrorism.”

J. Cole Used Drake’s ‘For All The Dogs’ To Address His Alleged Beef With NBA YoungBoy

There have been rumors lately that J. Cole and YoungBoy Never Broke Again are beefing. Cole, though, made a guest appearance on Drake’s new album For All The Dogs, in which he seemingly puts the rumors to rest.

On “First Person Shooter,” Cole raps, “I still wanna get me a song with YB / Can’t trust everything that you saw on IG / Just know if I diss you, I made sure you know that I hit you like I’m on your caller ID.”

As for what’s going on here: In 2021, it was reported that NBA Youngboy had a studio session with Cole scheduled, but he apparently made Cole wait for 8 hours and never actually showed up. YoungBoy claimed at the time, “They lied and said I stood J. Cole up. They lied, they said I ain’t wanna go in the studio with him. That wasn’t even the case. I was going through something so what the f*ck I’ma go in this man’s studio session for a meet up with him, knowing that I ain’t in a mode to talk or just to be in the mode to f*ck around. What the f*ck I’ma go around this man if I know I ain’t in a mood to talk to nobody or sit there, or even be around somebody.”

Fast-forward to earlier this year, when YoungBoy rapped on “F*ck The Industry Pt. 2,” “J. a ho, that n**** played it cold like he was gon’ do a feature / So I texted his line a muscle sign, I swear it’s gon’ be nice to meet you.”

Last month, Cole featured on Lil Yachty’s “The Secret Recipe” and rapped, “N****s makin’ threats and I laugh, that’s ’cause you ain’t a threat / Don’t ask how I feel ’bout no rappers, sh*t, they OK, I guess / Incomin’ call, press the button, the one that say accept / He FaceTime to ask for a feature and saw the face of death / I’m on your song, your streams goin’ up, not quite the Drake effect / But don’t complain, b*tch, take what you get and cut the label check.”

While that was widely interpreted as being about YoungBoy, Cole’s manager Ibrahim Hamad wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “I’m pretty sure this is [cap]. Not sure how y’all heard that cole verse and put that together, impressive.”

Drake’s ‘For All The Dogs’: Here Are All The Features And Producers On The Album

The journey toward Drake’s For All The Dogs lasted a bit longer than expected. After announcing it over the summer during his It’s All A Blur Tour with 21 Savage, rumor had it that the project would initially arrive on August 25. However, that day came and went without its release and Lil Yachty blamed fans for believing a date that was not announced by Drake himself. Janelle Monáe, Latto, And Quavo Are On Their ‘Champagne Sh*t’ On The Song’s New ATL Remix

Janelle Monáe‘s world takeover continues. Tonight (October 6), the illustrious musician has shared a remix to a fan favorite from her fourth studio album, The Age Of Pleasure.

On a special ATL remix to “Champagne Sh*t,” Monáe joins forces with fellow Atlanta rap stars, Latto and Quavo. Throughout the course of the song, the three are in triumphant spirits, as they toast to their wins.

Monáe’s first verse and chorus remain the same as those on the original album version, with Quavo and Latto adding even more southern flair.

“We gon’ drink ’til we faint now it’s tasting like water / Proud of the times when we came from the bottom / Right now I’m hot, it’s time to go harder / How we keep winnin’, because I’m a starter,” raps Quavo on his triumphant verse.

Having been killing the rap game and maintaining a consistent flow of features and hits, Latto enjoys the fruits of her labor.

“College girl I’m tryna pay your tuition / Red bone kissing, casamigos pissin / Trying go home to the D like a piston,” she raps, reminding us that she’s got the game on lock.

You can listen to “Champagne Sh*t (ATL Remix)” above.

Janelle Monáe is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
