Teachers are opening up about mental health struggles, asking students to use them as a resource

Mental health affects everyone, even people that are in professions who’s sole job is to help others. Yup, that means, nurses, doctors, teachers and even therapists can have mental health challenges that they have to manage every day. One group of teachers are working to normalize mental health struggles by offering advice for students.

The teachers from different parts of America teamed up with PBS NewsHour to help teens understand that they’re safe people to talk to about their mental health.

“I want to tell all students struggling with mental health that we are here for you and that all teachers were teenagers once. We all did grow up and we have experience of what it’s like to be in middle school, to be in high school and that we can see the struggles that you’re going through,” Holly Goldberg, a teacher in Fort Lauderdale, Florida shares. “Growing up is not easy and we want you to know that we’re here to listen to you and here to help you.”

It can be easy for teens to forget that adults weren’t born as adults and that while the technology has changed, a lot of the teenage experience is still the same. Having the reminder that trusted people may understand what they’re going through can be helpful. Another teacher in the PBS video admits that he’s open with his students about his own mental health struggles and find that helps build trust to foster communication.

“Depending on what you’re comfortable with, open up a bit with them, be a little vulnerable. My students, we always talk about it. I struggle with panic disorder and so I’m struggling with some of the same things they struggle with. So letting them know, hey you’re not alone,” Robert Casas, a teacher in San Diego, California reveals.

Teens are experiencing mental health challenges at higher rates than previous years. Teachers being open with them about their own experiences or just being available for these conversations can help teens have a safe outlet.

Jimmy Fallon asked people to share ‘funny, weird, or embarrassing’ stories about their dads

There are many traditional staples of fatherhood—love, support, protection, security, providing an example—but there is, of course, that other not-so-warm-and-fuzzy feeling that dads can provoke in their kids at any given moment … sheer, utter embarrassment.

Usually in a father’s humiliation tool belt is the infamous dad joke. These corny puns have been around since 2003, and let’s face it, they’ll never leave. Of course, no dad needs one to make your eyes roll. They can do that most of the time simply by being themselves.

For his well-known #Hashtags segment, Jimmy Fallon asked his “Tonight Show” audience to share “funny, weird, or embarrassing” stories about their dads. Fallon, a father himself, is no stranger to the cringeworthy power of a dad joke. In a 2020 interview with TODAY, Fallon admitted, “I’m starting to get the eye rolls now where Daddy’s not the funniest person in the world.”

Don’t worry Fallon! Clearly you’re not alone, because people replied with some truly hilarious comments. Dads might be silly, but we’ll gladly put up with it for the love they give us.

Enjoy 20 of the very best #DadStories. As usual, Fallon went first:

Trump Is Not Going To Remotely Like The Trial Start Date Eyed By Fulton County, Georgia DA Fani Willis

Donald Trump may have wanted a fourth indictment to lock down the GOP nomination, but now that he has one, he may have wisher’s remorse. After all, if Fulton County, Georgia DA Fani Willis gets her wish, the trial into whether he and 18 other defendants committed election interference could start at the most inopportune time possible for the big guy’s third campaign.

As per The Daily Beast, Willis — who has already had to endure the reckless nonsense of the case’s primary target — is reportedly seeking a relatively early date for her trial. The district attorney is said to be eyeing March 4 of next year. Perhaps that date doesn’t sound so special. But to Trump it sure is: March 5 is the day before Super Tuesday, aka the day when the greatest number of states all hold their primary elections.

Will Trump find himself dealing with the start of a momentous trial when he should be doing some Hail Mary boostering for his campaign? Probably not. Ty Cobb, a former White House lawyer who happens to share a name with a feisty historical baseballer, told CNN this week that there’s “no chance” a trial with this many moving parts gets underway for a good long while.

“Everybody will have motions galore,” Cobb explained. “This case will take a long time for people to prepare. There will be motions for severance, motions to dismiss, and if it takes her two years, I mean heaven forbid that Trump wins the presidency, then there will be a fight to the Supreme Court over whether she can proceed against the sitting president during his term.”

In fact, whether a sitting president can be prosecuted is “an issue that’s never been resolved.”

Another possibility is that Trump will make like Mark Meadows and try to get the trial moved to federal court. By doing so, The Daily Beast explains, he “could buy more time, get a more favorable jury pool, and even land a judge whom he appointed.” What’s more federal convictions, unlike local ones, can be pardoned by U.S. presidents.

That doesn’t mean Trump can’t still face the music before the 2024 election. Indeed, the big guy has a jam-packed legal schedule, with four criminal trials possibly crammed into five busy months.

In the meantime, he has to prepare for his fourth arraignment in only a handful of months.

Bakar Melds The Past, Present, And Future In ‘Right Here, For Now,’ A Single From His Upcoming ‘Halo’ Album

In April, Uproxx identified Bakar among “The Small-Font 2023 Coachella Artists You Can’t Miss.” The British artist released “Right Here, For Now” alongside a captivating live video on Wednesday, August 16, and it’s yet another example of his growing magnetism.

The video finds Bakar with his band in an abandoned warehouse. He’s casually sprawled on the ground until it’s go time. From the first kick snare and taste of Bakar’s unique tone, it’s impossible to sit still. Bakar seamlessly melds the past (“We tried everything, ain’t got much more”), present (“I’m your muse at heart / Peddle me like I’m your drug”), and future (“I can’t wait ’til you’re right here”), all while dissecting a relationship.

Bakar is fresh off performing at Lollapalooza 2023 in Chicago on August 6. “Right Here, For Now” comes nearly two months after “Alive!” Per a press release, both singles are on the tracklist for his upcoming sophomore album, Halo.

‘Barbie’ Has Made So Much Money At The Box Office That It’s Broken A Record Long Held By A Batman Movie

The summer movie season has seen its share of flops and underperformers, but not all has been gloomy. Indeed, at the rate of money it’s Hoovering up, the season will belong to a movie that triggered he hell out of far right pundit Ben Shapiro. Barbie’s run isn’t even a month old and it’s still made a fortune, so much so that it’s already breaking a record once held by Batman.

As per Variety, as of Wednesday, Greta Gerwig’s follow-up to her prized adaptation of Little Women had made $537.5 million domestically. That makes it the biggest money-maker in the history of Warner Bros. (not adjusted for inflation). What film did it usurp? No less than The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan’s beloved second Caped Crusader picture, which once held the honor with $536 million, made back in 2008.

And yes, that means Gerwig has surpassed her fellow “Barbenheimer” filmmaker Chris Nolan.

For the record, if one does adjust for inflation, it’s a very different story. The Dark Knight‘s $536 million from 2008 translates to a staggering $761 million today. So Barbie still has a ways to go if you compute it like that.

Mind you, Barbie isn’t yet the highest grossing film of summer 2023. That title still goes to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, whose domestic earnings stand at $574.2 million and global at $1.3 billion. Barbie’s international take is currently $1.19 billion, but given that it’s still gobbling up cash, it’s likely that it will soar past that total imminently.

Nick Jonas Kept His Cool After Stumbling Into A Hole On Stage During The Jonas Brothers’ ‘The Tour’ In Boston

In June, The Jonas Brothers served as Uproxx cover stars. Joe, Kevin, and Nick reflected on their formative years and looked forward to The Tour, which kicked off with back-to-back sold-out nights at Yankee Stadium last weekend.

“We learned to laugh at some of the moments when we were taking ourselves too seriously or at comedians making fun of us. Now, we love it,” Joe Jonas said, around the release of The Album.

The Jonas Brothers have likely already giggled at Nick stumbling backward into a gaping hole in the stage during their The Tour stop at TD Garden in Boston on Tuesday, August 15. Nick was busy singing “Sail Away” while a small section of the stage was opening up behind him. When he started walking backward to rejoin Joe and Kevin in the middle of the stage, he fell into the hole but immediately popped up without missing a beat.

@kaylaskeytothekingdom

Nick Jonas had a fall but still didnt miss a beat and continued on to an amazing performance! Hope you’re ok Nick!! • • • #jonasbrother#nickjonas#joejonas#kevinjonas#jonasbrothers#jonasbrotherstour#fivealbumsonenight#nickfalls#falling#tdgarden#boston#bostonma#massachusetts

The show doubled as a birthday party for Joe, who turned 34 on Tuesday.

“Can’t thank all of you enough for all the love you showed me last night for my birthday,” Joe wrote in the caption of an Instagram carousel. “From the signs, to bday hats, a cake from my brothers, and DJ CRAZY TIMES?? Wow. Can’t wait to get back out there for round 2 tonight!!!”

Nick also posted an Instagram carousel, choosing to focus on Joe’s birthday rather than his brief stumble.

The Tour will return to Boston’s TD Garden on Wednesday, August 16. Last month, the brothers announced 54 additional dates across their North American, European, Australian, and New Zealand legs. The Tour will stretch into June 2024. See all of the dates here.

Indie Mixtape 20: Claud Leans Into Their ‘Mushy’ Romantic Side With ‘Supermodels’

After becoming the first artist to signed to Phoebe Bridgers’ label imprint Saddest Factory Records, Claud’s music has taken them to some pretty cool places. They’ve shared the stage with the likes of Paramore, Bleachers, and boygenius, and with their latest album Supermodels, they even got the chance to film a video with Paul Rudd.

While unexpected, Rudd’s cameo didn’t come from nowhere. Supermodels, which dropped in July as Claud’s second full-length release, features a song named after the actor. As a self-described shy person, Claud sings of attempting to emulate the kind of suave confidence his on-screen characters tend to project.

Like “Paul Rudd,” many of the songs on Supermodels seem torn straight from a page in Claud’s diary. The album tackles breakups, makeups, and relatable mid-20s identity crises. It pulls you in with lyrics about arguing at a bar about Regina Spektor or comparing yourself to photos of supermodels. Sweet, tender moments like the acoustic-driven ballad “Crumbs” or the earnest number “Every F*cking Time” add contrast to some of the album’s more blown-out indie pop numbers like “A Good Thing” and “Wet.”

To celebrate the release of Supermodels, Claud sits down with Uproxx to talk gender affirming health care, Justin Bieber, and burping the ABC’s in our latest Q&A.

What are four words you would use to describe your music?

Yearning, mushy, gay, pointless.

It’s 2050 and the world hasn’t ended and people are still listening to your music. How would you like it to be remembered?

I hope people remember my music as something that helped them come a little closer to figuring themselves out.

Who’s the person who has most inspired your work, and why?

It’s hard to pick just one person.

Where did you eat the best meal of your life and what was it?

My grandma’s holiday dinners are the greatest.

Tell us about the best concert you’ve ever attended.

Big Thief at a tiny venue in Ithaca, NY.

What song never fails to make you emotional?

“Basically” by STRFKR.

What’s the last thing you Googled?

“Paris to London train.”

Where’s the weirdest place you’ve ever crashed while on tour?

One time I slept underneath the desk in a hotel room because there were six or seven people in one room.

What’s your favorite city in the world to perform and what’s the city you hope to perform in for the first time?

My favorite city to perform in is Chicago because I grew up there, and the place I hope to perform in for the first time is Tokyo.

What’s one piece of advice you’d go back in time to give to your 18-year-old self?

Ask people more questions.

What’s one of your hidden talents?

I can burp the ABCs.

If you had a million dollars to donate to charity, what cause would you support and why?

Accessible gender affirming health care because it is crucial and can save a lot of lives.

What are your thoughts about AI and the future of music?

I don’t really know anything about AI, I’m a little afraid of it so I haven’t looked too much into it. Like all technology, I’m sure it will take away jobs from musicians but hopefully people will understand the value of artists and musicianship.

You are throwing a music festival. Give us the dream lineup of 5 artists that will perform with you and the location it would be held.

The dream location of my hypothetical music festival is on a beach off of Lake Michigan in or near Chicago. Five artists playing would be a Jack Antonoff solo set.

Who’s your favorite person to follow on Twitter, Instagram, or TikTok?

Grace Kuhlenschmidt is my favorite person to follow on the internet.

What’s the story behind your first or favorite tattoo?

My first tattoo is an outline of a piece of toast that I have matching with my friend Josh Mehling. We got it when we created our duo “Toast” in 2018.

What is your pre-show ritual?

Before every show, my band and I put our hands together and on the count of three yell “gay!”

Who was your first celebrity crush?

My first celebrity crush was Justin Bieber, obviously.

You have a month off and the resources to take a dream vacation. Where are you going and who is coming with you?

All of my friends are flying first class to Porto, Portugal and staying on the beach.

What is your biggest fear?

My biggest fear is missing an important family event.

Supermodels is out now via Saddest Factory Records. Find more information here.

Trump May Turn Himself In To Fulton County Jail During The First GOP Debate As ‘Counter-Programming’

Donald Trump may seem mad that he nabbed himself a fourth indictment, but is he really? After all, the former president has said criminal charges have done wonders for his polls. Speaking of, he might have a specific date when he could turn himself into Fulton County jail in Georgia, just to really put the screws to his already flailing opponents.

As per Raw Story, Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter Greg Bluestein went on MSNBC, where he speculated about how Trump will handle his fourth arraignment in only the last handful of months. Like his other 18 indictees in the Georgia election interference case, Trump has till next Friday to turn himself in. But, Bluestein ssaid, “My hunch is he’s not going to go under the cover of night.”

Bluestein said the talk of the town is that Trump is going to choose next Wednesday, the 23rd — which just so happens to be the day of the GOP primary debate he’s sworn up and down he’d be skipping. It’s possible, the reporter said, that Trump could see it as “counter-programming to the debate.”

Trump has always been theatrical and he’s always been petty, so it’s not beneath him to steal the thunder from the many Republicans looking to unseat him as head of the party. No doubt he’d love to stick it to Chris Christie, the most vocal anti-Trumpist running for the GOP ticket, who he’s reportedly terrified of debating anyway. If so, he’ll get to have his cake and eat it, too: avoid getting humiliated by Christie while robbing him and his other rivals of much-needed attention.

You can watch Bluestein’s MSNBC appearance in the video below.

Single dad taught himself to braid his daughter’s hair. Now he helps other dads do the same.

Philippe Morgese is a single dad with a daughter named Emma. She, like many children, happens to have hair.

Like most parents, Morgese is really hoping to do his part to make sure Emma becomes a fully-functioning and responsible member of society. He wants to make sure she grows up confident and well-adjusted. He also wants her to have a good male role model in her life. Ya know, like most of us dads do.

And he wants to make sure her hair looks nice. He didn’t have any people in his life who knew how to braid hair, so he taught himself.

SCIENCE FACT: Actively involved fathers can have a huge impact on their kids’ school performance.

Morgese got so good at hair braiding that he decided to start a class to help other dads.

SCIENCE FACT: The more a dad is involved in their kid’s life, the more the dad’s self-esteem increases.

The class got pretty popular over time. So much so that he ended up starting a Facebook page called the Daddy Daughter Hair Factory to help dads everywhere learn how to braid hair. He got a kid’s haircare company, SoCozy, to sponsor the class. He even built an incredibly handy website where dads like me, who get horrifically dirty looks from their daughters every time they try to do hair, can learn how to do it correctly.

The class is about more than braiding hair though.

The classes are really about dads and daughters bonding and connecting.

They turn off their screens. They focus on being together. And they just hang out.

SCIENCE FACT: Dads who play with their kids can have a positive impact in their kids ability to have stable relationships later in life.

It’s a win for everyone. Dads and daughters get to spend time with each other and they both get something out of it: new skills for dad and awesome hairstyles for their daughters.

I seriously can’t wait to learn how to do the three-strand braid and the braided elastic coverup.

NON-SCIENCE FACT: I’m looking forward to the day I can make my daughter’s hair look this good while not getting a raging death stare from her.

Watch Morgese and Emma show other dads how to braid hair in this Upworthy Original Video:

And feel free to share this with a dad in need.

The ‘Coraline’ Re-Release Went So Well, It’s Heading Back To Theaters Again

There was a time when bringing movies back into theaters was always marked by some occasion: the Harry Potter movies would return to theaters to celebrate another installment, ET rides his little bike back into theaters every decade or so, and Titanic returns every so often just so James Cameron can buy a new house. But for a beloved and innovative stop-motion film like Coraline, we don’t need an occasion. We just want to see a creepy little doll with button eyes learn about the perils of adulthood. And that’s enough reason!

The Oscar-nominated film Coraline returned to theaters for a limited release earlier this week and managed to rack up $4.91 million at the daily box office, putting it on the map with Barbenheimer. It was so popular, Fathom Events announced that the film will be screened again at the end of the month.

“We’re thrilled to see throngs of Laika fans come out in record numbers for the third straight year to revel in this Coraline theatrical experience, this year in stunning 4K,” Laika Studios’ chief marketing and operations officer David Burke said in a press release, via Gizmodo. “Our partnership with Fathom has solidified Laika’s modern cinematic classic as a must-see annual summer tradition.”

Released in 2009, Coraline, based on Neil Gaiman‘s novel of the same name, tells the story of a young girl and her famished cat who venture into a peculiar world found in her creepy new home. There, she finds was seems to be a better version of her life, but things are not as they seem. Also, the mom has buttons for eyes, and it will haunt your dreams for years. The voice cast includes Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Ian McShane, and Jennifer Saunders.

The film will return to theaters again on August 28th and 29th. You can check out theater locations here.
