21 memes that everyone who grew up in the ’90s totally understands

If you grew up in the ’90s then you were part of the last generation of kids who lived without being constantly connected to the internet. You lived during that last gasp of the analog era where most of your entertainment came on tape and if you wanted a new pair of Guess jeans or LA Gear shoes, you had to drive to the mall.

Also, if you wore parachute pant, aka “Hammer Pants,” people actually thought you were cool.

Families mattered on Friday nights.

People listened to rock ‘n’ roll because it was important.

Hip-hop was at its peak.

People spent time talking to each other instead of staring at their phones.

It was a time of hope and optimism.

Some folks over at Reddit have been sharing funny memes that explain exactly what life was like in the ’90s. From the terrible pastel-colored designs that were everywhere to the charming, but antiquated, technology kids today will never understand.

Here are 19 of the best memes from r/90s/.

1. 1992 was 30 years ago

Sorry, if that made you feel old.

2. “Go! Go!” (Fill in the blank)

This person is living the Gen X dream.

3. Oh snap!

There was no greater diss in 1991.

4. Make a run for the border

Does this picture make you instinctively think “You quiero Taco Bell”?

5. In the ’90s, every night was a Blockbuster night

It’s like looking back in time.

6. We’ll always have Chuck E. Cheese’s

8. These actually existed

How in the world did they cram 25 different colored pens into one super writing utensil?

9. Nu metal didn’t last long

A.D.I.D.A.S.

10. People aged quickly in the ’90s

This is what happens when you have children.

11. This weighed 25 pounds and went everywhere you went

I can still hear the sound of the rumpling plastic as I flip through the pages.

12. They got ‘Jerry Maguire’?

Of course they have “Jerry Maguire.” In fact, they have 500 copies of “Jerry Maguire.”

13. The hippest computer lab ever

After the iMac dropped, only vertified dorks used an IBM.

14. Just looking at this hurts

This may have hurt your fingers, but was probably safer than licking the battery to see if it still had “juice.”

15. It’s like they didn’t want you to play solitaire

Solitaire wasted more people’s time in 1998 than Instagram does in 2022.

16. In 1993 this could cure anything

Stomach ache? Flu? Munchausen’s syndrome? This unique combination would have you back on your feet in no time.

19. The only pattern that mattered in the ’90s

Throw on those shorts, then hop in your Miata and get yourself some action!

‘Couple’ was asked what they love about each other. Turns out they’re siblings with a beautiful bond.

“Love” is one of the most powerful words in the English language, yet it’s also one of the most broadly defined. We use the word “love” for so many things that are neither the same nor equal—our families, our friends, our romantic partners, our hobbies—even our favorite foods.

When we think of a “love story,” we almost exclusively imagine a tale of romance, but that’s not the only kind of love story there is. Sometimes the strongest, most meaningful loves of our lives aren’t romantic at all.

David Shane creates videos in which he approaches couples in public and asks them to share three things they love about each other, resulting in some major #couplegoals moments. But one “couple” he approached had a surprising answer to that question, one that moved both them and the people watching the video afterward to tears.

Blane approached a man and woman sitting on a bench at a mall and asked his signature question—”Excuse me, could you give me three things you love about each other?” The woman responded, “Well, this is my brother,” and proceeded to share that she loved that they were related and that they care about each other—typical family stuff. But as she started elaborating, the beautiful bond they share became more and more apparent.

This is one you just have to watch:

People were understandably moved seeing this brother and sister express their love for one another through serious life challenges.

“This is what love looks like. 🥹 What a truly beautiful sibling relationship, 😭🫶🏽” wrote one commenter.

“I gotta stop watching these right after I do my makeup,” wrote another.

“Gosh, I love questions like this that remind us to SEE two people sitting in a mall as the true, precious humans they are,” shared another. “We walk past people every day, all day long and never get to know their story. There must be so many stories we miss. This is the beauty of social media. I wish both of these sweet souls the very best. So glad they have each other.”

Many of us have people with whom we share a deep connection but may not always share our feelings freely. This video is a good reminder to let our loved ones know what they mean to us and to treasure all the love stories in our lives, whether romantic, platonic or familial.

13-yr-old’s completely unique ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ rendition was so great it even wowed Queen

At Upworthy, we’ve shared a lot of memorable “America’s Got Talent” auditions, from physics-defying dance performances to jaw-dropping magic acts to heart-wrenching singer-songwriter stories. Now we’re adding Angelina Jordan’s “AGT: The Champions” audition to the list because wow.

Jordan came to “AGT: The Champions” in 2020 as the winner of Norway’s Got Talent, which she won in 2014 at the mere age of 7 with her impressive ability to seemingly channel Billie Holiday. For the 2020 audition, she sang Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” but a version that no one had ever heard before.

With just her Amy Winehouse-ish voice, a guitar and a piano, Jordan brought the fan-favorite Queen anthem down to a smooth, melancholy ballad that’s simply riveting to listen to.

Especially considering that Jordan was only 13 years old when she did this.

Watch:

What this video doesn’t show is Heidi Klum hitting the Golden Buzzer faster than you can say, “Nothing really matters to me.” The judges were blown away by Jordan’s performance, as were the people in the comments.

“That’s a ONE in A BILLION voice right there. Just amazing,” wrote one commenter.

“I am typically not a fan of songs being redone particular to such a magnitude,” shared another. “They almost always fall short of the original. But to completely rearrange a song in the manner that she has, from a legend, and then make you forget about how the original even sounded because her rendition is so good is utterly amazing.”

“As Freddie once said, ‘Do whatever you want with my music as long as you don’t make it boring.’ I think he’d really like this,” shared another.

Though Queen’s lead vocalist Freddie Mercury is no longer with us, the band did offer words of praise for Jordan’s performance, retweeting her audition video with the comment, “Wow! What a rendition of #BohemianRhapsody.”

“Bohemian Rhapsody” is such an iconic song, it’s hard for anyone to do a cover of it justice. But 13-year-old Angelina Jordan managed it masterfully.

Jordan would move on to the Top 10 in “AGT: The Champions,” and though she didn’t take home the top prize, she did impress the audience with another classic rock tune, Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.” You can enjoy that performance below, and you can follow Angelina Jordan—who is now 17 and still singing her heart out—on YouTube and TikTok.

Did Kendrick Lamar Diss Big Sean On His Song ‘Element?’

Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers continues to rack up impressive streaming numbers. However, thanks to a viral clip floating around online, his 2017 song “Element” has reentered the mainstream hip-hop chatter. Unlike the official version, Kendrick’s bars in this recording have very clearly named targets. So, did Kendrick diss Big Sean on the unreleased version of “Element?”

The lyrics in question make it hard to refute: “Big Sean keep sneak dissin’ I let it slide / I think his false confidence got him inspired / I can’t make them respect you, baby, it’s not my job / You’re finally famous for who you date, not how you rhyme boy/ Cute ass raps, get your puberty up.” However, during his causal chat with TMZ, Big Sean shut down the idea of any lingering beef between the two.

He went as far as to dismiss the supposed leaked verse, saying, “Ain’t no diss. If it was a diss, it would be a diss!”

Big Sean was the only person mentioned in the unreleased recording. French Montana and Jay Electronica both caught strays. Even Meek Mill and Drake are referenced. Since Kendrick Lamar’s verse on Big Sean’s 2013 “Control” song, supporters of each rapper have speculated that they’ve subtly taken jabs at each other on records throughout the years.

Oh Good Lord, Kevin Spacey Brought Back His Christmas Eve ‘Let Me Be Frank’ Videos, This Time With Tucker Carlson

Kevin Spacey Tucker Carlson

Five Christmas Eves ago Kevin Spacey gifted the world with the biggest lump of coal imaginable: a profoundly uncomfortable video in which he resurrected House of Cards antihero Frank Underwood. Spacey had been fired from the Netflix show amidst sexual misconduct allegations, but bringing him back for awkward videos became a holiday tradition — at least until 2020, when he released what appeared to be his swan song. Turns out he wasn’t done.

On Christmas Eve 2023, while many were baking cookies, hanging with family members, and spiking egg nog, no less than Tucker Carlson released what he called a “Christmas Eve election surprise.” It featured one of those under-produced interviews he’s been making since being canned by Fox News. The twist? This time his guest was overtly lying.

That guest was Kevin Spacey, or rather Kevin Spacey in the guise of Frank Underwood. Tucker introduced him as a dark horse who could jump into the 2024 presidential race and “rescramble the calculus of electoral politics” (whatever that means).

During their chat, Spacey’s Underwood predictably played coy on fake-running for president, but he did maintain that, in today’s climate — a climate greatly shaped by people like Tucker Carlson, mind you — D.C. badly needs some “adults in the room.”

Throughout the chat, Carlson found himself aggressive-nod-agreeing with a monstrous corrupt politician who schemed and murdered his way to the top, even as he advised political leaders to stop listening to “trolls” and people like Tucker Carlson. Spacey’s Underwood also dragged “trigger warnings.”

Was Spacey himself trolling Tucker Carlson? Who’s to say. We live in deeply confused times and maybe this Christmas Eve surprise is the deeply confused gift we all deserve. You can watch it in the tweet embedded above. Or you could just keep hanging with your loved ones. That sounds like a nicer way to spend the holidays.

Megan Thee Stallion Jokingly Slammed Spotify Users Online, And They Went Full-On Savage With Their Clap Backs

Megan Thee Stallion has built a tougher-than-nails musical persona. But the “Cobra” rapper’s Hottie fans seem to be the true savages. As Megan enjoys some downtime for the holidays and between her next big gig (2023 New Year’s Rockin’ Eve), she’s been filling her non-working moments with casual chat with her followers via her Instagram Live.

During Megan’s latest broadcast on Saturday, December 24, she seemed to asserted that Spotify is her least favorite streaming platform. She jokingly turned that disdain toward users of the service. As her friend off-camera asked Megan about the provider, she replied, “B*tch, Spotify?… I feel like if you’re 15, you have Spotify.”

Her fans, who are Spotify users, didn’t take too kindly to the humorous shade, clapping back. Check out a few of their responses below.

“Girl, Spotify is much better than Apple Music other than the music quality,” wrote one user.

“Spotify literally has artists that have great music that aren’t on iTunes. The playlists you can compile on Spotify are better than iTunes,” penned another.

“She’s never getting a Spotify playlist cover again,” added another.

“I’m literally listening to her song on Spotify, LMAO,” wrote one fan.

However, some folks did join in to side with Megan, declaring their allegiance to other apps such as Apple Music.

Brian Cox Torched ‘The Guy Who Runs Warner Bros. Discovery Now’ For The Way He’s Treated Turner Classic Movies, Which He’ll ‘Defend To The Death’

Logan Roy Succession Brian Cox
HBO

Two years ago nobody except industry insiders knew David Zaslav. Today people can’t wait to line up to talk smack about him. Since taking over Warner Bros. Discovery, the mogul has made one bizarre, hated move after another, including mucking with HBO Max (now, confusingly, just Max), cancelling fully completed movies, even deep-sixing hundreds of classic Looney Tunes shorts. He’s even pissed off the easily pissed-off the erstwhile Logan Roy.

Per IndieWire, Brian Cox penned an op-ed for Variety in which he sung the praises of Turner Classic Movies, which since 1994 has treated cable-havers to, well, classic movies 24/7, 365 days a year. Over the summer TCM fell victim to Zaslav’s Zaslav-ing, with budget cuts leading to the removal of some of its longtime staff. There was such a furor that Zaslav got a call from Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Paul Thomas Anderson, who coaxed him into backing off a bit from his gutting. Now it’s Cox’s turn to tell Zaslav what’s up.

“TCM has been under threat lately, particularly by the guy who runs Warner Bros. Discovery now; they don’t understand the value of it,” Cox wrote. “But TCM is always illuminating, it’s revealing, it’s invaluable as an actor. It’s like mother’s milk to me. I’ll defend it to the death.”

For Cox, TCM isn’t just a place to watch great, older movies. It’s also where he continues to shape his craft.

“I work with a lot of young actors, and I say, Look at your craft. Look at where you can see great work,” Cox writes. “To rediscover people like Irene Dunne, or Kay Francis, or Bette Davis in her glory. I’m an addict; I’m an absolute addict for that.”

He praised the “tremendous work” of the late Robert Osborne, who for decades introduced movies on the channel. He loves the current curators, too, who have been adding more foreign fare to their coffers.

“The films they show meet an extraordinarily high standard, in a world where art is forever getting debased,” Cox writes. “But TCM is always reinventing itself: It’s modern and it’s classical.”

For whatever it’s worth, Zaslav has maintained that he’s a huge fan of TCM and doesn’t want it disappeared (although maybe he could cut a deal with Comcast, who a few years back made it harder for customers to watch it as part of their regular subscription package).

Still, a lot of people don’t trust Zaslav with much these days. Last week, when rumor spread that Warner Bros. Discovery may merge with Paramount, many were instantly worried about what he’d do to the likes of SpongeBob Squarepants, Yellowstone, The Godfather saga, and many Tom Cruise pictures.

LeBron James Wants The NBA To Bring Christmas Jerseys Back

In the early 2010s, the NBA introduced special edition uniforms that teams playing on Christmas got to wear. They often featured something like holiday-themed script lettering or bright colors and, while not all hits, were mostly well received.

However, the Christmas uniforms went away when Nike took over the NBA’s uniform business, as they opted for expanding every team’s uniform set with the standard Home and Away unis, along with the Statement and City edition unis (plus some retros and others they’ve thrown in at seemingly random). Given the NBA and Nike have expanded uniform sets and every team has so many, it is a bit odd they didn’t continue making special uniforms for the 10 teams that got Christmas day games.

Among those who want the Christmas unis back is LeBron James, who was watching a clip of a Christmas moment from when he was in Cleveland and decided to wonder aloud on Twitter as to why they went away.

I’m not sure we need more uniforms, as the effort at creating new unis each year has led to some lackluster designs, but it is an excuse to bring back one of the best NBA commercials ever from 2013 promoting that year’s Christmas unis.

The sleeved jersey era wasn’t for everyone, but this commercial still rocks.

Eastern Michigan And South Alabama Brawled After A Postgame Sucker Punch

emu usa brawl
TikTok/south_alabamian via Twitter

There has been plenty of conversation about how much bowl games still matter in college football, with the College Football Playoff continuing to expand, constant realignment, and players opting out of bowls for the transfer portal or the NFL Draft. However, it doesn’t take too long watching the games themselves in December to see how much the players still care about winning a bowl game.

At the 68 Ventures Bowl on Saturday, South Alabama absolutely boat raced Eastern Michigan, winning 59-10 and after the game the Jaguars stood out on the field to sing the fight song with the fans in Mobile, as it was effectively a home game for the Jags. Apparently that loss was too much for EMU defensive back Korey Hernandez, who ran back on the field and sucker punched a South Alabama player, sparking a massive brawl in the end zone.

It was a wild scene and it was an extremely ridiculous move by Hernandez, who not only made a terrible decision to run out and punch a guy from behind, but it was even dumber because he ran over there without his helmet on and started a fight with a bunch of guys still wearing their helmets. That’s just bad situational awareness from the young man and might be telling for why they lost by 49 if he thought punching a guy in the helmet while not wearing one himself was going to result in anything other than getting the brakes beaten off of him.
