Hero medical alert dog tells her owners to check on their diabetic daughter just in time

It’s been around 20,000 years since dogs were first domesticated to live alongside humans as companions and helpers. But dogs’ ability to detect specific medical problems and alert people to them has only been purposefully honed in the past 100 years or so.

Thanks to social media, the incredible abilities of trained dogs to do life-saving work is becoming more visible. People who use medical alert dogs to recognize signs that humans might miss have been sharing what it looks like when their dogs are doing their job, and it’s quite remarkable to witness.

In a video that’s been viewed 2 million times on Instagram, one family shared what happened when their English lab, Spy, sensed something wrong with his family member who has type 1 diabetes. The young girl was asleep, and her parents had just done a pump change and given her insulin an hour before, so they had no reason to think anything might be wrong.

But Spy knew otherwise. Diabetes service dogs can tell when something goes awry with a diabetic person’s blood sugar. According to The diaTribe Foundation, Diabetic Alert Dogs (or DADs) are trained to smell compounds that are released from someone’s body when their blood sugar is too high or too low. Scientists aren’t entirely sure what the dogs are smelling, but the research indicates it’s likely ketones for high blood sugar and a natural chemical called isoprene for low blood sugar. Whatever it is, dogs can smell it, and when they do, they’re trained to alert someone.

Watch Spy get her owners’ attention and lead them to their daughter’s room where something had gone wrong:

A normal blood sugar ranges from around 70 to around 150, so well into the 300s is not good. Spy was so diligent in getting her people’s attention, taking them to where the problem was and and making sure they were attending to their daughter, and people loved seeing her in action.

“This gives me chills, good Spy! She takes such good care of her girl,” wrote another.

“Does Spy have a medical office, because I’m only trusting his medical advice from this day forward…” wrote one commenter.

“That’s cool, my dog’s special talent is vomiting when she doesn’t get enough attention,” joked one person.

“For those who don’t know, a medical alert animal will always come and find someone when their person needs help. So if you see one looking at you, follow them. You will help save a life,” shared another.

Some people shared that they’ve had or known dogs who could detect when a diabetic family members blood sugar was off, even when they weren’t trained for it, showing how some dogs seem to be made for this kind of service. It’s been estimated that a dog’s sense of smell is 1,000 to 10,000 times stronger than a human’s. Dogs also have good scent memory, which makes them ideal helpers for medical conditions that include body scent signals that humans can’t detect but dogs can.

People often say we don’t deserve dogs, and when you see a medical alert dog in action it’s hard to argue otherwise. Learn more about medical service dogs here and follow @ouronederfulboggslife on Instagram, where Spy helps her family educate people about living with type 1 diabetes, here.

‘Wu-Tang Clan: The Saga Continues… The Las Vegas Residency’ Is Set To Kick Off In 2024

Las Vegas residencies are all the rage these days after formerly being thought of as the realm of the washed. Adele just extended hers another several months, Usher just wrapped his up, and the Sphere’s owners are allegedly looking into the pricey proposition of convincing Beyoncé to take her talents to the Strip.

But if those big-voice singers aren’t your wave — let’s say you’re looking for something… grittier — I have some good news: Hip-hop is getting in on the action, beginning with Wu-Tang Clan, who announced a four-show homestand at Virgin Hotel to kick off (heh) Super Bowl weekend, with more dates to come.

Tickets for the residency go on sale on Friday, December 15, while the four shows will include February 9 and 10 and March 22 and 23. Future dates are expected to be announced in the coming months (presumably after receipts from the first four shows are tallied up).

The Clan has been active creatively lately, with RZA producing a symphony concert to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the group’s seminal debut album, Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), and the group as a whole touring throughout North America with De La Soul and Nas. The group also participated in the BET Hip Hop Awards’ Hip-Hop 50 tribute.

The season will actually bump up to “December 14, 7:00 PM ET” for those who want to get a jump on watching Reacher eat a horrible diet while still somehow staying cut. Are you still looking for the perfect gift to give to your insufferable MAGA-loving relative this Christmas? Well look no further!

On Tuesday, former president Donald Trump announced that he’s selling NFTs of his scowling, internet-breaking mugshot. If you act now, you can even get a piece of the suit that he wore when he surrounded to authorities. “Due to the great Excitement and Success of my previous TRUMP DIGITAL TRADING CARDS, we’re doing it again – The MugShot Edition, available RIGHT NOW,” he wrote on Truth Social. “Plus, buy 47 cards and get a piece of the suit I wore for the ‘Mugshot Photo,’ and also get an invite to a Gala Dinner with me at Mar-a-Lago! Don’t wait, they’ll go FAST (I believe!). I’m happy if you’re happy. Have fun. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!”

In a video to accompany the post, Trump referred to himself as “your favorite president” before describing the cards, many of which have him dressed up as off-brand superheroes. “Some people call these cards pop art or modern art. I wish I looked as good as I do on those cards, that I can tell you. They give me muscles where, believe me, I don’t have them.” That’s the most humble thing Trump has ever said — unlike on the website for the cards, which describes the suit and tie he wore in his mugshot as the “most historically significant artifact in United States history.” Take that, U.S. Constitution.

You can see the hideous cards for yourself here.

Is Kanye West Going On A World Tour In 2024?

kanye west performing

With Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign hosting a listing for their upcoming joint album Vultures, fans have begun speculating about whether or not the album will be accompanied by a tour. Ever since Kanye’s antisemitism scandal, he hasn’t exactly had potential sponsors leaping at the chance to work with him (especially with the contemporary political climate). But that hasn’t stopped a variety of profiles on Twitter (which still says “Twitter” in the URL so shoo with all that “X” talk) from posting screenshots of a purported “merch site” listing concert tickets for a Vultures World Tour.

The site has supposedly been deactivated, but at this point, premature announcements and half-baked ideas are par for the course for Kanye, who gave a quarter-hearted attempt at running for president in 2020, slapped together the last few rus of his YZY Supply fashion line, was apparently a terrible business partner at Adidas, rarely showing up for meetings and playing porn for other attendees if he ever did show up, and announcing a “worldwide listening event” for Vultures, only to scale it down to a “rave” in Miami when he finally realized that no venues at the scale he envisioned want to work with him anymore. Because, again, he’s said some truly wild stuff — like “praising Hitler” wild — in his efforts to be an “edgy” artiste. Welcome to the edge, I guess.

If you’re one of those people who is only too happy to get scammed by Ye — again — in the interest of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy nostalgia, keep an eye out. I’m sure there are still some backyards or skinhead rallies or something he can book.

Right now, Nicki Minaj’s tour dates for her latest album are simply known as the Pink Friday 2 World Tour, including what is listed on Live Nation’s website. The Gag City Headquarters package gives a bunch of exclusive perks, including access to a Minaj-themed lounge.

Fans online have also just started dubbing the Pink Friday 2 World Tour as the “Gag City Tour,” partially as a joke online — which has resulted in a bunch of memes. So, basically, they are the same thing if you do encounter it.

More than a career: How two project managers are driving environmental change

Do you ever feel like you could be doing more when it comes to making a positive impact on your community? The messaging around giving back is louder than ever this time of year, and for good reason; It is the season of giving, after all.

If you’ve ever wondered who is responsible for bringing many of the giving-back initiatives to life, it’s probably not who you’d expect. The masterminds behind these types of campaigns are project managers.

Using their talents and skills, often proven by earning certifications from the Project Management Institute (PMI), project managers are driving real change and increasing the success rate on projects that truly improve our world.

To celebrate the work that project managers are doing behind the scenes to make a difference, we spoke with two people doing more than their part to make an impact.

In his current role as a Project Management Professional (PMP)-certified project manager and environmental engineer for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Joshua Williard oversees the cleanup of some of America’s most contaminated and hazardous waste sites.

Courtesy of Joshua Williard

“Recently, I was part of a four-person diving team sent to collect contaminated sediment samples from the bottom of a river in Southeastern Virginia. We wanted to ensure a containment wall was successfully blocking the release of waste into an adjacent river,” Williard says.

Through his work, Josh drives restoration efforts to completion so contaminated land can again be used beneficially, and so future generations will not be at risk of exposure to harmful chemicals.

“I’ve been inspired by the natural world from a young age and always loved being outside. As I gained an understanding about Earth’s trajectory, I realized that I wanted to be part of trying to save it and keep it for future generations.

“I learned the importance of using different management styles to address various project challenges. I saw the value in building meaningful relationships with key community members. I came to see that effective project management can make a real difference in getting things done and having on-the-ground impact,” Williard says.

In addition, Monica Chan’s career in project management has enabled her to work at the forefront of conservation efforts with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF-US). She most recently has been managing a climate change project, working with a diverse team including scientists, policy experts, data analysts, biologists, communicators, and more. The goal is to leverage grants to protect and restore mangroves, forests, and ecosystems, and drive demand in seaweed farming – all to harness nature’s power to address the climate crisis.

“As the project management lead for WWF-US, I am collaborating across the organization to build a project management framework that adapts to our diverse projects. Given that WWF’s overarching objectives center on conserving nature and addressing imminent threats to the diversity of life on Earth, the stakes are exceptionally high in how we approach projects,” says Chan.

“Throughout my journey, I’ve discovered a deep passion for project management’s ability to unite people for shared goals, contributing meaningfully to environmental conservation,” she says.

With skills learned from on-the-job experience and resources from PMI, project managers are the central point of connection for social impact campaigns, driving them forward and solving problems along the way. They are integral to bringing these projects to life, and they find support from their peers in PMI’s community.

PMI has a global network of more than 300 chapters and serves as a community for project managers – at every stage of their career. Members can share knowledge, celebrate impact, and learn together through resources, events, and other programs such as PMI’s Hours for Impact program, which encourages PMI members to volunteer their time to projects directly supporting the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

“By tapping into PMI’s extensive network and resources, I’ve expanded my project management knowledge and skills, gaining insights from seasoned professionals in diverse industries, including environmental management. Exposure to different perspectives has kept me informed about industry trends, best practices, and allowed me to tailor my approach to the unique challenges of the non-profit sector,” Chan says.

“Obtaining my PMP certification has been a game-changer, propelling not only my career growth, but also reshaping my approach to daily projects, both personally and professionally,” Chan says. Research from PMI shows that a career in project management means being part of an industry on the rise, as the global economy will need 25 million new project professionals by 2030 and the median salary for project practitioners in the U.S. is $120K.

PMI’s mission is to help professionals build project management skills through online courses, networking, and other learning opportunities, help them prove their proficiency in project management through certifications, and champion the work that project professionals, like Joshua and Monica, do around the world.

For those interested in pursuing a career in project management to help make a difference, PMI’s Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certification could be the starting point to help get your foot in the door.
