‘SNL’ cast can’t keep it together during a sketch where Ego Nwodim battles her steak dinner

Most episodes of “Saturday Night Live” are scheduled so the funnier bits go first and the riskier, oddball sketches appear towards the end, in case they have to be cut for time. But on the February 4 episode featuring host Pedro Pascal (“The Mandalorian,” “The Last of Us”), the final sketch, “Lisa from Temecula,” was probably the most memorable of the night.

That’s high praise because it was a strong episode, with a funny “Last of Us” parody featuring the Super Mario Brothers and a sketch where Pascal played a protective mother.

In “Lisa from Temecula,” Paul, played by Pascal, takes a few friends out for dinner, played by Punkie Johnson, newcomer Molly Kearney and breakout star Bowen Yang. The trouble comes when Johnson’s sister Lisa, played by Ego Nwodim, orders her steak “extra, extra well done.”

The sketch is a play on the notion that it’s a faux pas to order well-done steak, especially in a fancy restaurant. However, Lisa doesn’t care and won’t tolerate “one speck of red” on her steak.

The sketch is one of the rare moments on “SNL” where things are so funny that the cast breaks character. Pascal has difficulty getting through his lines and Yang has to cover his face because he can’t stop laughing. But Nwodim only has one small break in the scene and keeps it together as the sketch’s comedy core.

“Lisa from Temecula” got a lot of attention on social media and Nwodim later thanked the sketch’s writers Alex English, Gary Richardson and Michael Che.

Teacher in Japan shares mind-blowing differences between her school and schools in the U.S.

When you live in the same country your whole life, it’s easy to think of things as “normal” simply because it’s the way they’re always done. One of the best ways to divest yourself of that notion is to go live in another country for a while, because very quickly, you start to see things you thought of as a given—or never thought about at all because it never dawned on you that they could be different—are actually cultural norms that don’t exist everywhere.

An American teacher who lives in Japan offers a perfect example of how the norms of different countries can contrast sharply.

On her TikTok channel, @hito.bito, the teacher shared a video called “Things about my Japanese school that could send Americans into a coma,” and the differences she described are mind-blowing.

She begins with, “We all have to change from outdoor to indoor shoes as soon as we enter the school. And no, I’ve never seen any love notes or confessions in the shoe cubbies.” She shows herself changing into comfy slippers after entering the school. Definitely a good way to keep the floors cleaner.

Not that cleanliness is an issue for schools in Japan, since the students—not janitors, the students—clean the whole school daily.

“You don’t know clean until you’ve been to a Japanese school because these kids clean the school from top to bottom every single day,” she shared.

People familiar with the Montessori approach to education are familiar with the idea, but it’s not at all the standard practice of most public schools in the U.S. Perhaps it should be?

Another difference she pointed out was the lunch kids are served—or rather that they serve themselves. Usually, it’s some kind of rice, vegetables and protein, and it all looks delicious.

Of course, not every difference is a positive.

“Now, what sends me into an absolute spiral almost daily is that they leave the windows open and there’s no heating or cooling in the hall so I have to walk around in a coat,” she shared, showing herself wearing a parka indoors. This practice probably has more to do with Covid and air circulation than a cultural norm (I lived in Japan 20 years ago and don’t recall this being a regular practice), but even taking proactive steps to keep the air clean is a far cry from schools here, even in the Covid era.

She also shared some hair, makeup and piercing rules that are far stricter than most schools in the U.S. (She stated in a later video that the reason for the low ponytail rule is that kids are required by law to wear helmets when biking and most Japanese kids bike to school, so the hairstyle rule allows for safe helmet use.)

People in the comments loved certain parts of Japanese school protocol, but others not so much. The consensus is that the cleaning habits are awesome—pretty much everyone felt that American kids should be cleaning their schools as well. The shoe change was a popular idea, too. Several Canadian commenters said they do that up north as well.

The hair, make-up and piercings, however, people were not so fond of. Americans do treasure our individuality and freedom to express ourselves. That’s a norm that’s pretty unshakable here.

We all have things that we can learn from one another, and when we share our customs and norms, sometimes we can find ways to improve or enrich our own culture. Now it’s just a matter of figuring out how to make the kids-cleaning-the-school thing happen in the US…

Owner of ‘cat burglar’ is forced to own up to her kitty’s obsession with criminal activity

Everyone knows that cats are interesting pets to own. Or maybe I should say live with because there doesn’t seem to be any “owning” cats. They do what they want, whenever they feel like it and lucky for their human roommates, they’re essentially born litter box trained.

As long as you scoop their poop, give them exactly 2.5 strokes on their heads at a 45 degree angle every fortnight, and keep them from ever seeing the bottom of their food bowl…they’ll let you play owner. The second you deviate from their reasonable expectation of living conditions, they’ll bite you. Given that cats do what they want no matter what their human says, it makes perfect sense that one woman found herself giving in to her cat’s daily burglaries.

Cleo is a domestic black cat that has taken it upon himself to break into people’s houses and cars to remove items he wants for himself.

Does a cat need expensive shape wear? No, because they don’t wear clothes, but if you ask Cleo, he might just have plans to wear that cute dress he stole the week before. But the mischievous cat didn’t always steal other people’s belongings. Jean Weeks, the cat’s human explained that he didn’t start confiscating other people’s belongings until they went on vacation.

“This summer we were traveling and he got pretty crazy about stealing,” Weeks tells KNS 5. “A couple of the neighbors have told me that he’s climbed into their house through their window.”

Nothing seems to deter the furry thief, either. He’s been caught on video, he’s been scolded and even had a visit to the big house (aka the vet’s office), to no avail. Now his human has a box of shame she keeps all of the things Cleo has collected inside so the neighbor’s can stop by and get their stuff.

Someone (Matt Gaetz?) Left A Motion To Boot Kevin McCarthy From His House Speaker Gig In A Bathroom

It’s been said that politicians are really failed theater kids. Rarely has that felt more applicable than with today’s GOP-led House. Since Republicans took over in January, chaos has reigned, thanks to MAGA brats like Matt Gaetz, who kicked off things off by almost singlehandedly dragging out Kevin McCarthy’s becoming Speaker of the House. Gaetz even nearly got his block knocked off! Recently Gaetz been threatening to get him booted from the gig, which he might have almost done the other day, if a motion discovered in a bathroom is to be believed.

As caught by The Daily Beast, on Tuesday journalist Matt Laslo stumbled upon a curious document on the baby changing table in a restroom located under the House floor. It was a draft resolution from Gaetz himself calling for McCarthy’s ouster unless he agrees to “immediate, total compliance” with his demands.

The motion is dated Sept. 15, so that obviously never happened. But that is the day after McCarthy blew up on Gaetz, daring him to “file the f*cking motion.”

Did one of Gaetz’s underlings accidentally leave it in the bathroom, hoping someone would find it? Did the potential future gubernatorial candidate do it himself, in a dramatic attempt to spook McCarthy? Whatever the case, it’s yet another reminder that today’s House Republicans are a creatively weird mess.

Whoops, One Of Tucker Carlson’s Favorite Jan 6 Conspiracy Theories Just Had A Massive Hole Blown Into It

One of Tucker Carlson‘s biggest January 6 conspiracy theories just took a huge hit. Carlson has long floated accusations that one of the rioters, Ray Epps, was a secret government agent who riled up the crowd to breach the Capitol. Carlson based this claim on the fact that Epps had yet to be charged. That is no longer the case.

The two-time Trump voter has been slapped with a “misdemeanor count of disorderly or disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds” after reportedly reaching a plea deal with prosecutors.

Via Mediaite:

The former marine and one-time chapter president for the far-right Oath Keepers said he went to the Capitol on Jan. 6 in support of then-President Donald Trump. According to The New York Times, Epps was “seen on video encouraging demonstrators to march with him and enter the Capitol at one point. At another point, however, he pleads for restraint once it becomes clear the situation is turning violent. He also pushes past a police barricade into a restricted part of the Capitol grounds.”

Despite being a loyal MAGA soldier who was present at the January 6 attack, Epps and his wife were reportedly forced to flee their home after Carlson accused him of being an undercover fed and essentially painted a target on his back.

In July, Epps sued both Carlson and Fox News, who abruptly fired the anchor shortly after reaching a settlement with Dominion Voting Systems, who accused the conservative network of deliberately spreading false information about the 2020 election results.

The Tube Girl TikTok Phenomenon Explained, And Our Favorite Takes On The Trend

Because of TikTok, it’s prevalence in our lives, and people’s unending desire to go viral, shame is dead. That’s not a bad thing — sure, people breaking into elaborate dances in public places when you’re just trying to get on with your day can be grating. And disturbing the people around you by being obnoxious is never a good thing. But the confidence it takes to express yourself in a public place in a very public way is … often… ~ admirable ~.

That’s why the internet is obsessed with TikTok’s most recent phenomenon, Tube Girl. Tube Girl, aka Sabrina Bahsoon, rose to TikTok fame after a self-filmed video of her exuding confidence using the 0.5 lens on her phone while riding London’s Underground (hence the name — “tube”) went viral, inadvertently sparking a movement that champions self-confidence.

In the original video, which has garnered over 724k likes, nearly 2000 comments, and 30k shares, Bahsoon is seen hyping herself up in the middle of the train to Nicki Minaj and Flo Rida’s “Where Dem Girls At.” Over the caption “Being the friend who lives on the other side of the city so you gotta hype yourself up during the commute.”

A vast majority of the responses are positive, “Social anxiety is afraid of u girl” says one commenter, “EXCUSE ME??? THE CAMERAWORK AND FACE?!?!?!? simply giving,” says another, even Wendy’s UK account chimed in “Iconic Behavior only.”

Even the more self-conscious comments can’t stand up to Bahsoon’s vibe, “Imagine standing up to do this then silently sitting back down,” says one, to which Bahsoon replied, “I just kept jamming to my tunes.”

Word. We all need to embrace our inner Tube Girl. And this is exactly what people are doing — Bahsoon has sparked a movement known as the #tubegirleffect which has millions of TikTok users embracing self-confidence on subways, trains, and buses. And a lot of them are genuine — sure, there are also some parodies out there, but even the parodies are good-natured and positive.

Here are some of our favorite takes below.

Bahsoon’s TikTok virality has led to some real-life success as well. Not only has she garnered quite a large following but she also made a runway debut at MAC Cosmetics’ London fashion show. Reminding us that as good as the imitators are, no one does it quite like Tube Girl.

Life hack expert explains why Monday is by far the best day to have off

Since the pandemic, more Americans have the ability to choose where and when they work. So, TikTokker Jordan Howlett, known as Jordan the Stallion8, shared his thoughts on the best day of the week to take off. Howlett has earned mayor status on TikTok, earning over 11 million followers for his reactions, candid monologues, life hacks and fast-food tricks.

His post reacted to a post by TikTokker @Colinlowkey8, who claimed: “Having Monday off is infinitely better than having Friday off.”

Here’s why Jordan agrees:

“When you have Mondays off, it feels way better than having Fridays off. Because when you have a Friday off, that weekend feels a bit longer. However, when you start the next work week, that work week feels like an eternity to get to the next weekend,” Jordan explains. “However, when you have Mondays off now, your technical work week changes.”

@jordan_the_stallion8

#stitch with @colin #fypシ

He explains that when Monday is your day off, each day back in the office feels like the previous one, although you’re a day ahead. “So, it feels like you have Monday off and Friday off. So really, having Mondays off, and we should just do that permanently, it just feels better, I’m not gonna lie to you,” Jordan continues.

He must have been onto something because the video has gone viral, receiving over 10 million views and over 7,700 comments.

“Having Monday off is the best. No traffic. Mall is empty. It’s perfect,” the most popular commenter, GossipGirl, wrote. However, Manny pointed out one problem with Mondays off. Saturday is tough. “I’m off Sunday Monday, get off at 1:30 pm Saturday, and man, does the weekend feel like 3 days off, lol,” Manny.

No matter what day of the week you enjoy having off, the great news is that given the ever-changing American workweek, more and more people can choose when they like to work. So, if you’re a partier, you’ll probably love Fridays off. But if you love shopping in an empty mall, Monday is all you.

Brent Faiyaz’s Confessional ‘WYA’ Single Finds Him Entangled With A No-Good Lover

Any text conversation that begins with “WYA” never leads anywhere good, and Brent Faiyaz knows that better than anyone. The chronically toxic singer gets stuck in a bad relationship — again — on his new single “WYA” (stylized at “WY@”), an acronym for “where you at?” “I can feel them walls closing in,” he croons. “I can feel it all / I’m stuck in your claws / Try to run but I don’t get far.” Although he tries to “take accountability,” he finds himself caught up in a loop of addictive drama — and sending those three little letters that cause so much trouble.

Faiyaz is a little over a year removed from his latest full-length release, 2022’s Wasteland and just wrapped up the US leg of his F*ck The World, It’s A Wasteland Tour before jumping the pond to pick back up in Leeds, England. Although his last album resulted in a successful tour and brought him plenty of acclaim, the Maryland-born singer said that “it’s hard to listen to” because of how personal it is, so it’s good that he’s working on a follow-up as the release of “WYA” seems to indicate.

Check out “WYA” above and stay tuned for more from Brent Faiyaz.
