Tom Cruise Reportedly Earned A Breathtaking Amount Of Money For ‘Top Gun: Maverick’

Tom Cruise does not have to do this (“this” being defined as the death-defying stunt of your choice), but at least he’s getting paid well to do it.

Deadline theorizes that Cruise landed “an old-fashioned movie star deal” for Top Gun: Maverick, the second highest-grossing film of 2022. “While some tell us it’s well north of $100 million, others tell us it’s double that of his best payday on Mission: Impossible, which would get him to $200 million,” the report reads. If true, that’s one of the biggest — if not the biggest — paydays for an actor ever. That kind of money will take your breath away.

While Spider-Man: No Way Home ($814.1 million U.S., $1.92 billion worldwide) gets credit for bringing people back to the cinema after COVID, Top Gun: Maverick is single-handedly responsible for welcoming older, non-frequent adult moviegoers back, and making them feel more comfortable in theaters, playing strong coast to coast. The movie broke a slew of records including Cruise’s best opening ever at the box office ($126.7 million over three days, $248 million worldwide) and his highest-grossing movie ever ($718.7M, $1.49 billion global).

Maverick is a loose cannon, but dammit, he gets results.

Cruise will next appear in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, which comes out July 14. He deserves $200 million for the motorcycle scene alone.

If You Have 9 Hours To Spare, Mac DeMarco Just Dropped A Massive 199-Song Album, ‘One Wayne G’

Mac DeMarco released a new album today (April 21), One Wayne G. It’s not short: It has 199 songs and Spotify lists its length as about 9 hours and 30 minutes.

All of the songs are titled like dates, presumably named after the date the song was originally created. The album opener, for example, is called “20180512.” Some songs also have more proper titles after the numbers, like track No. 36, “20191009 I Like Her.” Most tracks are somewhere between 2 and 5 minutes long, but there are shorter songs and notably longer ones, too: “20200229 2” runs for 13:42 and “20190826” clocks in at 22:37. A lot of the songs are instrumental, but some feature singing from DeMarco, primarily the tracks with words in their titles.

One fan on Twitter put the size of the album in perspective, writing, “If you combined every single song (including demo versions of other songs) off every album & single in Mac Demarco’s streaming catalog EXCEPT for songs from this ONE album, it is a total of 164 songs; 35 songs shy of the only other album of his.”

The album arrives after a clip of DeMarco listening to then-unreleased demos made the rounds on TikTok recently. The video was shared in March and currently has nearly 2 million views. In it, DeMarco plays a funky instrumental track from his computer and happily listens before telling somebody standing out of frame, “It’s just garbage, but it’s fun to me.” (It’s hard to tell, but he may have actually said “fun to make” and not “fun to me.”) The clip is taken from a 2019 interview with DeMarco on PBS NewsHour.

That song, by the way, made it onto One Wayne G, as track No. 24, “20190724.” Previously (and probably still), fans referred to the track as “Garbage Funk.” Listen to that above and stream the album below.

‘Power Book II: Ghost’: The Land Of Lies In Season 3, Episode 6

(WARNING: Spoilers for this week’s Power Book II: Ghost episode will be found below.)

At this point in season three of Power Book II: Ghost, trust is a thing of the past. In episode five of the new season, the big reveal finally happened: Tariq learned that Lauren was still alive. Lauren, who was fed up with being under the watchful eye of Jenny Sullivan, broke out of the home she was in to meet with Tariq and confront him. Through it all, Tariq learned that Effie attempted to kill Lauren and that practically shatters him. In that same episode, Lorenzo confesses to Monet that he accidentally Zeke, and while he hoped his wife would forgive him, Monet told him to pack his bags and get out of the house. To make matters worse, she enlisted (or so we think) Gordo to kill Lorenzo by letting his family know that Lorenzo was the one who killed their father, Frank.

In the sixth episode of Power Book II: Ghost, titled “Land Of Lies,” Tariq is determined to figure out what happened with Lauren and what Brayden and Effie have to do with it. He confronts Brayden with a few punches and learns that Effie hijacked their original plan to get Lauren out of the city. Tariq turns his attention to Effie and confronts her about the situation. Unwilling to hear her reasoning, Tariq breaks things off with her and leaves her to fend for herself. He even takes things further by reconnecting with Diana, which sends Effie over the edge. Speaking of Diana, she and Salim are finally a thing of the past, and I couldn’t be happier about that.

Elsewhere, the Tejadas also hold a funeral and repast for Lorenzo in this episode. Dru is hell-bent on finding out who killed Lorenzo and retaliating. Dru believes the Russian gang is responsible, and though he wants to retaliate, Cane and Diana tell him to hold off and make sure before starting an all-out war. Dru goes against their wishes and attacks the Russians, and just as we all predicted, he sets off a war as they fire back at Lorenzo’s funeral. All of this went down with Monet’s approval and Gordo’s help despite both knowing the truth about Lorenzo’s death. It’s complete chaos and drama, on-brand with the Power franchise.

Here are some of the biggest takeaways that we have after season three’s sixth episode, “Land Of Lies”:

Tariq Can Blow Up Effie’s World Just As Badly As She Can Blow Up His

Tariq wasted no time confronting Effie about what happened to Lauren now that he knows she’s alive. Tariq pretends to take Effie out on a nice drive, all to bring her to the same lake that Effie tried to drown Lauren in. He demands answers from Effie, and when he gets them, he leaves Effie to figure out her way back to Stansfield while declaring their relationship as good as dead. To take things further, he re-sparks the flame between him and Diana. Effie finds out about this and sets out to shut down the coffee app they used to sell drugs through the Weston Holdings building. Thankfully, Cane stops her from causing irreversible damage, but in this moment, we see that while Tariq can blow up Effie’s world, she can blow his up just as badly. Deleting the app would’ve been a huge blow to the operation, just as Tariq removing Effie from the operation would be a huge blow to her longterm goals. At this point, Tariq and Effie can stay afloat together or make each other drown. It’s up to them.

Dru Did Everything He Told Cane Not To Do

Though they claim or try to act like they’re complete opposites, Dru and Cane share a lot of similarities. Earlier this season, amid Cane’s power trip, he suggested that they take out their childhood friends in order to assume a larger piece of the pie in the drug landscape so that they could sell more of Noma’s product. It was an idea Dru hated so much simply because of the consequences that would come of it, one of them being an all out. Fast forward to now, and the roles are reversed. Dru desperately seeks revenge for his father’s death, and he’s sure that the Russian gang is responsible as he believes it’s retaliation for them killing the Russian connect. Though Cane and Diana see the logic behind it, they tell Dru to calm down and not make a move until they’re absolutely sure because an all-out war will the result from a move like that. That only lasted for so long as Dru eventually orchestrates a plan, with help from Gordo, to kill one of the Russian gang members, which he successfully completes. As Cane and Diana predicted, a war is now in session as the Russians retaliated with a drive-by shooting at Lorenzo’s funeral. Cane is often described as impulsive and a hot-head, but in this episode, Dru showed those qualities from start to finish. Sure, it was all for his late father, but it could’ve been handled with more care as the Russians had nothing to do with Lorenzo’s death — something Gordo is well aware of.

Saxe Is Shameless In His Search For Redemption

Ever since the original Power series, Saxe has gone great lengths to put the St. Patrick family behind bars for as long as possible. He failed to do it with James and Tasha St. Patrick, and it’s been the same with Tariq so far in the series. There were moments that he did whatever was needed, legal and illegal, ethical and unethical, to imprison the St. Patricks, and it cost him a job as a prosecutor. Even though he’s working as a defense attorney for Tariq, Saxe has yet to give up on his goal of putting Tariq behind bars. Truthfully, Saxe is warranted in his pursuit of Tariq, but man, he could have some shame in it. He’s thrown himself at the feet of Jenny Sullivan, which could be a result of both his feelings for her and his desire to lock up Tariq. However, he’s also playing Davis, who is the guy who saved from being thrown into the streets without a job in season one. Saxe’s morals, ethics, and anything else he could stand on are all out of the window. Even if he wins and puts Tariq in jail (and keeps him there), there will be some price he has to pay for the way he’s gone about it. Sullivan may dispose of him, and Davis will surely do the same. It all remains to be seen in future episodes.

Tariq, Brayden, And Effie Share Equal Blame For Their Impending Downfall

Within the main events in episode six, there’s a bit of blame game happening between Tariq, Brayden, and Effie in regards to the Lauren situation. Tariq believes it’s Effie’s fault for how things have played out, as she took things too far with Lauren, which led to the feds finding her and using her for their RICO case. Effie casts blame on both Tariq and Brayden. In her eyes, Tariq is at fault for thinking Lauren would relocate and keep her mouth closed, and Brayden is at fault for not handling business and taking care of Lauren to avoid a mess like their current one. Brayden blames Effie for the same reason Tariq does — for interrupting their plan and putting them in their current mess. The fact is that each of them shares equal blame in this situation. Tariq leads the operation, so getting too close to Lauren with everything he has going on is why he has to take some of the blame. Brayden is Tariq’s sidekick, yet, he didn’t make sure he and Tariq’s plan was complete. Lastly, Effie took things to a new level by trying to kill Lauren and not completing her plan. Tariq, Brayden, and Effie all have their faults in the situation, and with the new information they have about the feds current case against them, they should spend less time finger-pointing and more time staying low and out of trouble.

New episodes of ‘Power Book II: Ghost’ are available on the STARZ app on Fridays at 12:00 am EST and on the STARZ TV channel at 8:00 pm EST.

Music Artists Lost Their Blue Checks On Twitter And Their Reactions Are All Over The Place

Today (April 20), several Twitter users lost their blue check marks which indicate a once-coveted verified status. While those who wish to pay $8 a month for their blue check may continue to have the marker on their profile as subscribers to Twitter Blue, many artists, public figures, and entertainers are opting not to put any more money into Elon Musk’s pockets.

While many legacy verified Twitter users were aware that today was going to be the day they lost their blue checks, it came as a surprise to some artists, including St. Vincent.

“Where the F did my blue check go?,” she asked.

It seems she was quickly made aware of the new policy, as she quickly followed up the tweet expressing that she has already paid her Twitter dues.

“So you’re telling me I have to pay top dollar to be allowed into a new velvet rope circle of hell? I thought our brilliant collective musings, time, attention, and the depression/anxiety resulting from said attention WERE the payment,” said Vincent. “Lol.”

Charli XCX also noted that she had lost her blue check, but feels that her new unverified status is on-brand for her.

“officially no longer an officially verified artist,” she said. Ii love being unofficial and unverified. it’s very moi.”

Indie darlings Tegan and Sara are also among those who lost their blue checks. They don’t intend to pay for theirs, but still stan Rihanna, who is opting to do otherwise.

Singer and prolific songwriter Nija outright refuses to pay for her blue check. But with credits for Beyoncé, Kehlani, Drake, and Summer Walker, you should know who Nija is by now.

“Blue check gone & I’ll be damned if I pay for one,” she said.

Rapper Reese LaFlare expressed his confusion over the loss of his blue checking, noting that the checks were originally issued to artists, entertainers, and public figures.

“Lol how they take away A KNOWN PUBLIC FIGURE verification,” he asked.

Tyla Yaweh simply noted “They took my blue check lol,” while Russ embraced his new check-less status.

“no blue check is the new blue check,” said Russ.

The Game also expressed that he’s not worried about losing his verification badge, as long as the money keeps rolling in.

“Check gone but the checks still coming,” he said.

Latto Challenges Her Opps To ‘Put It On Da Floor’ With Her New Single

Latto is not here to entertain anyone’s beef. On her latest single, “Put It On Da Floor,” she reminds everyone that she’s here to stay, and that she’s not a flash in the pan.

Over a blazing beat, Latto warns her haters not to mess with her, because she’s not afraid to strike back.

“I done done it all / feel like Shawty Lo / Laughin’ to the bank / but sh*t is not a joke / Say she got a problem? / Imaginary smoke / B*tches said it’s up / then put it on the floor,” she raps on the song’s chorus.

Last year, Latto’s sophomore album, 777 garnered her much buzz with singles like “Big Energy” and “Sunshine.” In a recent interview with Billboard, she revealed that she is already hard at work on her third album.

Though she has remained mum about her upcoming new music, she teases that it’s unlike anything she’s ever done before. She also noted that she takes a lot of inspiration from her peers in the rap game.

The Kid Laroi Grapples With A Heartbreaking Loss On His New Song ‘Where Does Your Spirit Go’

Following a buzzy performance at Coachella, Australian rapper and singer The Kid Laroi has shared a new song, “Where Does Your Spirit Go”

On the new song, Laroi goes through the stages of grief, as he mourns a friend of his. At this point in the grieving process, he hasn’t accepted that his loved one is gone.

“Numb today, but tomorrow I’ll feel it / Truth is worse every time that I hear it / Know you’re gone but tell me, where did your spirit go? / Run away from the way that I’m feeling / Maybe that’s just the way that I’m healing / Know you’re gone but tell me, where did your spirit go / I just don’t get it,” he sings on the chorus.

Laroi revealed this past Wednesday (April 19) that he was planning to release the song, despite initially planning to keep it for himself.

“this wasn’t in the release plans but I played it this weekend at coachella and I just felt like the time was right for some reason,” he said in the post’s caption. “this one means a lot to me. it’s super personal. it’s a song about loss, grieving and dealing with the thoughts and emotions that come with that. I pray for all of you who are going through something similar currently and I hope this helps you feel a little less alone in all of it. I love you guys, and thanks for everything.”
