Woman’s heart-stopping experience at hotel reminds everyone to lock the latch behind them

If you’ve ever stayed in a hotel, you know there’s an additional lock you can latch as an added layer of protection. But sometimes weird things happen that make us rethink the comfort and security many of us take for granted. TikTok user TayBeepBoop had a disturbing experience when a hotel front desk person attempted to enter her room while she was inside. Some readers may find the story to be unsettling but it’s a powerful reminder of exactly why situational awareness and caution are so important in today’s world.

Tay, obviously frightened, uploaded clips from the event on her TikTok page, which has since garnered 6 million views. In the video, which is mostly the floor, door and bed, you can hear the man outside of her room knocking loudly asking to be let inside.

Tay asks the man repeatedly why he attempted to walk into her room using the hotel key to which the man explains there’s a problem with the woman’s car. There’s only one problem. Tay doesn’t own a car and is only in town on business where she did not rent a car to get around town, relying only on other modes of transportation. So, what the heck was the man doing at her door?

@taybeepboop

Replying to @dani klarić this was a really long and hard video to make, it was sort of traumatizing and I’m kind of freaked out about staying anywhere now and I dont leave my house much anymore tbh because I already was dealing with PTSD about my safety. I’m OKAY which is why im able to go through this footage now. I genuinely don’t want anything to do with this hotel, this is a PSA to stay safe and cautious. I don’t want people to go after this worker because I still don’t know what his intentions were and he could have just been trying to do his job

Tay was staying at the hotel alone and made sure to latch the additional lock on her hotel room door, which is the only thing that prevented this hotel staff member from getting into her room. Since the situation was so scary and went on for quite some time according to her video, she called friends on FaceTime to be a witness and help comfort her. Eventually the man leaves after repeated attempts to get the scared woman to open the door and Tay was able to get a male business partner to escort her safely to another hotel.

But the comments were filled with stories from women who have had similar experiences. Many people explained the danger of admitting you’re alone upon check-in, while other commenters sympathized with the woman not thinking to call the police right away. With people traveling more as COVID-19 restrictions subside, there could be a greater chance for things like this happening so it’s best to be prepared and err on the side of caution when traveling alone.

Women on the Road has several tips for hotel safety including making sure your door lock works, putting a chair under the handle of the door or buying a rubber door stop. The site also highlights the importance of locking your windows if they open and not opening the door for people you don’t know.

Another site geared towards safety is Solo Female Traveler and it recommends getting a floor higher in the hotel to make it more of a hassle for someone from outside to break in. It, too, reiterates the importance of locking the additional lock in the hotel room while you’re inside.

While it’s statistically unlikely you’ll be a victim of a hotel robbery or whatever was happening with Tay, her experience is a reminder to research hotels and practice caution when traveling. Always, always, lock the deadbolt or chain.

15 nightmare situations, according to introverts

The concept of being an introvert versus an extrovert is a fairly new one. Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung first came up with both terms in the early 1900s, and from the get-go, it was understood that people’s personalities generally fell somewhere between the two extremes.

Nowadays introverts are often mislabeled as being antisocial, which isn’t necessarily true. Going off of the Jung definition, introverted people simply orient toward their “internal private world of inner thoughts and feelings”—unlike extroverts, who “engage more with the outside world of objects, sensory perception, and action.”

Most introverts will tell you, it’s not that we hate people. We just find them … draining. What we tend to detest are things like trivial small talk and the cacophony of large groups. But even that, many introverts can turn on for, enjoy even … so long as we can promptly go home afterwards and veg out.

Being introverted is certainly not unique—up to half of the entire population is estimated to be introverted. Heck, it’s even a trait for animals. And it’s certainly not a weakness. Many notable leaders were known for being reserved. However, the world is often made to favor extroversion, making it hard for introverts to be understood, let alone valued.

Reddit user Sarayka81 asked for introverts to share their “nightmare situations.” The answers are an eye-opening (and pretty hilarious) glimpse into how one person’s idea of normal, or even fun, can be another person’s torture.

Enjoy 15 of the best responses. Introverts, beware.

1. Public marriage proposals

I’ve told every partner so far, if you propose in public I will turn it down.” – @AngelaTheRipper

All those youtube videos of these big proposals, like a whole dance routine pop up…everyone is like ‘omg what a great gesture!’ No. no. no.” – fearme101

2. Afterparties

“You mean there’s more stuff to do after the stuff we planned on doing? I only have so much energy to deal with people and it was already used up.” – @Nyctomancer

3. Being picked out of the crowd to speak

“People who just raise their hand to be chosen are true heroes.” – @Chogolatine

4. Unexpected visitors

As a child my worst nightmare was when my parents got visitors and I’m stuck upstairs hungry and thirsty because I can’t access the kitchen.” – @mikasott

Ask them nicely, ‘would you kindly REMOVE yourself from my personal space.‘” – @GDog507

But that requires talking to them.” – @StinkyKittyBreath

5. Introducing yourself

I get locked jaw when this happens. Along with sweaty palms and cold sweat.” – @ellisonjune

6. Multiple conversations at once

“I was at a conference where everyone is doing the circle thing and I was chatting with some people about some interesting, but pretty dry, industry topics. All of the sudden I hear someone in another conversation circle say something along the lines of: ‘Yeah man, gorillas will rip your head off.’

All of the sudden, I can’t concentrate on my current conversation and my brain tunes into the gorilla conversation instead. I could not for the life of me tune back into my main conversation.” – @reAchilles

7. Running into someone you know in a public place

All you want to do is read your book, but there’s no way out and you decide to put up a brave front. Already you can hear the office gossip in your head: ‘Oh my God, guess who I was stuck on the train with…’Nightmare fuel. Work from home was a blessing in this regard.” – @jew_bisquits

8. Singing “Happy Birthday” at a restaurant

This shouldn’t be legal” – @Chogolatine

9. Surprise parties

I’m essentially the 49th wheel at my own party. Kill me now.” – @Anneboleyn33

10. Being talked over

Especially when the only thing the person interjects with is filler or exclamatory flurry that adds nothing to the conversation while stifling any other contribution. Things like ‘yes girl yes!’ or ‘I can’t believe that!’ or …even loud forced laughter – really any noise interjected in that space to make it seem like they’re contributing or listening instead of actually participating.” – @torn_anteater

11. Networking events

“Don’t forget to come up with a fun fact!” – @sub_surfer

12. Extroverts who just don’t get it

14. Impromptu work presentations

I need like a couple days to prepare myself for any speaking engagement lol.” – @koriroo

15. Party games that involve small talk

“‘Who’s up for two truths and a lie?’

Thinks … Can they all be lies? No … What are the most boring truths I can think of so no one comes up to talk to me after this?‘” – @littlewittlediddle

Doctor’s alcohol tip that ‘could save your life’ goes viral on TikTok

New Year’s Eve is often a night filled with celebratory shots and champagne toasts. But as the party night fast approaches, one doctor is gently reminding folks the importance of partying responsibly during the holidays. Really, it’s a piece of advice that’s important all year long.

Dr. Brian Hoeflinger, an Ohio based neurosurgeon with over two decades of experience, has a TikTok channel filled with educational videos and lifestyle tips. But it’s his latest clip explaining just how long it takes our bodies to break down alcohol that has gone viral.

In the video, which was shared on Christmas Day, Dr. Hoeflinger sets the scene of a party where “a lot of drinks are going down” by setting up a bunch of shot glasses filled with water.

“Say you’re having five drinks in the first hour,” he says, taking five fake, water-filled shots. “As you’re taking them, that alcohol is building up in your system fast. [It] goes to your brain within five minutes and starts to affect you.”

The same can’t be said for other parts of the body. As Dr. Hoeflinger noted, “your liver only metabolizes one ounce of alcohol per hour.” And according to Northwestern Medicine, that process only begins 20 minutes after consumption.

Hoflinger continues, “I’ve got five ounces of liquor in my system right now, and at the end of the hour I’m only going to burn off an ounce…so I’m going to have [four] ounces left in my bloodstream.”

@doctorhoeflinger Knowing this about drinking could save your life! #fyp #party #drinking #alcohol #foryou #holiday #christmas ♬ Storytelling – Adriel

Of course, there are different factors—such as body mass, hormones, medications, etc.—that affect someone’s rate of absorption. And yes, we might be able to form a functional tolerance where behaviorally, we show no signs of intoxication. However, even with all these variables, for the most part all bodies are affected by alcohol similarly. In other words, your blood alcohol level will be more or less the same, and the risks will remain even if you don’t “feel drunk.”

Hoeflinger continues, saying “the party’s rockin’, so we’re gonna have some more,” while taking three more shots and reminding viewers that he still has only burned off one ounce of liquor during the hour that’s passed.

Now he’s had a total of eight ounces of alcohol in two hours. He’s burned off two, but still has six ounces left in his system—meaning that in this scenario, it will take another six hours to completely burn off.

In hour three, Hoefligner takes one shot since the party is “winding down.” This brings him up to a total of nine ounces of alcohol over three hours. His liver has metabolized three ounces, leaving him (still) with six ounces of liquor left in his bloodstream.

“You’re going to be drunk well into the wee hours of the morning, it doesn’t wear off,” he warns, noting the common misconception people have that “they stop drinking an hour or two and can hop in the car and drive.” But in reality, “you can’t do that as you’re still drunk five, six hours down,” he explains.

Dr. Hoeflinger concludes his video by saying:

“For this holiday season the whole point is I really want to tell people that’s how alcohol can stack up in your system easily when you’re drunk and you won’t know it and it won’t wear off for hours and hours down the road.” This is followed by an urge for people to take an Uber or Lyft home to avoid potentially taking their own or another’s life.

The informative clip, which has been viewed over 13 million times, received a flood of praise from viewers online, especially from parents with kids of a drinking age.

“This is the first time I have ever had anyone explain this in this way. I am forwarding this to my son,” wrote one parent.

It also resonated among designated drivers. One person commented “thank you for caring and educating. I’m the sober ride. I’ve seen the devastation from drinking and driving.”

The topic hits Dr. Hoeflinger on a personal level as well. In a previous video, he shared that he lost his 18-year old son, who died nearly a decade ago from drunk driving. Coming from a medical professional, the plea to not drink and drive is important to hear. But as a parent, it hits different. As he shared in the clip, “losing somebody you love is one of the worst experiences you can have in your life.”

Though Hoeflinger focused on the effect of liquor in his party example, the principle applies to wine and beer as well. Healthline recommends only having one large glass of wine every three hours, and one pint of beer every two hours.

It also gives some best practices to avoid intoxication, including:

  • Eat at least 1 hour before drinking.
  • Sip your drinks slowly.
  • Avoid shots, which you’re likely to down rather than sip.
  • Don’t drink more than one standard drink per hour.
  • Alternate between alcohol and nonalcoholic drinks, preferably water.
  • Limit or avoid carbonated drinks, like champagne, sparkling wine, and cocktails mixed with soda.
  • Sit down when drinking, since doing it while standing tends to make people drink faster.

And of course, don’t be afraid to get another ride home. This New Year’s Eve (and beyond), feel free to kick back and have fun. But let’s look out for one another by doing it safely.

The Jonas Brothers, Courtney Love, And More Musicians Make Their Personalized ‘Barbie’ Viral Posters

Barbie fever has been sweeping the globe, as the trailer for Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film about the beloved doll dropped earlier this week. The classic character is being played by Margot Robbie, with Ryan Gosling as Ken. However, several other actors and musicians play various iterations of the dolls, including Dua Lipa as Mermaid Barbie.

Alongside the trailer for the summer blockbuster, a make-your-own Barbie poster link went viral, with social media users adding both their own selfies and ones of celebrities to create new colorful graphics.

Given Barbie‘s reach, musicians got in on the trend, too, with Courtney Love being one of many to make a poster. “Uhhh no! But I think Greta Gerwig sly genius plot is going to make you rethink the whole Barbie narrative and.. still be FUN!” Love captioned. Her tagline read, “Barbie is NOT your friend.”

“(Also, I loathe Barbie/ Britney pink, that’s why I changed the Hole font. Stupid, but I’m an aesthete what can I say),” she added.

The Jonas Brothers also joined the trend, with Joe making his own poster to promote their recent song, “Waffle House.” Kevin did one, too, captioning his, “This Barbie… gets vacation eyes because you’re looking summertime fine.” Nick opted for “This Barbie…wants to Celebrate! while he’s got time.”

Continue scrolling to see some other musicians (or their account runners) who’ve made their own personalized Barbie posters.

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Is Smashing Box Office Records, With A Bigger Global Opening Than Even ‘Frozen 2’

People weren’t initially all that keen about The Super Mario Bros. Movie. When it was announced the Minnesota-born Chris Pratt would be playing one of the Italian leads, many balked. There wasn’t much enthusiasm for his voice when they first heard it either. But online furor didn’t damage its box office. Quite the opposite.

As per Deadline, the second attempt to turn Nintendo’s biggest cash cow into a big screen motion picture worked, and how. It opened on Wednesday and it’s on track for a stunning $195.3 million domestic 5-day weekend. That’s a bit less than the five-day record-holder, namely Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which hauled in $200 million over the same stretch.

The record it did break is the one for the biggest opening for an animated film, at least globally. Mario is predicted to gross $368 million worldwide, which is more than even the five-day gross for Frozen 2, which Hoovered up $358 million back in 2019.

Deadline rounds up some more records Mario broke:

–Biggest global opening and 3-day domestic to date for 2023 outstripping Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($225.3M, $106.1M).

–Biggest opening ever for Illumination, besting Minions‘ 3-day of $115.7M and Despicable Me 2‘s 5-day of $143M.

–Second biggest opening ever for an animated film after Incredibles 2 ($182.6M)

So congrats to the Mario Bros. team, which managed to pull off a Mulligan, atoning for the disastrous first attempt back in 1993.

Halsey Encountered A ‘Good Luck’ Spider During Her ‘Maxxxine’ Audition That Helped Them Manifest A Part

Earlier this week, Halsey was officially announced as part of the cast for Ti West’s upcoming film, Maxxxine — a continuation of the universe featured in his movies X and Pearl. Now the pop star has opened up about their audition and casting process during her For The Record radio show.

In a true fated story, Halsey spills about discovering a spider that she feels was a sign, working out in their favor for good luck.

“So I went in and I auditioned just like anybody else. And I was in the audition room with the casting agent, and all of a sudden everybody kind of started freaking out a little bit because there was a spider in the room,” Halsey said. “And so I walked over and pick the spider up by its leg and put it in my hand and just took it out the door of the audition room and through the casting agency and out to the front and put it in a bush and then I walked back and everybody was kind of like, ‘Okay, you’re a freak.’”

“But I told them, as some you guys might know, I’m a witch and spiders are good luck, having a spider in the room is good luck, and I told them, this is a great sign for me,” they added. “I’m actually really happy about it because it’s good luck for me. And then it turns out he was, because I ended up getting the part and I was so exited about it. So I have to thank my little spider familiar friend because he did a little extra manifesting to help me get it.”

Because of this, Halsey also shared that they’ve considered getting a tattoo in honor of the little creature that helped her land the role.

An Ex-Trump Crony Thinks He’s Going To ‘Fake An Illness’ So He Doesn’t Have To Run In 2024

The 2024 election is a good year-and-a-half away but it’s already heated up. There are already a few candidates, mostly on the Republican side. One is a former commander-in-chief who’s been recently indicted on criminal charges and likes to spend his time trashing a guy who isn’t even formally in the race yet. In other words it’s not going so well. And one of Trump’s former cronies doesn’t think he’ll even go all the way.

As per Mediaite, Anthony Scaramucci — the financier who famously spent a thrilling 10 days as Trump’s communications director in the summer of 2017 — went on CNN to throw some cold water on his old boss’ political ambitions. He postulated that there are two things that will throw his third campaign off-balance: his legal woes and certain close family members ditching him this time.

“They want nothing to do with this campaign, Anderson,” said the Mooch. “And they were conspicuously absent from the courtroom. So, I think he’s gonna have a hard time. He may not even make it to the Iowa Caucuses – not because of anything other than the combination of the lawsuits and the family’s absence.”

It’s true that Trump was alone when he was arraigned last week, although both Jr. and Eric have continued acting as their father’s bulldogs. Ivanka, however, is done shilling for her dad.

However, the idea that Trump would actually drop out of the race shocked anchor Anderson Cooper, who asked Scaramucci point blank if he thinks that’s true.

“Well, he would fake an illness or something like that,” he replied. “He would come up with a very clever excuse, but, but–I don’t even–listen, you get hit with two more lawsuits like this, maybe another arrest and arraignment in Georgia and your family’s nowhere to be seen and you’re somebody like Donald Trump, it’s possible. You can’t rule it out.”

Of course, people in 2016 didn’t think Trump would go all the way, that he’d drop out once he realized he’d actually get the most powerful job in the world. And then look what happened. In other words, when it comes to the big guy, don’t rule out the worst case scenario.

Report: ‘Fear Exists’ That Luka Doncic Could Request A Trade ‘As Soon As The Summer Of 2024’

The case can be made that the most disappointing team in the NBA this season was the Dallas Mavericks. After making it to the Western Conference Finals last postseason, Dallas ended up missing out on the playoffs altogether this year, as the team’s fate was sealed on Friday night with a 115-112 loss to the Chicago Bulls that officially eliminated them from play-in contention with a 38-43 record.

A number of important players did not play for the Mavs on Friday, while Luka Doncic played the first quarter and the opening possession of the second before getting shut down. There was a method to the madness — the team’s pick in the 2023 NBA Draft is top-10 protected, and missing the play-in means the overwhelming likelihood is they get the 10th pick in June — but the mere fact that the season even got to that point is shocking, especially considering the high-profile the team made when it was 28-26 to acquire Kyrie Irving.

And now, rumors are beginning to pop up about Doncic’s long-term future in Dallas. Despite being in the first year of a 5-year contract extension, Tim MacMahon of ESPN reports that there are real worries among the Mavericks that their MVP candidate could want out as soon as next summer if things do not start getting better.

There’s a strong sense of urgency within the organization to expedite the process before Doncic loses faith in the Mavs’ ability to build a contender around him. He’s wrapping up the first season of a five-year, $215 million supermax contract with a player option for the final season.

Team sources have acknowledged to ESPN that fear exists that Doncic, who publicly and privately expressed extreme frustration this season, could consider requesting a trade as soon as the summer of 2024 if Dallas doesn’t make significant progress by then.

Doncic is currently under contract through 2026-27, although the final year on his deal includes a player option. As MacMahon noted, Doncic previously summed up this year as “a very disappointing season.”

Metallica Will Be Bringing The Electricity Of ’72 Seasons’ To ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ For A Takeover Week

Metallica are just days away from dropping their new 72 Seasons album — and they have some surprises in store for fans. Not only are they having a global premiere in theaters, but the band will also takeover Jimmy Kimmel Live! for a special Metallica week. They shared the special news on social media, noting that they’ll be playing jams for Jimmy and his audience each night.

“In a first for the Jimmy Kimmel Live! show, it’s ‘Metallica Week,’ as we will be the musical guest each night, beginning on Monday, April 10, through Thursday, April 13,” they wrote on Twitter.

“We’ll be playing live for all four shows, and you’ll also catch us on the couch, chatting with Jimmy one night. Keep your eyes peeled for other sightings during the broadcast, as we really don’t know what else Jimmy will get us involved in!” they also added, according to NME.

The band has worked with Kimmel on projects in the past, as the publication noted that he was the host of the Helping Hands charity concert — where Metallica had performed “Nothing Else Matters” with St. Vincent last December. The event was streamed on Paramount+ and was “dedicated to creating sustainable communities by supporting workforce education, the fight against hunger, and other critical local services.”

72 Seasons is out 4/14 via Blackened Recordings. Find more information here.
