Alabama community rallies around author after school district cancels Black History Month event

There’s something special about having a book read to you by the actual author. It means a lot to adults, so one can only imagine how children feel when they find out that the person preparing to read them a story is the person who wrote it. It’s a small piece of childhood magic that never really goes away.

That’s exactly the treat that several classrooms were primed to get when award-winning children’s book author Derrick Barnes was scheduled to read to students at three schools in the Hoover City Schools public school district near Birmingham, Alabama. It’s an event that was inquired about back in April 2022, nearly a full year in advance to ensure the author would be available for February. But just days before the start of Black History Month, the superintendent of Hoover City Schools abruptly canceled the scheduled readings.

The cancellation came as a surprise to Barnes, his team, as well as the parents and teachers within Hoover City Schools. The superintendent of the school district, Dee Fowler, cited one parent’s concerns about the visits and the author’s “controversial ideas.” Fowler also stated there were contract issues, according to CNN.

No matter the reason, Barnes would not be reading at the schools, which not only affects the children but also leaves the author out thousands of dollars. But the Alabama community decided they were not going to allow this situation to stand and chose to do something about it any way they could. Hundreds of frustrated parents have worked together to raise a portion of the $9,900 Barnes lost by the event being canceled on such short notice, and they didn’t stop there.

People in the town are stocking his book in the Free Little Libraries, which are small bookcases placed throughout towns and free for the public to use. Two teachers, Kent Haines and Reed Lochlamy, wrote a letter to the school district and 140 teachers from Hoover City Schools signed on as of February 3. According to WBRC, the teachers are asking for more transparency about the situation and how to avoid it in the future.

The award-winning author writes children’s books that feature Black children doing normal daily activities and encourages positive self-image. These are books that Black children can see representation in and other children can see something other than Black people experiencing trauma or some other situation that needs to be overcome. Most of his writings center joy, and it would’ve been a joy for kids to see that reflected.

“I really try to focus on writing books where Black children are doing ‘slice of life’ things,” Barnes explained to CBS 42 News. “When I first got into the industry, all the books that were written by Black authors that got awards were always about civil rights or slavery. No bedtime stories. No stories about going to school.”

“How many teachers want those students to be able to have that opportunity to see themselves reflected in the people that we bring in?” Haines asked WBRC before continuing, “More broadly, I am hoping that this leads our district to more fully enact its stated values regarding the diverse community that we live and teach in.”

The cancellation of authors speaking at elementary schools seems to be the latest trend seemingly stemming from the small faction of outspoken organizations that want to ban books in schools. Reasons for banning particular books span from “inappropriate” to Critical Race Theory, which is a graduate-level course taught to law students.

Throughout the process, it has not been clear what the exact offending material was that was posted to Barnes’ social media page that started the cancellation. But the support shown is reason enough for the school district to reconsider hastily deciding things based on one person’s dissent.

When asked about the support received by the teachers, Barnes told WBRC, “I look forward to finally coming down there hopefully this upcoming school year and I just want to tell all of them thank you, love them very much and keep up the fight.”

Experienced 747 pilot reveals the worst time of day for anxious people to fly

It’s normal to get a little nervous before boarding an airplane. Hurtling through the air at 600 miles per hour, 30,000 feet off the ground isn’t a natural human experience. According to Stratos Jet Charters, up to 40% of all people experience some anxiety when it comes to flying.

The good news is that they have little reason to be afraid. Only one in 20 million flights result in a passenger’s death. Whereas the average American’s lifetime odds of dying in a car crash are 1 in 101.

I think that solves the “Should we fly or drive?” debate.

But if you still are more afraid of traveling on a plane than the ride in a taxi to the airport, here’s something to ease your mind. If you want to avoid turbulence, book a flight in the morning. “The heating of the ground later causes bumpier air, and it’s much more likely to thunderstorm in the afternoon,” Jerry Johnson, a pilot from Los Angeles, told Reader’s Digest.

If you experience turbulence, there’s no need to worry; planes are designed to handle changes in air currents. The only time to be concerned about turbulence is if you’re standing on the plane and could fall while walking back to your seat or waiting in line for the bathroom.

Travelers looking for the smoothest place to sit on a plane should choose a seat near a wing. “The bumpiest place to sit is in the back. A plane is like a seesaw. If you’re in the middle, you don’t move as much,” pilot Patrick Smith told Reader’s Digest.

On the ultra-rare occasion of a plane crash, the safest spot to sit is the emergency exit. “Always offer to sit by the emergency exits because—as long as you’re able-bodied—I think probably the best seats are the ones closest to the exits,” 747 pilot Nick Eades told LADbible.

“Then if there is an abandoned take-off [or] there is catastrophic failure, you can either help people out or be the first to get out of the airplane yourself. You’re in a very good position,” Eades continued. “It’s common sense, if you think about it.”

If the anxiety you feel around flying has more to do with cost than personal safety, a scientific study found that prices are usually at their lowest three weeks to two months before a flight, with average prices hitting rock bottom 44 days before departure.

“Prices will be lowest three to six weeks before your trip, rising rapidly in the last three weeks before departure date,” deal-finding site Hopper told Forbes.

But if you’re going to book your flight outside of that window, sooner is a lot worse than farther out. “Travelers who wait to book their flights within three weeks of travel dates can risk paying double, or even triple the amount,” CheapAir.com wrote in its Annual Flight Report. “If you have an emergency or unexpected trip, you’ll likely pay about $150 more than you would if you shopped in the prime booking window.”

Melanie Lynskey has perfect response after being told her body didn’t fit her ‘The Last Of Us’ role

In HBO’s “The Last of Us,” actress Melanie Lynskey plays Kathleen—a tough, formidable villain and ruthless leader of a rebel alliance, not to mention apocalypse survivor.

Do these attributes require any particular sort of body type? Common sense screams no. And yet, outdated views dictate that the answer must be yes.

Case in point: former “America’s Top Model” winner Adrianne Curry recently criticized the legitimacy of Lynskey for the role solely because of her naturally soft body frame, implying that only someone toned and athletic could pull it off.

Referencing a photo of Lynskey in a dress for InStyle Magazine, Curry tweeted, “her body says life of luxury…not post apocolyptic [sic] warlord. where is linda hamilton when you need her?”

Lynskey, who is no stranger to standing up to body critics, had some choice words to say in response.

“Firstly- this is a photo from my cover shoot for InStyle magazine, not a still from HBO’s The Last Of Us,” Lynskey wrote. “And I’m playing a person who meticulously planned & executed an overthrow of FEDRA. I am supposed to be SMART, ma’am. I don’t need to be muscly. That’s what henchmen are for.”

It’s a plague that’s been on the strong female lead since breaking away from the role of victim or the wife—this notion that she has to possess qualities we typically find exemplary in men, be it with a hardened gym body, untouchable toughness, or a solid, singular focus. And this bias in fiction spills over into the real world. As Lynksey noted in a follow-up post, “Women, and especially women in leadership positions, are scrutinized incessantly. Her voice is too shrill. Her voice is too quiet. She pays too much attention to how she looks. She doesn’t pay enough attention to how she looks. She’s too angry. She’s not angry enough.'”

But Lynskey wants to dismantle all that. The actress wrote that she felt it was important to portray Kathleen as “feminine, and soft-voiced, and all the things that we’ve been told are ‘weak,’” adding that what made her casting “exciting” was that it imagined “a future in which people start listening to the person with the best ideas. Not the coolest or the toughest person…The person who is doing the planning…The one who’s decisive.”

From being constantly reminded since the age of 17 to be “thin, confident and pretty” to having a crew member suggest a personal trainer for her acclaimed role on “Yellowjackets,” Lynskey has constantly had to address unsolicited comments about her shape. And while that is exhausting to think about, she feels that, other than the acting itself, “the most exciting part of my job is subverting expectations.”

Goes to show that Lynskey knows exactly how to be tough, whether fending off zombies or out-of-touch comments on social media.

Drake Reportedly Must Appear For A Deposition In The XXXTentacion Murder Trial

Drake reportedly must appear for a deposition or appear in court in the XXXTentacion murder trial.

Today (February 9) Rolling Stone obtained a court order filed by the defense attorney for Dedrick Williams, one of the three suspects. Attorney Mauricio Padilla reportedly submitted a possible alternative theory linking Drake to the murder of XXXTentacion, due to their rumored feud before XXXTentacion’s death.

The publication states that Padilla attempted to subpoena Drake last month, noting that Drake was served properly, however, didn’t show up for a deposition.

According to the court order, Drake must show up for deposition on Friday, February 24.

“If deponent Aubrey Drake Graham does not appear to deposition he must appear before this court on Monday, Feb. 27, 2023 at 10 a.m. EST at so [sic] the court can determine why he should not be held in contempt.”

During opening arguments that took place on Tuesday, February 7, Padilla cited an Instagram post shared from XXXTentacion’s Instagram account in February 2018.

“If anyone tries to kill me it was @champagnepapi [Drake’s Instagram handle]. I’m snitching right now,” read the Instagram post, which XXXTentacion later deleted and claimed was posted as his account was hacked.

At the time of writing, no actual evidence against Drake has been presented in court, however, Padilla has reportedly tried to subpoena several other artists, including Offset, Quavo, and 6ix9ine.

We Were One Phone Call Away From John Leguizamo Playing The Vulture In ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

It’s a good thing that there are an infinite number of alternative universes, because at least in a few of them, John Leguizamo played The Vulture/Adrian Toomes in Spider-Man: Homecoming. As we all know, the role went to Michael Keaton who brought his Batman legacy to the winged “bad” guy facing off against Peter Parker. This was also a few years after Birdman, the Oscar-winning film where Keaton also played a winged superhero, so all of that was swirling in the ether of Homecoming, connecting it to superhero history and a kind of craggy, weathered prestige. Make no mistake: Keaton was excellent in the role and played it only as he could.

But it was almost Leguizamo. Maybe even more than almost. According to the actor in an interview for ComicBook.com, he and Marvel were in final negotiations when Keaton decided he wanted the role after all, and the producers had an awkward question for Leguizamo.

“They asked me if I would give it up and I said, ‘Well, okay I guess,’” Leguizamo said. “‘[Marvel]said, no, we’ll work with you again, we’re gonna!’”

So far, that hasn’t come to pass. And why not?

“They offered me something tiny, and I’m going, ‘Nuh-uh!’” Leguizamo concluded.

It’s a heartbreaking story of what might have been. Granted, these moves are common negotiating tactics for both actors and studios, but it’s a shame Leguizamo was on the losing end on this one, especially because he would have cruuuussshed the role.

What Is An EGOT And What Does It Stand For?

Viola Davis recently became the 18th member to join the honorary EGOT club after she won a Grammy last weekend for the audiobook version of her memoir. However, some casual fans might be curious: What exactly is an EGOT?

First things first, the EGOT stands for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. For somebody to ‘EGOT,’ it means that person has to win (at least one) of each of those four awards. And it’s very difficult to do, but there are a ton of celebrities currently that are only one award shy of joining Davis.

There are also other special honors in the entertainment world. In addition to the EGOT, there is the ESOT — which swaps out someone not needing to win a Grammy but a Screen Actors Guild Award instead.

In this category, there are only ten winners so far. Davis is already one of them, as she achieved her ESOT in 2017.

Lastly, there is the prestigious PEGOT, which means all of the former EGOT winners would have had to win either a Peabody award or a Pulitzer.

There are only five people that have done so: Barbra Streisand, Mike Nichols, Rita Moreno (Peabody winners), Richard Rodgers, and Marvin Hamlisch (Pulitzer winners).

Paul Rudd Was Star Struck By His ‘Only Murders In The Building’ Co-Stars: ‘Surreal Doesn’t Even Cover It’

Celebrities! They’re just like us!

Paul Rudd had the same reaction we’d all have if we got a chance to speak to Martin Short, Steve Martin, or Meryl Streep — let alone all three. Let alone acting alongside them. Rudd may be a superhero, but that trio are royalty.

“Surreal doesn’t even cover it,” Rudd told Entertainment Weekly. “For a comedy fan like myself, Martin Short and Steve Martin, that’s Mount Rushmore. I mean, truly hero worship. To get to work with them, I still kind of can’t believe it. Selena [Gomez], I adore. I’ve worked with her a couple of times and she’s the greatest. And then when I heard Meryl Streep was on board, it just didn’t seem real. It still doesn’t seem real.”

Ant-Man popped up in the final episode of Only Murders in the Building season 2 following a time jump and launching the season 3 mystery of where he bought that awesome trench coat (and also who killed him). Naturally, we’ll get to learn a bit more of who his character (stage actor Ben Glenroy) really is, how he’s mixed up with the Arconia 3 outside of starring in their Broadway play.

So what’s it like working with Short and Martin? “It’s just constant insults,” Rudd said. “To just hear them knock each other but there’s so much love between those guys … it’s just so fun to have a front-row seat to all of that.”

The Quantum Realm’s got nothing on that.

‘You’ Super Fan Cardi B Celebrated The Show’s New Season With The Return Of Her Hilarious Profile Pic

Everybody’s talking about the new season of Netflix original series, You. One of the show’s biggest fans is rapper Cardi B.

Today, the “Up” hitmaker changed her Twitter avatar back to a picture of Penn Badgley’s character, Joe Goldberg, on the heels of the show’s fourth season.

The show’s official Twitter account caught wind of the photo change and replied to her saying, “Back in her Goldberg era.”

This isn’t the first time Cardi has expressed her fandom over You either. In 2021, for the show’s third season, she switched her profile pic to Joe peeping out the window — and Badgley followed suit by switching his to the Bronx rapper. She also received a PR package with blue baseball cap, matching that of character Joe, with text reading “HELLO, YOU…”

A month earlier, Badgley appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where he lauded Cardi’s social media savvy. Cardi later shared a clip from the episode, expressing her elation, saying, “OOOOMMFFFGGGGGG HE KNOWS ME!!!”

Netflix then changed their Twitter bio to read “Petition to get Cardi B to guest star in Season 4 of You!,” which prompted the rapper to pitch an idea for the episode.

“So it’s episode 1 and I’m at Paris Fashion week shutting it down! I turn around and there stands YOU,” she said.

Perhaps a cameo may manifest in the near future.

Season 4, Part 1 of You is now streaming on Netflix. Part 2 is set to premiere on Wednesday, March 9.

Cardi B is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Rina Sawayama Is Giving A Headlining Performance At Elton John’s Oscars Viewing Party Next Month

Rina Sawayama is set to perform at Elton John’s AIDS Foundation Oscars Party next month after confirming the news on social media. Eric McCormack and MJ Rodriguez are also set to appear at John’s popular viewing party on March 12.

“Founded by my wonderful friend @eltonofficial, they’re on an incredibly important mission to end HIV stigma and inequalities around the world, and to spread more love and compassion,” Sawayama tweeted.

“I am overjoyed to be reuniting with old and new friends on one of my favorite nights of the year, especially after missing last year’s viewing party due to an unfortunate clash of schedules with my ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ tour,” John shared in a statement via Rolling Stone. “As always, I am so appreciative of every attendee, donor and sponsor who continues to support the Foundation’s work across the globe in the fight to end AIDS. With such meaningful generosity, we can make a healthier and more inclusive world.”

Sawayama and John have been close friends for quite a while. Between collabing on a version of her song “Chosen Family” and speaking highly of each other in past interviews, her performance announcement is just another step.

“Elton doesn’t realize how many people’s lives he’s made by contacting them and telling them that their work is great, that the work is seen,” she told the New York Times in their 2021 joint interview.
