The Raiders Will Bench Derek Carr And Start Jarrett Stidham

The Las Vegas Raiders are making a change under center. According to head coach Josh McDaniels, the team has decided to bench longtime starting quarterback Derek Carr and promote Jarrett Stidham for the remainder of the 2022 NFL season. McDaniels told the press on Wednesday that the plan is to “evaluate a younger player.”

“We’re gonna go ahead and start Jarrett the last couple games of the season here,” McDaniels said. “None of us is happy with where we’re at, but we think it’s an opportunity to evaluate a younger player who hasn’t had much time to play. Talking to Derek, who was great, he understands the scenario that we’re in and the situation, and very supportive of the two young guys. Those three guys obviously have worked together, hand-in-hand, all year, and he’ll do anything he can to help them.”

While the Raiders are not officially eliminated from the postseason, the team needs a miracle, as they sit at 6-9 with two games left in the season. Las Vegas will close out the year with home games against the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs.

Despite noting that this is an opportunity to evaluate Stidham — who, it must be noted, spent the first three years of his NFL career in New England with McDaniels as his offensive coordinator — there is a major financial incentive for the Raiders to keep Carr healthy for the remainder of the year.

Carr has completed 60.8 percent of his pass attempts this season for 3,522 yards with 24 touchdowns and an NFL-high 14 interceptions. Stidham has thrown 61 passes in his NFL career, with 13 of them coming this season as a member of the Raiders.

Shawn Mendes’ Very Canadian Christmas Included Taking An Underwear-Only Dip In A Freezing River

Shawn Mendes celebrated the Christmas holiday in typical Canadian fashion. Or, rather, by wearing nearly nothing at all. The pop star decided to take the polar plunge challenge by swimming in a freezing river in nothing but his underwear.

Originally, he was wearing a sweater and some boots but winds up getting undressed for the dip. His friends, who were filming, also show the water, which is covered in snow and frozen ice.

Mendes climbs into the water with one of the friends before proceeding to dunk himself in the water. “It’s cold!” he said in the video — as if it wasn’t expected for a Northern December.

Still, he dunks himself a few more times. Mendes then seems to chicken out as he exits the river before his friend and puts back on his clothes. At the end of the video, he gives one last enthusiastic thumbs up to the camera.

“I can’t feel a thing,” Mendes added.

After posting the video to Instagram, Mendes’ fans and friends had a lot of thoughts.

“BLUE BALLS. LITERALLY,” producer Ryan Tedder commented. Meanwhile, Sabrina Carpenter jokingly asked, “was it cold tho.”

Twitter had some jokes, too. “he really went into cold water then said ‘its so cold’ like duh boy what did you expect,” one fan replied about the video.

Continue scrolling for some additional reactions to Shawn Mendes’ polar plunge in his underwear.

Terrell Owens, Who Is 49, Is Apparently In ‘Constant Communication With Jerry Jones’ Office’ About Returning To The Cowboys

According to an interview that his agent gave to CowboysSI.com, Hall of Fame inductee Terrell Owens has spent time in recent days talking to the Dallas Cowboys about a potential return to the team. To be clear, the potential return would mean the 49-year-old wide receiver comes out of retirement and suits up for the Cowboys again.

“We’ve been in constant communication with Jerry Jones’ office over the last few days about the possibility of him returning to the Cowboys,” Owens’ agent, Gregory D.L. Daniel, told CowboysSI.com. “Terrell is ready to contribute and play any role, big or small. He’s in outstanding shape. He looks no different than he did years ago. I watched him running routes full-speed with DeSean and he looked great. He didn’t drop a pass.

“He most recently ran a 4.5 40-yard dash, which was his warm-up. He’s a legend. We want to make history and see him break these records. If anybody can do it, it’s him. His three Ds are desire, dedication and discipline. He embodies that every day, even running hills at 3 a.m. on Christmas morning.”

Owens, who played for the Cowboys from 2006-08, has been open about his desire to return to playing football. Within the last year, Owens played for the FCF Zappers in Fan Controlled Football before getting traded to the Knights of Degen. He appeared on a Houston television statement earlier this month and expressed that he is serious about making a push for an NFL return and called himself a “viable options” for teams in third down and red zone situations.

Owens last appeared in the NFL in 2010 with the Cincinnati Bengals. He signed a deal with the Seattle Seahawks in 2012, but was released before he could appear in a game. The Cowboys have been linked to free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. throughout the 2022 campaign, although they have never brought him on board. It is unclear how much interest Dallas has in bringing a new receiver into the fold with only two games remaining in the regular season, but in his most recent update on the Beckham situation, Jones said that “time is moving on down the road relative to playing in the playoffs and so every day diminishes our chances of going forward.”

Viewers Were Stunned By Kanye West’s Pitch-Perfect ‘Cameo’ In ‘Glass Onion’

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery finally hit Netflix this weekend and by most accounts, it lives up to the hype. While it had its detractors (namely Ben Shapiro, who might have seen a bit of himself in its ludicrous representatives of the shallow moneyed class), most of the reactions have been overwhelmingly positive — even if lots of attention has been lavished on one of its stars’ head wrinkles. As a satire of so-called disruptors, it’s spot-on, right down to the “cameo” appearance of one of the bigger self-righteous buffoons in pop culture today: Kanye West.

Kanye doesn’t actually appear in the film; rather, his likeness is captured in a mural on the wall of billionaire tech genius Miles Bron’s island home — the titular Glass Onion. It’s just a pitch-perfect detail that this pompous, self-important dork would admire Kanye so much that he’d get a painting of him on his wall. Of course, he would. Before Kanye’s recent spate of hateful behavior, you could imagine all kinds of these clueless capitalists boasting about their associations with Ye. Hell, even now, it seems like a significant portion of them are still okay with giving him a platform.

Now, the film was shot last year, well before Kanye finally fulfilled the prediction that Zack Fox made in 2018, but it probably plays even better and more on the nose now. Just check out viewers’ reactions as they realized that yes, this Elon Musk stand-in (although director Rian Johnson denies it) is just so proud of his Kanye mural. Hey, remember when Elon let Kanye back on Twitter (along with Donald Trump and a bunch of other vaguely Nazi-ish characters)? Janelle Monae’s character has the right idea.

Please (Respectfully) Enjoy This Three-Hour Loop Of The ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Beach Football Scene

The beach football scene in Top Gun: Maverick is two minutes and 25 seconds long. I checked for, uh, research purposes. If that’s not enough time spent respectfully staring at shirtless hunks (and Monica Barbaro’s Phoenix!) for you, here’s a late Christmas present: Paramount has released a three-hour loop of the sequence on YouTube.

“Some folks might prefer staring at a crackling fire for their yuletide celebrations, but if you’re the type who feels the need for speed, a loop of Top Gun: Maverick‘s sweaty beach football scene might be the holiday joy you’re looking for,” the description reads. The video is not recommended for fans of the Denver Broncos.

“When I was prepping the movie, it was the thing that I got asked most about — is there going to be a volleyball scene? — which kind of surprised me. So the challenge was, if we’re going to do a beach scene, we got to work it into the narrative of our story. We’re not just going to do one to do it,” director Joseph Kosinski told the Hollywood Reporter about the scene. “Once it was clear that we were able to push the story forward and continue the narrative, then it was a matter of just having fun and being able to shoot a beach scene for Top Gun and just making the best version of it that I could.”

Top Gun: Maverick is available to watch on Paramount+.

Even Tulsi Gabbard Has Had It With Shady Rep. George Santos’ Lies And Straight-Up Called Him Out On Fox News

In the space of a few short weeks, it seems that incoming GOP Rep. George Santos has seen everything fall apart with his house of lies. He’s promised to explain himself, but his attempt to wave away detailing his claimed Jewish heritage (which he now describes as “Jew-ish”) led to a bunch of jokes. That doesn’t even begin to touch his falsehoods (as revealed by the New York Times) about his work history and personal life. And Santos wasn’t prepared for his unfriendly, on-air Fox News meeting with Tulsi Gabbard, who unyieldingly tore into him, too.

Tulsi wasn’t subtle: “My question is, do you have no shame?”

She continued to torch his “blatant lies” while pointing out that he appears to consider this all to be a joke. Via Politico:

“The results that people are looking for are called into question when you tell blatant lies. Not embellishments. And this is, I think, one of the biggest concerns, congressman-elect, is that you don’t really seem to be taking this seriously. You’ve apologized, you said you’ve made mistakes, but you’ve outright lied. A lie is not an embellishment on a résumé.”

It remains to be seen whether Santos can whether the storm, given that he attempted to claim, “We can have this discussion that’s going to go way above the American people’s head,” to which Gabbard responded, “You’re saying that this discussion will go way above the heads of the American people, basically insulting their intelligence.” That’s not exactly the best way to begin one’s career in D.C., and to further add to this mess, he’s receiving Marjorie Taylor Greene’s support in the wake of this Fox News interview. That kind of dubious endorsement might be the clearest sign of all that Santos won’t fare well with the mainstream GOP in D.C. or his constituents at home.

Anitta, BTS, And Taylor Swift Are Guinness World Records’ Most ‘Iconic’ Record Breakers Of 2022

Out of the many records broken this past year, Guinness World Records chose to spotlight six music acts. Yesterday (December 27), Anitta, BTS, and Taylor Swift were named in a list of 2022’s Iconic Record Breakers.

Anitta received two Guinness World Records this past year. The Brazilian superstar was first recognized on March 24 for becoming the first solo Latin artist to reach No. 1 on Spotify. With 6,391,619 global streams that day, Anitta’s breakthrough hit “Envolver” knocked Glass Animals’ “Heat Waves” out of the top spot on Spotify’s Global 50 chart. On August 28, Anitta was recognized as the first female solo artist to win Best Latin at the MTV Video Music Awards. Her video for “Envolver” triumphed over videos by Bad Bunny, J Balvin, and Becky G.

BTS was also spotlighted as one of Guinness World Records’ Iconic Record Breakers this year. In 2022, the South Korean boy band added three more records to its collection. BTS was recognized as the group with the most followers on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok. The guys also further solidified their title for having the most Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards blimps won by a music group.

Thanks to the success of her album Midnights, Taylor Swift added three more Guinness World Records to her tally. She was recognized for having the most-streamed album on Spotify in 24 hours, the most-streamed day-one streams of an album, and the most-streamed act on Spotify in 24 hours. Rounding out the rest of Guinness World Records’ Iconic Record Breakers list were Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, and Adele.

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Zayn Malik Is Rumored To Be Releasing His Fourth Album Sometime In The New Year

Fans of singer Zayn Malik are in for a treat come the new year. Rumors have begun to circulate that the songwriter is gearing up for a major return to music in 2023.

While it hasn’t been that long since Zayn’s last album, Nobody Is Listening, was released at the top of 2021, it didn’t have much-staying power in the midst of his then-legal battle with ex-girlfriend Gigi Hadid and her mother following their split. It also doesn’t help that pop music fans tend to move on so quickly.

The former One Direction member has kept himself busy with his visual art, seen in his merch line, Paynt By Zayn. He has held fans over with a guest verse on Yung Bleu’s song “Fire Inside” and a Jimi Hendrix tribute song titled “Angel” fans are excited for an entire body of work.

The last line within the entertainer’s biography on his official Spotify profile reads, “ZAYN is currently working on his highly anticipated fourth studio album.”

Zayn has dabbled in several genres, including pop, EDM, and R&B, so there’s no telling what direction he plans on taking on this new project. However, following his claims that institutions like The Grammys were gatekeeping his sound, he has a lot of pressure on him to over-deliver.

Craft Experts Shout Out The Best Beers For Cold Winter Nights

Regardless of where you live, you’re guaranteed to be in for a few cold (if not bone-chillingly frigid) nights over the next few months. Sure, you can wrap yourself in a giant fleece blanket or three and sit by a roaring fire, but you’re going to need other ways to warm your bones. For this, we turn to sex, weed, dancing, and (of course) alcohol.

When it comes to cold winter nights, nobody will fault you for immediately cracking open a bottle or two of warming whisk(e)y. That’s all well and good, but sometimes we’d rather savor a beer instead. Barleywines, Scotch ales, porters, and any number of over-the-top, barrel-aged imperial stouts are sure to make an appearance this winter. But so are wintry IPAs, schwarzbiers, and even ESBs.

To find these wintry gems, we turned to the professionals for help. We asked a handful of notable craft beer experts and brewers to tell us their favorite beers to drink on a cold winter night. Keep scrolling to see all of their selections.

Thomas Hardy’s Ale

Thomas Hardy’s Ale
Thomas Hardy’s

Ryan Pachmayer, head brewer at Yak & Yeti Brewpub and Restaurant in Arvada, Colorado

ABV: 11.7%

Average Price: $11.50 for an 11-ounce bottle

The Beer:

Those vintage Thomas Hardy’s bottles. I have more of the JW Lees, but the Hardy’s really hit the spot for me. They’re deep, complex and not cloying. They’re also a great size, at just over 6 ounce, enough to enjoy but not too much. I pour one into a medium brandy glass and sit by the fire.

Tasting Notes:

Favors of dried fruits, caramel, fruit esters, figs, and earthy, herbal hops are found on this classic, wintery barleywine.

Boulevard Bourbon Barrel Quad

Boulevard Bourbon Barrel Quad
Boulevard

Ryan Joy, lead brewer at Green Flash Brewery in San Diego

ABV: 12.2%

Average Price: $14.99 for a four-pack

The Beer:

Cold fall nights call for Belgian-style dark strong/quadruple. If it’s aged in bourbon barrels, even better. My favorite is Bourbon Barrel Quad from Boulevard Brewing in Kansas City. Vanilla and oak notes from the barrel blend well with the dark malt profile and characterful Belgian yeast.

Tasting Notes:

Notes of mulling spice and dried cherries along with the strong ABV will warm up on even the coolest of nights.

Ogopogo Nachtkrapp

Ogopogo Nachtkrapp
Ogopogo

Dave Ziolkowski, head brewer at Arts District Brewing Company in Los Angeles

ABV: 5.5%

Average Price: Limited Availability

The Beer:

Schwarzbier. Specifically, Ogopogo’s Nachtkrapp this year. We run a Schwarzbier festival at Arts District Brewing every December and try to strongarm all of our brewery friends into making Schwarzbier to submit to our Schwarzmas Schwarz-Off. Ogopogo just won first place last weekend. I’m doing my best over here to establish the link between Schwarzbier and the holiday season.

Tasting Notes:

It’s the perfect Christmas party chugger. Low ABV, light on the body, a touch of roast that turns more cocoa and squaw bread. We went through seventeen Schwarzbiers and Ogopogo’s won handily.

Perennial Maman

Perennial Maman
Perennial

Zach Fowle, advanced Cicerone and head of marketing at Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. in Phoenix, Arizona

ABV: 11.5%

Average Price: Limited Availability

The Beer:

Every time I try Perennial Artisan Ales’ rye barrel-aged imperial stout, Maman, I react with the same backwards head tilt and slow, appreciative ‘oof.’ I call it ‘The Maman Response.’ I’m thinking of writing a paper on it. But until the scientific community recognizes the value of such research, talking about the beer itself will have to do—and there’s a lot to say.

Tasting Notes:

Melted dark chocolate, woody maple syrup, and torched marshmallows squeeze the tongue like a fist; deeply toasted oak delivers a soft smokiness and sprinkles of toasted coconut when they let go. Fruity rye whiskey floats above the palate before the swallow, which surges with crumbled graham crackers and steak char. Luxardo cherries dance at the exhale, and the barbecue notes—the wood and smoke—become even more apparent as the beer warms. It’s thick and creamy as a milkshake and the heat of 11% ABV is noticeable, but both aspects are fully appropriate given the avalanche of flavor that rumbles down the gullet with each swallow. Oof.

Ex Novo Ruminator

Ex Novo Ruminator
Ex Novo

Wes Burbank, head brewer at Flix Brewhouse in San Antonio

ABV: 8%

Average Price: $7.99 for a 16-ounce can

The Beer:

Ruminator Doppelbock from Ex Novo (Portland, Oregon and Corrales, New Mexico). I love a good doppelbock on a nice fall evening, and this one checks all the boxes. Double-decocted malty goodness, made by wonderful people.

Tasting Notes:

Brown bread, toffee candy, dried fruits, and rich roasted malts make this a warming, bold beer for the cold nights ahead.

Ferment ESB

Ferment ESB
Ferment

Kaylen Gibbens, assistant brew master at Widmer Brothers Brewing in Portland, Oregon

ABV: 5.4%

Average Price: Limited Availability

The Beer:

It changes, but right now I keep going back to Ferment’s ESB. I just love how it starts with some complexity in aroma and body but has a nice clean finish. Not enough drinkers know the magic of a well-made extra special bitter.

Tasting Notes:

It starts with a gentle nutty sweetness and then moves in caramel malts, bready malts, chocolate, and light, earthy hops at the finish.

Fair State Life Ain’t Fair

Fair State Life Ain’t Fair
Fair State

Garth E. Beyer, certified Cicerone and owner and founder of Garth’s Brew Bar in Madison, Wisconsin

ABV: 14.8%

Average Price: $25 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans

The Beer:

Fair State Brewing Cooperative’s barleywine called Life Ain’t Fair is the best beer to drink on a cold fall night. This is a beer that makes you forget how cold it is. Or how late it has gotten since you cracked it open.

Tasting Notes:

It’s a stupidly simple flavor profile of straight caramel and toffee with a very light touch of floral and fig notes. The beer is almost sticky on the palate in the best way, but the ABV (14.8%) doesn’t let that stickiness last.

Sierra Nevada Celebration

Sierra Nevada Celebration
Sierra Nevada

Max Shafer, brew master at Roadhouse Brewing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming

ABV: 6.8%

Average Price: $11.99 for a six-pack

The Beer:

Celebration from Sierra Nevada. This beer sings fall and winter to me. It has a medium body, it’s slightly malty and hopped with some of the freshest hops around. It’s a great beer to drink to take a break from some of the darker, heavier beers of winter.

Tasting Notes:

The mild citrus balanced with pine makes me search for this release year after year. Grapefruit, tangerine, lime, and dank pine. This beer has it all.

Suarez Poet’s Walk

Suarez Poet’s Walk
Suarez

Kyle Warren, lead brewer at Exhibit ‘A’ Brewing Company in Framingham, Massachusetts

ABV: 10.6%

Average Price: Limited Availability

The Beer:

Poet’s Walk Suarez Family Brewery. Release the beer when it’s ready. That was what the folks over at Suarez decided when they bottled this beer back in 2017 and nearly four years later, it was finally released.

Tasting Notes:

A bit of intentional oxidation morphed this beer, bringing out some light vinegar and sherry on the nose, complemented by wine-like malty sweetness and a touch of sherry. The flavor is a plethora of dark fruit, including cherry, red grape, and pomegranate, layered with a brown sugary, malty sweetness. It finishes dry with a pleasant afterglow of higher alcohols. The sherry-like quality, compliments the mélange of mature fruit flavors, making this beer a joy to slowly sip, allowing it to warm and open up even more.

One of best made American barleywines I have had, I was quite sad when I drank my last bottle.

Kentucky Bourbon Ale

Kentucky Bourbon Ale
Kentucky

Judy Neff, owner and brewer at Checkerspot Brewing Company in Baltimore

ABV: 8.1%

Average Price: $12.99 for a four-pack

The Beer:

Once the weather starts to turn cold, I’m ready for the barrel-aged beers. My favorite that we don’t brew would have to be Kentucky Bourbon Ale with the strong bourbon barrel flavor and a balanced amber malt base.

Tasting Notes:

I love the combination of bourbon with amber beers – the vanilla and wood complement the malty flavors and they’ve been doing it for quite a while.

NBA Players Were In Awe Of Luka Doncic’s Historic Triple-Double Against The Knicks: ‘Some Video Game Sh*t’

It’s very hard to imagine that anyone will put up a better stat line in the NBA this season than Luka Doncic did against the New York Knicks on Tuesday night. Doncic scored 60 points, reeled in 21 rebounds, and dished out 10 assists in a thrilling overtime win for the Dallas Mavericks. The game only got to an extra period because Dallas made up a 9-point deficit in 33.9 seconds, which was capped off by Doncic purposely missing a free throw, getting the rebound, and hitting a shot as time expired.

That stat line is one we’ve never seen before. Both Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor have had triple-doubles with 50-plus points and 20-plus rebounds, while James Harden has had a triple-double with 60 points. Never before has someone hit the 60-point mark in a triple-double where they had that many rebounds, and after the game, a number of NBA players took to Twitter and heaped praise onto Dallas’ MVP candidate.

Kevin Durant called the performance the sort of thing you only get in video games.

Evan Paul Pierce couldn’t help but say that we may never see a game like this again.

Twelve hours after he sent those tweets, Pierce was still thinking about Doncic’s performance.

Doncic and the Mavericks’ next game is on Thursday night against the Houston Rockets.
