Henry Cavill’s Superman Duties Mean He Has To Leave ‘The Witcher’ And Pass His Swords And Medallion To Liam Hemsworth

Henry Cavill’s been playing Superman for about a decade now, but he hasn’t had a lot of chances to strut his stuff. The last time he played him, it was for Justice League reshoots that infamously had to work around that magnificent mustache he’d grown for Mission Impossible 6. But last week he had some good news: He was strapping on his Supes once again. Alas, that now comes with bad news: It means having to ditch his popular gig on the popular Netflix show The Witcher.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Cavill will be forfeiting the long grey mane of Geralt of Riva, the monster hunter on the medieval-inspired fantasy. But that doesn’t mean the show goes with him. For the fourth season, Cavill will be replaced by Liam Hemsworth.

“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,” said Cavill in a statement. “In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.”

This also doesn’t mean you’ve seen the last of Cavill’s take on Geralt. After all, the third season, with Cavill still present, is due next summer.

A kid’s wrong answer to this riddle went viral. It shows a lot about how we process death.

This article originally appeared on 01.12.18

Teacher Bret Turner thought he’d kick off the morning with his first-grade students using a little riddle.

On the whiteboard in the front of the class, he scrawled it out in black marker:

“I am the beginning of everything, the end of everywhere. I’m the beginning of eternity, the end of time & space.”

One student raised their hand, the first to venture a guess.

Now, the answer, of course, is the letter “E.” (Get it!?) But the student had a different idea.

“Death?”

Turner later described the incident on Twitter in a post that’s now gone massively viral. “Such an awed, somber, reflective hush fell over the class that I didn’t want to tell them that actually the answer is the letter ‘E’, which just seemed so banal in the moment,” he wrote.

People on Twitter got a huge kick out of the somewhat dark, existential moment. But there might just be an important lesson buried in this story somewhere about how to process “the end.”

Many users who replied to the Tweet were impressed by the unnamed kid’s thoughtfulness and ability to understand the concept of death at such a young age. (How many first graders would peg death as “the beginning of eternity?”)

But it turns out that kids are much more perceptive than we give them credit for.

An article in National Geographic breaks down the three key truths that children must eventually learn about death. First, that it’s irreversible (people who die aren’t just on vacation). Second, it makes your body non-functional (people who are dead aren’t just asleep). And third, it’s universal (everything and everybody dies eventually).

Some studies have shown that kids start to understand the concept as young as 3 years old and gradually learn to accept the many layers of it in the years that follow.

It takes time for anyone to fully grasp the gravity and foreverness of death. But we ought to learn to appreciate the whimsical, partial understanding that young children have.

Some Twitter users who read Turner’s account of the riddle accused the student in question of having a morbid personality or an unusual fascination with the macabre. After all, few adults would be brave enough to blurt out something so dark.

It’s a lot more likely the kid just hasn’t been conditioned to fear death yet, to speak about it in hushed tones — if at all. This might be the same kind of kid who finds out his grandma has died and says, casually, “Oh, OK. Bye, grandma! See you soon!”

When you think about it, that’s actually a pretty sweet and remarkably peaceful way of thinking about death. So let’s stop rushing kids into having adult-sized worries about the world and let them discover it at their own pace.

As long as it gives us funny moments like this one, anyway.

A mom told her OB she might have postpartum depression. Then they called the cops.

This story originally appeared on 01.24.18

Jessica Porten recently visited her doctor four months after giving birth to her daughter, Kira. She wasn’t feeling quite like herself.

She had been dealing with overwhelming sadness and fits of anger, which she knew was likely stemming from a case of postpartum depression.

In a Facebook post, Porten recounts the story of that appointment.

“I tell them I have a very strong support system at home, so although I would never hurt myself or my baby,” she writes. “I’m having violent thoughts and I need medication and therapy to get through this.”

In other words, she went to her doctor to ask for help for an extremely normal and treatable issue that affects an estimated 1 million women in the U.S. each year in one form or another.

But instead of getting help, as Porten tells it, the office did something pretty unexpected: They called the police.

Because of her admission to “violent thoughts,” staff wanted the police to escort Porten to the ER for evaluation.

The cops, according to Porten, were skeptical of the need for their presence when they arrived and allowed her to drive herself to the hospital.

But the ordeal continued.

“We arrive at the ER and I’m checked in, triaged, blood drawn. I am assigned a security guard to babysit me,” she writes.

She says she waited for over an hour to get a room, all while wrangling her months-old baby. After some brief tests, a lot of waiting, and a super-short interview with a social worker, she was deemed mentally fit enough to be discharged.

Porten and her 4-month-old didn’t leave the hospital until after midnight.

The worst part? Porten never got the help she asked for.

In addition to the undue stress and wasted time, Porten left the hospital without having received any medical help whatsoever.

“Not once during all of this has a doctor laid eyes on me,” she writes. “Not once. Not even before they decided to call the cops on me.”

Porten says that, for all her time and effort, she received some papers and pamphlets and was sent on her way.

“I’m still processing all of the emotions that are coming with being treated this way. I’m not exactly sure what to do here. I will say I am deeply hurt and upset, and above all angry and disgusted and disappointed by how this whole thing went down.”

She also points out that if she had been a woman of color, her ordeal probably would have been even more drawn out and traumatic.

Postpartum depression is a serious issue – as is the stigma it carries.

Postpartum depression is common. The condition, and even the scary violent thoughts that sometimes accompany it, may even have an important evolutionary purpose. Some argue that new moms are on high alert for danger and that stress can sometimes visually manifest itself in their thoughts.

But, as with most mental health issues, postpartum depression can carry a lot of shame, embarrassment, and guilt for the women affected by it — leading them to ignore their symptoms instead of seeking help. One study even found that countries that don’t recognize postpartum depression by name actually see women more likely to come forward with their symptoms.

Stories like Porten’s show exactly why many women would rather suffer in silence than be poked, prodded, and treated inhumanely. And of course, not getting proper treatment will only make things wore.

It’s time for a different approach.

It may be a common policy to call the police in the interest of the child’s safety. But a policy that better addresses the mother’s concerns and gets her the help she needs, without being shamed, is definitely a better way to go.

To get there, we need to help more honest and brave women feel comfortable coming forward about the aspects of postpartum depression that are hard to talk about. And we all need to better educate ourselves on the complexities of mental health issues and, more importantly, the human beings behind them.

You Haven’t Seen The Last Of Paul Bettany’s Vision, Because Now He’s Getting A ‘WandaVision’ Spinoff

Paul Bettany has had the wildest ride of any actor in the MCU. He started as J.A.R.V.I.S., the voice of Iron Man’s A.I. unit. Then he evolved into the android Vision. Despite being a robot, he paired off with Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff. He ate it at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, but was resurrected for WandaVision, which ended with him transforming once again, this time into what’s been dubbed White Vision. It’s a lot for a guy who once thought Marvel was going to can him, and his story is far from over.

As per Deadline, Marvel Studios is working on a Vision spinoff for Disney+, to be called Vision Quest. Sources tell the publication that the show the character “trying to regain his memory and humanity” after his latest mutation. (Although can a robot really “regain” the “humanity” it technically never had?) The show might bring back Maximoff, too, which would be a big deal, as Olsen semi-recently confessed she has no idea when Marvel wants her to come back to play a character who started as a semi-villain, became one of the heroes, then became a semi-villain again.

The Vision show isn’t the only WandaVision spinoff. Kathryn Hahn’s baddie Agatha Harkness is getting one, while Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau has moved over to The Marvels. In the meantime, don’t confuse Vision Quest with the 1985 romance that features Madonna performing “Crazy for You.”

Get Ready Because ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ Is Going To Be Almost As Long As ‘Titanic’

Avatar opened so long ago. How long ago? Barack Obama was still in his first year in his first term. His successor had only recently joined Twitter, which was still young. There had only been two films in the MCU. It’s been a while, both for Pandora and for its creator, James Cameron, who hasn’t made anything since. He has to make up for lost time, and boy has he.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the 13-years-later sequel Avatar: The Way of Water has an official running time, and it’s a doozy: three hours and 10 minutes. For some perspective, the original Avatar was a “mere” two hours and 41 minutes. Still, its sequel isn’t quite as long as another Cameron picture, Titanic, which was long the highest-grossing movie in film history (not adjusted for inflation) despite being three hours and 14 minutes.

Much has changed since 2009. For one thing, movies are generally longer. Avengers: Endgame ran three hours and two minutes. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever clocks in at original Avatar length: 161 minutes. Then there’s Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman. When it came out in 2009, Avatar was a game-changer. Way of Water may be, too; after all, it’s already allowed Kate Winslet to beat one of Tom Cruise’s records. But at least it’s conforming to one trend.

Shelley Duvall Is Set To Make Her First Film Appearance In Two Decades After Dropping Out Of Hollywood

It’s been a good, long while since Shelley Duvall appeared on the big screen — two decades, to be exact. What’s she been up to? Basically she’s just been chilling a small Texas town, enjoying life, minding her own business, except when contacted by the occasional journalist or filmmaker. (Or Dr. Phil, but more on that in a moment.) But now it seems she’s either baby-stepping back into the movies or simply doing a one-off return.

As per Deadline, Duvall will make a small appearance in The Forest Hills, an indie horror starring Edward Furlong, Chiko Mendez, and Dee Wallace. The film, Deadline reports, “follows a disturbed man who is tormented by nightmarish visions, after enduring head trauma while camping in the Catskill Mountains.” Duvall will play the mother of said man (played by Mendez), who is also his inner voice.

From the ‘70s through the ‘90s, Duvall was a staple of American cinema, as well as television. She did seven films with Robert Altman and endured an epic (and emotionally taxing) Stanley Kubrick shoot with The Shining. In the ‘80s, she launched her own children’s show, Faerie Tale Theatre, which brought on big stars to juice up oft-told stories.

By the mid-‘90s, she’d lost interest in Hollywood, and she and her partner, musician Dan Gilroy, high-tailed it to the depths of Texas, where they remain today. There was much speculation about what happened to her, which was not helped by a notorious 2016 Dr. Phil segment, in which she was portrayed as unhinged and unwell. Her friends and family condemned the segment, saying it was unrepresentative. A 2021 piece by The Hollywood Reporter painted a more complex portrait of her current life, finding her to be happy and content.

Anyway, welcome back, Shelley Duvall. The movies (and television) have been all the lesser without you.

Matthew Perry Said He Asked Jennifer Aniston Out Years Before ‘Friends’ (But She Just Wanted To Be…Friends)

Matthew Perry’s Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing isn’t even out yet, but it’s already become the most attention-nabbing memoir in ages. On one hand, it appears to be a bracing depiction of one man’s harrowing addiction. On the other, it has him talking about people he’s made out with and others he may or may not inexplicably hate. It also has dirt on his fellow Friends alumni, including one he encountered long a few years before they wound up with two of the splashiest gigs on television.

In his book, Perry talks about how he first met Aniston through mutual acquaintances sometime in the early ‘90s. “I was immediately taken by her (how could I not be?) and liked her, and I got the sense she was intrigued, too — maybe it was going to be something,” Perry writes. “Back then I got two jobs in one day — one was Haywire, an America’s Funniest Home Videos-type show, and the other was a sitcom. So I called Jennifer and I said, ‘You’re the first person I wanted to tell this to!’”

But Perry realized he was coming on too strong. “Looking back, it was clear that this made her think I liked her too much or in the wrong kind of way… and I only compounded the error by then asking her out,” Perry writes. “She declined (which made it very difficult to actually go out with her), but said that she’d love to be friends with me, and I compounded the compound by blurting, ‘We can’t be friends!’”

As fate would have it, the two would wind up spending 11 seasons on one of the most enduring sitcoms of the ‘90s. “Fairly early in the making of Friends I realized that I was still crushing badly on Jennifer Aniston,” Perry writes. “Our hellos and goodbyes became awkward. And then I’d ask myself, How long can I look at her? Is three seconds too long?”

Eventually, Perry’s crush on Aniston “disappeared in the hot glow of the show” as the show’s popularity skyrocketed. That helped kill it. “That, and her deafening lack of interest,” he adds.

Perry elaborated upon this tidbit during his big sit-down with ABC News’ Diane Sawyer, which aired on Friday night. He revealed Aniston wasn’t the only Friends cast member he crushed on. “Well, how can you not have a crush on Jenny? And Courteney [Cox]? And Lisa [Kudrow]?” Perry told Sawyer. “It made it kind of difficult to go to work, because I had to pretend that I didn’t.”

You can watch a segment from Perry’s Diane Sawyer chat below.

Deandre Ayton Left Suns-Pelicans With A Left Ankle Sprain And Will Not Return

The Phoenix Suns are off to a strong start to the 2022-23 season at 3-1 with some wins over West contenders like the Mavs and Warriors, which isn’t a surprise based on their performance the last two regular seasons but is a very positive sign after what can only be described as a disastrous end to last year and offseason.

Among the biggest storylines coming into the season in Phoenix was how their young star center Deandre Ayton would respond after they tried, by all accounts, to trade him during the offseason, only to find themselves matching an offer sheet to bring him back. Through the first four games, Ayton showed he would continue to be a pro and produce on the court despite any lingering frustrations with the organization, averaging 18.2 points and 9.5 rebounds to start the season.

On Friday night, Ayton had four points and three boards in his first eight minutes of work, looking like he was on the way to another solid night against the Pelicans when he came down on Jonas Valanciunas’ foot after a jump shot and turned over his left ankle.

Ayton would leave and eventually go back to the locker room, where he was diagnosed with a sprained ankle and ruled out for the remainder of the game.

Given Ayton was able to at least get up and try to walk it off a bit hopefully is an indication that it’s not a severe sprain, but it is one the Suns will be cautious about with their young star center and keep him out for the rest of the night at the least. We’ll have to wait and see what his status is for Sunday’s game against Houston or if he could miss any extended time after further testing tomorrow.

Joshua Primo Announced He Will Focus On His Mental Health After Being Waived By The Spurs

About an hour before the Spurs were scheduled to tipoff a home game against the Bulls, the team issued a stunning release that they were waiving Joshua Primo, the 12th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.

Primo played in the first four games for San Antonio, averaging 7 points per game in just over 23 minutes per, before sitting out Wednesday’s game with what was listed as “left glute soreness.” His release shocked the NBA as the Spurs had just picked up his third-year option on October 10, guaranteeing his $4.5 million salary for next season, and he was one of a few point guards on the San Antonio roster. There were no details on why Primo was released given, with Gregg Popovich declining to speak on it beyond the vague statement in the team’s official release, and while many assumed something must have happened off the court, no NBA newsbreakers could find out any information on specifics.

Later Friday night, Primo released a statement himself to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski explaining that he was seeking help for “previous trauma I have suffered” and would be focusing on his mental health treatment for the time being after being released.

Hopefully Primo is able to get the help he needs and can feel comfortable speaking on whatever he is dealing with currently in the future, as he notes he hopes to be able to help others in the future.
