DJ Quik Tells A Harrowing Story Of Performing Right After A Motorcycle Wreck

This week on People’s Party with Talib Kweli, Kweli and Jasmin Leigh play host to multiplatinum rapper, producer and Compton legend, DJ Quik. For those who don’t know, Quik is arguably one of the greatest and most impactful artists in the history of west coast rap — an architect of the sound that made the world pay attention to rappers from Compton and South Central LA. His catalog is extensive with cuts alongside some of the best to ever do it including Jay-Z, Dr.Dre, Snoop Dogg, Tupac, Kurupt, Erick Sermon, and Kweli himself, among many others.

Industry-wide, Quik’s work ethic is well known and deeply respected and that’s underscored in the video above — where he tells Kweli a wild story about rocking a stage in a neck brace and bleeding from scrapes after a motorcycle accident. At the time, Quik was set to perform in a Back to School concert with De La Soul and Kweli. The night before the show, Quik’s close friend, rising Compton rapper Mausberg, was murdered. The next day found Quik grieving while working on a song that featured the slain rapper. He decided to take a break from the recording session to clear his head and find some joy.

He called up his friends and said he wanted them to meet up, so he could show them a motorcycle stunt he had been practicing. His friends pulled up and he went to do a stunt called “The Standing Dead Christ.” As he transitioned into doing the move a sudden gust of wind caused him to lose his balance. Quiks body and bike spilled onto the asphalt at high speed.

“I hit the ground so hard, I was knocked out,” he says. “And when I woke up I was still sliding. I drove myself to the hospital on the bike. Me and the bike were both leaking.”

Though the crowd was told Quik wouldn’t be at the show, Quik showed up anyway.

“I did not want to be in despair. I popped some ibuprofen and pulled up!”

Kweli described that particular performance as a classic set. Listen to DJ Quik talk about his life as one of hip-hop’s most celebrated producers on People’s Party with Talib Kweli on Luminary or watch the full episode below.

Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery Will Star In Marvel’s New ‘Wonder Man’ Series Because, Hey, Why Not?

Ben Kingsley is officially coming back for his third Marvel project. The iconic actor will reprise his role of Trevor Slattery, who first appeared in 2013’s Iron Man 3 before popping up again, seven years later, in 2020’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. However, this time around, Trevor will be making an appearance on the small screen in the upcoming Wonder Man series for Disney+.

As for why Trevor and why now, the answer is simple: Acting! In the comics, Wonder Man is an actor, and in the MCU, so is Trevor, so it only tracks that they would cross paths as fellow thespians. The two also have a connection to Iron Man, which could play into a Trevor and Wonder Man team-up that nobody ever once predicted. Via Variety:

The show was first revealed to be in the works back in June. It will focus on the Marvel character Simon Williams, a.k.a. Wonder Man. In the comics, Williams is the son of a wealthy industrialist whose company falls on hard times due to competition from Tony Stark’s Stark Industries. Williams then accepts an offer from villain Baron Zemo that gives him ionic superpowers including super strength and durability. After fighting the Avengers several times, Wonder Man ultimately joined their ranks.

On the filmmaking side, Kingsley’s appearance also has a simple explanation: The Wonder Man series is being executive produced and created by Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton, who accomplished the Herculean task of untangling Trevor from The Mandarin mess created by Iron Man 3. It was a whole thing that we’d go cross-eyed trying to explain, so long story short, Trevor is just Trevor now and ready for super-powered friendship.

‘Rap Sh!t’: The Funny, Wholesome, Good, And Odd Sh!t From Season 1, Episode 7

(SPOILERS for this week’s Rap Sh!t episode will be found below.)

Shawna and Mia are taking Miami by storm. They figured out their aesthetic, their raps are crisp, and their production is top notch thanks to help from Lamont, Mia’s baby father. In episode seven of the inaugural season of Rap Sh!t, Shawna and Mia gear up for their biggest opportunity yet: a performance at a party at James Harden’s mansion. As they prepare for that performance, we get updates on Shawna and Maurice’s budding romance as well as Mia and Lamont rekindling their relationship.

Weekly episodes of Issa Rae’s Rap Sh!t are filled with funny sh!t, wholesome sh!t, good sh!t, and odd sh!t — all in just 30-minutes. After each episode, we’ll recap each of the moments for you which you can check out below.

Wholesome Sh!t

Mia and Lamont: We’ve yet to hear what went wrong with Mia and Lamont initially, as they started the season at odds. However, with just one episode left in the season, the two are not only on better terms, but their romantic spark has returned. Episode seven concludes with a sex scene with Mia and Lamont, and at the end of it, Mia questions Lamont’s intentions. She asks if it has to do with her growing rap career, and while Lamont admits to it playing a role in things, he adds that he genuinely wants to make things work out for Mia and their daughter. This answer is met with a smile from Mia as they doze off for the night

Funny Sh!t

Mia and Lamont: Staying on the two who’ve rekindled their romance, one of the funny moments in the recent Rap Sh!t episode comes as Mia and Lamont get their daughter ready for school. As Mia sends her off, she warns Lamont not to feed her too much candy and junk food. “Don’t be having my baby eating all that candy and junk and sh*t,” she says. Lamont’s response is a quick and funny one, as he says, “Aye, it’s my baby too. I can give it to her if I want to.”

Good Sh!t

Shawna and Mia: The ladies have been working hard to move upward in their rap careers, and with two solid records under their belts, “Seduce & Scheme” and “Nann Badder,” their success is only growing by the minute. Shawna and Mia’s next task was killing a performance at James Harden’s party. They rehearsed “Seduce & Scheme” and “Nann Badder” to perform at the party, and when they took to the stage to perform the former track, Shawna and Mia absolutely bodied it. Onlookers in the crowd included Tobe Nwigwe and notable Miami agents, who were all impressed by the song and the performance. It was going well until…

Odd Sh!t

Shawna: During the second set of Shawna and Mia’s performance, Shawna decides that a freestyle would be better than a rendition of “Nann Badder.” Unbeknownst to her, there is a time limit on their set and by the time she finishes the freestyle, there’s not enough time to for her and Mia to perform “Nann Badder.” The freestyle was honestly an odd move from Shawna, especially when she and Mia rehearsed their set over and over again. Add in the fact that Shawna’s freestyle went against the duo’s style and aesthetic making for what resulted in an incohesive performance. It was also one that left Mia upset that she was pushed aside for Shawna to have her selfish moment in the spotlight.

HBO Max’s ‘Rap Sh!t’ airs on Thursdays at 9:00pm EST.

A 1991 clip shows how calmly Steve Irwin responds to getting bitten by a snake on TV

If you were conscious in the ’90s or early 2000s then you likely have a pretty good idea who Steve Irwin is. If not, then you’ve probably at the very least become familiar with his children, Bindi and Robert, who have carried on his legacy of educating the public about animals. But in 1991, Irwin was just on the cusp of becoming a household name, so getting bitten on the neck by a snake while filming his weekly segment probably wasn’t in the cards. But the snake must’ve been tired of being worn like a necklace and had other ideas.

Irwin was always known for his excitement around animal education but the normally animated Australian was oddly calm as the snake clamped down. Funnily enough, the little python decided to take a bite right after Irwin had finished telling the host that the snake wasn’t feeling threatened so he wouldn’t bite. Just as the words finished leaving his mouth the snake took his chance. You can see the realization sink into Irwin’s face just before he tells the crew in a calm tone, “You might have to cut it. He’s biting my neck.” He emphasizes, “I’m serious,” before instructing the cameraman to zoom in closer so he can get a better look to try to get the snake to release him. Thankfully the snake was nonvenomous and promptly let go of the late star’s neck.

Irwin surely was no stranger to animal bites at that point in his career, but I’m not sure there’s anything that prepares you for getting bitten on the neck while doing a television show.

Finally, there’s a disposable diaper that’s safe for your baby and the planet

When it comes to diapers, most parents face a difficult choice. On the one hand, traditional disposable diapers are terrible for the environment, and can contain chemicals that may pose serious health risks. But with all the science and technology available to us, surely somebody can figure out how to make a disposable diaper that’s safer for babies and the planet, right? Well, here’s some good news. Mike Lindell Admits That His ‘Moment Of Truth Summit’ Failed (Wait For It) Because Big Tech ‘Suppressed’ Him (There It Is)

Last week, Mike Lindell threw a two-day long event called the “Moment of Truth Summit,” which was, of course, dedicated to the exact opposite of the truth. Namely, Donald Trump’s “Big Lie.” Heck, Steve Bannon and Marjorie Taylor Greene were the featured guests, so that tells you everything you need to know.

However, it appears the event was not a success. But don’t take our word for it: here’s Mike Lindell admitting that it barely generated any attention. Although, the MyPillow CEO stops short of realizing that maybe it’s because people are tired of hearing crazed conspiracy theories because he immediately launches into a brand new one: Big Tech “suppressed” him, you guys.

Via Ron Filipkowski on Twitter:

We had Google, Google, Yahoo, Bing, Duck Duck, all the search engines worked against us there. I bought ad words on every single one of them platforms so that if you put in ‘Moment of Truth Summit’ or ‘Mike Lindell’s event,’ an ad wouldv’e came up. So it would’ve been the first one telling you where to go there and all these things. This happened back when I did Absolute Proof: The Movie, Google and all of them took away my ability to buy those ads. I expected to come in this morning and have $200,000 in bills from all of them ad words, everyone talking about it and sprading the word.

Less than $100, everybody. What they did is totally suppressed these events and this ad word. I’m here live on Facebook, there’s only 300 people there. They’ve suppressed Facebook.

As for who would be mad about not having to pay a $200,000 bill, well… Lindell has repeatedly bragged about how much money he’s dumped into his election fraud crusade. According to the last figure he’s floated, Lindell has dropped at least $30 million into unsuccessfully proving that Trump actually won the 2020 election.

Henry Selick Has The Correct Answer When Asked About A Sequel To ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’

Henry Selick is four for four when it comes to Certified Good Movies. The stop-motion animation legend directed The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach, Monkeybone (misunderstood at the time, but a cult favorite now), and Coraline, which came out in 2009. Selick has been quiet since then — stop-motion takes awhile! — but he’ll attempt to go five for five when his next feature hits Netflix this Halloween.

Wendell & Wild follows two scheming demon brothers, voiced by Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele (Key and Peele reunion!), who “enlist the help of a troubled 13-year-old teenager to summon them into the Land of the Living,” according to Collider. “But when Kat Elliot, the aforementioned teen, voiced by Lyric Ross, has a high asking price in return, the two demonic siblings soon embark on a bizarre, brazen, and hilarious adventure that should prove to be a hell of a good time.” Wendell & Wild sounds creepy and cute, a Selick speciality, not unlike The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline.

Would he ever consider making a sequel to either film?

“People have always wanted a sequel for Nightmare and Coraline,” Selick told Screenrant. “If there’s a good story, it might be worth doing. But too frequently, sequels are just a remake of the first film with some mild changes.”

This is the correct answer. The Nightmare Before Christmas 2 and/or Coraline 2 could be good, but it’s more exciting for Selick to make movies based on original ideas instead of sequels. Hot Topic will be just fine without new Jack Skellington merchandise.

Wendell & Wild comes to Netflix on October 28.

Lawrence O’Donnell Made The Case That Weaselly Lindsey Graham Is The New Notorious Traitorous Nazi Sympathizer, Vidkun Quisling

Lawrence O’Donnell does not have many kind things to say about Lindsey Graham. And on Monday night, the MSNBC host did not hold back when the conversation turned to the South Carolina senator, who made a dark prediction over the weekend when he issued what seemed to be both a warning and a threat that “if there is a prosecution of Donald Trump for mishandling classified information after the Clinton debacle … there will be riots in the street.” It was this ominous statement that led O’Donnell to make a painfully unflattering comparison between Graham and Nazi sympathizer Vidkun Quisling.

As Raw Story reports, O’Donnell did not mince words on Monday night, when he described Graham as hitting “rock bottom.” And while he noted that the term is usually used to describe an alcoholic who needs to find their way to sobriety, O’Donnell says that “there is no cure for what has sunk Lindsey Graham to his own, very dangerous rock bottom,” which the commentator sees as an unprecedented act.

Senator Lindsey Graham did what no senator in our lifetimes has done. Senator Lindsey Graham said something this weekend that you’ve never heard another United States senator say. Lindsey Graham said something that no other senator has ever said in the history of the United States Senate. Lindsey Graham actually said: If you prosecute a friend of mine, there will be riots in the streets. Those were his words.

The sad part, as O’Donnell noted, is that the friend Graham was referring to was Trump, who the host described as “an actual friend to no one, as Lindsey Graham so tragically knows.”

In fact, Graham was once one of Trump’s fiercest critics. Ahead of the 2016 presidential election, the senator urged his fellow Republicans to steer clear of the reality show real estate developer. In a 2015 interview with CNN, Graham poked fun at Trump’s political slogan by noting that the best way to make America great again was by telling “Donald Trump to go to hell.” He went on to describe the future president as a “a race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot,” and stated that “He doesn’t represent my party.”

Fast forward to January 6, 2021: In the wake of the insurrection, Graham was caught on tape criticizing Trump and praising Joe Biden. When asked about his thought-to-be-private comments, Graham had the audacity to say he was “wrong.”

To O’Donnell, Graham’s actions make him worse than a traitor — they make him what Winston Churchill would have called a “Quisling,” a reference Vidkun Quisling, a Norwegian military officer who conspired with the Nazis during World War II to promote fascism to his soldiers and people.

“The big difference and important difference between Lindsey Graham and Norway’s original Quisling is that Vidkun Quisling was a fascist long before the Nazis invaded his country,” O’Donnell said. “When Quisling was collaborating with the Nazis, he was a true believer. Would that Winston Churchill were still with us so we could prevail upon his wisdom to judge for us which is worse. Quisling the true believer or Lindsey Graham, the Quisling.”

You can watch O’Donnell’s full comments above.

Netflix Is Being Sued For Defamation Over A Certain Character From ‘Inventing Anna’ (But It’s Not Who You Think)

Netflix is no stranger to backlash, in fact, the streamer thrives on it! The latest controversy involves the hit scammer show, Inventing Anna, but, surprisingly, the fallout is not from notorious grifter Anna Delvey, the show’s main protagonist.

The series follows a dramatized version of Delvey’s various scamming antics, including a very real trip that was funded by her friend Rachel Williams, a former Vanity Fair editor. Williams was forced to use her own credit cards while vacationing in Morocco with Devley, who posed as a rich heiress and allegedly conned Willaims out of nearly $62,000 for the trip.

Williams is unhappy with how she was portrayed in the series, and played by actress Kaite Lowes. Williams is filing a defamation case, claiming that her character came off as “greedy” despite the fact that the show is a little ambiguous about what is true and what is false when it comes to Delvey.

The lawsuit claims that “Netflix made a deliberate decision for dramatic purposes to show Williams doing or saying things in the Series which portray her as a greedy, snobbish, disloyal, dishonest, cowardly, manipulative and opportunistic person.” Williams had previously sold the rights to her story to HBO after writing a successful book about the ordeal, which took place in 2017.

Williams hopes to clear her name, though the damage is probably already done: the series debuted in February and snagged two Emmy noms. “The Series has been viewed by millions of people around the world, and as a result of Netflix’s false portrayal of her as a despicable person, she has been subjected to a torrent of online abuse which have caused her personal humiliation, distress, and anguish, as well as damages to her earnings and/or potential earnings,” the complaint reads, citing the fact that Netflix used her real name and distinguishing traits in the series, which allegedly do not reflect Williams as a person.

What would Anna Delvey think of all this? She’s busy putting on VIP art shows and pushing her NFTs from jail, so she’ll probably be fine.
