Dr. Oz’s Senate Run Is Already A Train Wreck Thanks To A Bluetooth Fiasco And A ‘F*cking Girl Reporter’

“Grifter” and “liar” Dr. Mehmet Oz is running for senate in Pennsylvania. His ads have started to run on TV and he’s made the obligatory appearances on Fox News, but his campaign headquarters isn’t exactly a bustling hotspot. It technically exists in Montgomery County, PA, but when New York magazine reporter Olivia Nuzzi went to visit for a profile, she discovered “there was no discernible election-related activity of any kind. No staff. No yard signs. No signs of life at all.” His campaign manager refused to comment as well, so Nuzzi reached out to Dr. Oz and his wife Lisa directly.

“How did you get my number?” she asked sharply. I told her that her number was listed in public records, and this annoyed her too. “Oh,” she said, “I should have gotten rid of that.” I was about to explain that public records don’t work that way, but she cut in. “Have a nice day,” she said, but it sounded like a cross between the way women of the South say “Bless your heart” and men of Brooklyn call some asshole “pal” after being cut off in traffic. Then she hung up.

Except she didn’t. Mrs. Oz “had mistakenly connected her device to what sounded like the sound system of a vehicle, meaning that as they engaged in paranoid conversation and argument for more than four minutes, I remained on the line, hearing every word of it.” Nuzzi heard Dr. Oz accuse her of making things up (“Y–y–you know what it’s — it’s — it’s called, it’s called lying also. It’s called being a liar”), and Mrs. Oz call her a “f*cking girl reporter.” Rudy would be proud.

Dr. Oz also lashed out at Michelle Bouchard, a friend who Nuzzi interviewed a few days prior. “She said things she shouldn’t have f*cking said. She shouldn’t have f*cking said,” he fumed. “She said sh*t she shouldn’t have said! That I was going to be the next leader of the Republican Party… That Michelle told her I’m going to be the next leader of the Republican Party, sh*t like that, that’s what you told me she said!” Bouchard actually said that “the new Republican Party is emerging, and the new Republican Party is going to be great,” but this was enough for Dr. Oz to insist that he and Lisa “lock our door.”

The call ended shortly after that, but then Nuzzi’s phone rang. “It was Lisa Oz,” she wrote. “I picked it up and said hello. She paused, then she hung up on me. This time she was successful.” You can (and absolutely should) read the profile here.

Patti Smith, New York City Punk Rock Institution, Received The Key To The City

Say what you will about Bill de Blasio’s tenure as the Mayor of New York City, he got this one right. On December 27th, the mayor awarded the key to the city to punk music icon, poet, author, and overall inspiration to many, Patti Smith. “I wish I could give New York City the key to me, because that’s how I feel about our city,” Smith said in a ceremony yesterday.

“This is an extraordinary pleasure and honor for me, because for any of us who came of age in the 1970’s and 1980’s, there were many voices out there, many artists out there and many musicians out there, but there was only one Patti Smith,” de Blasio said. He cited Smith’s “ability to cut through all the swirls that were around us and speak some more profound truths” and that it’s a “a fair phrase” to call Smith “the Godmother of Punk.”

In her acceptance speech, Smith spoke to what the honor means to her:

“I was thinking this morning, when I learned of this honor. What have I done in NYC, what have I given NYC to earn this? But most of all I kept thinking of what NYC has given to me,” she said. “I came here in 1967 from a real rural area of South Jersey. I had just a few dollars in my pocket, and no real prospects. I came here to get a job and to see what I was made of. And I found that the city, with all of its diversities and possibilities, if you’re willing to work, if you maintain your enthusiasm, you’ll make it.”

De Blasio will give way to Eric Adams as Mayor of New York City on January 1st, 2022. But in addition to Smith, his final weeks as mayor has seen him bestowing a key to the city to figures like Spike Lee, Clive Davis and Chuck Schumer.

Why Archbishop Desmond Tutu was beloved by people of all faiths

Occasionally a religious leader comes long who garners universal love and respect from people of all faiths. Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu was one of those leaders, and the world is mourning his passing at age 90.

Tutu will be remembered for his fierce passion for justice combined with his humble, humorous manner. He courageously took on the injustice of apartheid in his home country of South Africa, advocating for non-violent protest against the white supremacist system. He was appointed the head of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission after apartheid ended, which provided a model for the world of restorative justice. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his work on human rights. He gave speeches and wrote books about hope, faith, forgiveness and joy, including one co-written with the Dalai Lama.

His inclusivity and open-hearted approach to all people was an inspiration to all.

Desmond Tutu in his own words: ‘He loved, he laughed, he cried.’

He was a man who endured severe racist oppression, then wrote: “When we see others as the enemy, we risk becoming what we hate. When we oppress others, we end up oppressing ourselves. All of our humanity is dependent upon recognising the humanity in others.”

He offered wisdom to those who have suffered: “We are not responsible for what breaks us, but we can be responsible for what puts us back together again. Naming the hurt is how we begin to repair our broken parts.”

He called for justice and true equality for all: “I am not interested in picking up crumbs of compassion thrown from the table of someone who considers himself my master,” he said. “I want the full menu of rights.”

And called us all to action on that front: “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse, and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.”

He was a deeply religious Christian cleric who embraced people of all faiths, famously writing, “God is not a Christian” and telling Real Leaders:

“It doesn’t matter where we worship or what we call God; there is only one, inter-dependent human family. We are born for goodness, to love – free of prejudice. All of us, without exception. There is greater commonality in our belief systems than we tend to credit, a golden thread expressed in the maxim that one should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself. I don’t believe in the notion of ‘opposing belief systems.’ It would be more accurate to say that human beings have a long history of rationalizing acts of inhumanity on the basis of their own interpretations of the will of God.”

He wasn’t about the noise. In his address at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in 2004, Tutu said: “My father always used to say, ‘Don’t raise your voice. Improve your argument.’ Good sense does not always lie with the loudest shouters, nor can we say that a large, unruly crowd is always the best arbiter of what is right.”

And he was funny. His playful friendship with the Dalai Lama is one for the ages.

His ready, warm smile and the ever-present twinkle in his eye were emblems of what Desmond Tutu offered to the world—universal kindness, genuine forgiveness, a deep well of joy and an unshakeable belief in people’s potential for change.

He shared his faith by continually showering his gifts on all of humanity. May we remember and use them well.

Britney Spears Gives A ‘F*ck You’ To Her Parents: ‘My Family Embarrassed Me And Hurt Me Deeply’

Now that Britney Spears is free from her conservatorship after 13 years, the singer is living life to the fullest. She’s jetted off to a private vacation with her fiancé and posted topless pictures on Instagram just for the hell of it, but she’s also been able to open up more about her conservatorship experience now more than ever. In a recent confessional Instagram post, the singer discussed how her family “deeply” hurt and embarrassed her over the years, saying she’s only now on her way to bouncing back.

After posting a series of prayers on Instagram and writing about her experience with faith over the years, Spears opened up about her music, career, family issues, and her insecurities. The singer has revealed her rigorous work schedule in the past, but she also mentioned that she was in “denial” of her situation because she didn’t want to “cause conflict.” Spears says she has now even lost the drive to make music as “a way of saying ‘F*ck You’” to her family:

“I had an experience three years ago where I stopped believing in God !!!! From every angle I was being hurt for no reason and my family was hurting me […] I screamed alone a lot and I kept all that pain to myself !!!! They say go to the source for healing … the person who hurt you … go to them and tell them … I’ve never gotten to do that. I chose the fake denial ‘everything’s totally fine’ approach because I didn’t want to cause conflict. I was NICE, FAKE and I was absolutely screaming inside. I wanted to be nice but what they did to my heart was unforgivable! I asked for 13 years to perform new songs and remixes of my old songs …. I had two months off in between each show settings for four years in Vegas … and every time I asked I was told “No…” It was a set up to make me fail yet I knew exactly what I wanted my fans to see. […]

So much wasted time to only embarrass me and humiliate me and I guess it seems odd to most now why I don’t even do my music anymore… that’s just the surface issues. People have no idea the awful things that were done to me personally … and after what I’ve been through, I’m scared of people and the business!!!! They really hurt me !!!!! Not doing my music anymore is a way of saying ‘F*ck You’ in a sense when it only actually benefits my family by ignoring my real work […] Honestly my family embarrassed me and hurt me deeply… so tooting my own horn and seeing my past accomplishments reflecting back at me actually helped. To the outside world it must seem like I’m extremely insecure and if people really knew what I went through, I think they would understand COMPLETELY where I’m coming from! It’s a shame though that people don’t like the truth!”

‘Cobra Kai’ Gets Even Better At Crane-Kicking The Generation Gap In A Furiously Fine Season 4

The Karate Kid has been elevating the underdogs for decades, and the franchise continues to reach absurd new heights with each season of Cobra Kai. This show really shouldn’t be so damn good, considering the central conceit: former champs of rival karate dojos simply cannot get along and expend all of their time, energy, money, and sanity attempting to outdo each other because nothing else matters. There’s so much posturing and virtual chest bumping going on, most of the adults are varying degrees of ridiculous, and the younger generation is simply trying to keep their sh*t together with real-life concerns while ducking the flotsam of the warring adults.

The meaning of the word “underdog” keeps shifting, too, with the plot growing bendier in Season 4 of this action-soap opera-comedy. Things do get ugly during moments, but don’t worry, this show isn’t going “dark and gritty.” Instead, it’s all about keeping the developments believable. And right when you think the show might start wearing out its welcome, well, it proves you wrong. I gotta hand it to creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg for once again staying faithful to the spirit of The Karate Kid franchise. They’ve kept things authentic and real here while staying just serious enough about the characters’ struggles. The overall tone stays light, and this season moves past previous hurdles (including Daniel LaRusso’s spiritual crusade and Johnny Lawrence’s beefs with the world) to revolve around the trainwreck of the senseis.

Cobra Kai Season 4
Netflix

Those damn senseis. Currently, four of them are pushing to prove that their methods will churn out the mightiest karate menaces in the Valley. Stepping back for a moment, this sounds so silly, and oftentimes, it truly is, but this show wears a ton of heart on its sleeve along with its badassery.

Cobra Kai, of course, started out (back in 2018 at what was YouTube Red) as an underdog in and of itself, as well as being one of many nostalgia-fueled revivals and reboots and retreads. That’s a trend that feels endemic these days, mostly as shots-in-the-dark with few successes and a lot of cringe (look no further than And Just Like That… for a recent example). Yet this show manages to consistently stick landings by adhering to its own formula and no shortage of training montages and intense face-making between Ralph Macchio’s LaRusso and William Zabka’s Lawrence. We’ve already been though the debates about who was truly the bad guy at that All-Valley Tournament in 1984. Seriously, there’s an oral history and Reddit forums and everything else, all to debate the question of whether that crane kick was illegal.

What I’m saying is this: people are invested in this show. There’s a danger in that because further seasons could potentially ruin what already happened, but rest assured that this baby is still treated in a loving manner by all involved. The writers all appear to adore these characters, and the actors are endlessly game, and so on. And as for that crane kick, illegal or not, that decades-old move set up Johnny and Daniel’s vibes for life. The show has done well at making both dudes look buffoonish at various points, but Season 4 goes there by explicitly referencing said kick. It’s a risky move yet one that audiences have also been waiting to see.

Cobra Kai Crane Kick
Netflix

How that crane kick plays out now, I won’t spoil, but there’s also this crossroads: Daniel and Johnny must now band together against true evil. That’s where Season 3 ended, with Johnny’s newly minted Eagle Fang dojo teaming up with Daniel’s Miyagi-Do because John Kreese (Martin Kove) once again went mad with power after reclaiming the Cobra Kai dojo. Not only that, but Kreese called in reinforcements in the form of Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith), which once again shows that (as with the previous returns of Chozen and Ali) this show’s writers continue to pull from the well when appropriate, and the writers know these characters well.

Almost too well. And I don’t need to tell you too much about this season, really. If you are already a fan, you’ll watch it. If you still haven’t given this show a shot and are on the fence, then the most convincing thing I can say to you is this: Cobra Kai knows what works and keeps doing the thing, so you’ll receive a comforting blanket of stories about characters who stick together, at least against the other team(s). In this round, for example, LaRusso and Lawrence’s opposing teach methods get swapped around and mixed and matched, and there’s much discussion of whether fighting offensively or defensively is more “badass” or “boring,” respectively.

That seemingly simple question fuels an entire season of action and drama. And not only that, but enough of the teens have tweaked their memberships between the three dojos that they’re well equipped at anticipating each other’s fighting styles. It’s like they’re all fighting with themselves, too, both literally and figuratively. It’s fun! And when this acumen reaches the current All Valley Tournament, watch out. In the meantime, I have a few loose ends to mention.

– Ralph Macchio and William Zabka still crush these roles: That’s pretty wild, in and of itself. They’re waxing on and waxing off, and it’s sheer joy to witness. They love this sh*t just as much as the audience, and the show is smart enough to keep them around. There’s no sense of them being shuttled off to pasture. Instead, their proven chemistry continues while remaining firmly entrenched in the younger characters’ arcs.

– The younger actors hold their own. There are too many to adequately mention here, but here are a few of the fantastic performances: Xolo Maridueña still has “future Marvel star” written all over him, and while his role isn’t as meaty this time around, he’s committed to elevating the team of performances; Mary Mouser takes the role of Samantha LaRusso into braver territory; Tanner Buchanan continues his Dylan McKay-lite take as Johnny’s kid, Robby; and Peyton List persists in a standout turn for her portrayal of Tory, who’s got way too much responsibility for a teen while also being one of the fiercest competitors in the community.

Cobra Kai Tory Season 4
Netflix

– Hawk! We’ll revisit a discussion about Eli Moskowitz’s alter-ego (in an upcoming interview with actor Jacob Bertrand) after this season debuts because dare I say this: while I wouldn’t declare Hawk to transforming into the heart and soul of the series (no one character could do so), he embodies much of the contemporary underdog struggle. Hawk’s troubles run far and wide, and he’s (mostly) on the straight and narrow these days while remaining a complicated dude. There’s a lot coming with him, and viewers will be here for it.

Does that about cover it? Well, other than this show (inexplicably) including too much of the worst character (who’s still sticking out like a misfired sore thumb here), this season manages to level up and pave a road toward the future. Oh, and Cobra Kai recently wrapped on Season 5 shooting and there’s a fresh finale cliffhanger that will have you cracking your knuckles for more. Yes, waiting for more will be hard again, but them’s the breaks with a show this good.

Netflix’s ‘Cobra Kai’ returns with Season 4 on December 31.

Latto Takes Kodak Black’s ‘Super Gremlin’ For A Freestyle Spin

Just last week, Latto was parading around with a goat while rocking a jewel-studded bikini holding a goat. You don’t have to think too long about the imagery to get what the Atlanta rapper was trying to say about her rise. But the Uproxx December cover star made it clear in our feature that she’s no fluke and has put in the work since day one to get to where she’s at:

“I’ve been rapping since eight years old… You know how people be like, ‘Oh, I’ve been rapping since I was two years old. Like, my momma put a microphone in my hand and I used to dance in front of the TV?’ No, I’m talking about full-blown, going to the studio, dropping music videos, promoting mixtapes, passing out mixtapes out the trunk of my daddy car. I had a whole career at eight years old. So, it’s the time that I’ve put into it. That’s where people be saying, ‘Oh my God, what is it?’ It’s just I’ve been doing it forever.”

Today, Latto just shared the “Super Gremlin Freestyle,” which rides the beat of Kodak Black’s “Super Gremlin.” As she’s done in the past, Latto totally dominates on this freestyle and asserts the charting status of her album Queen of Da Souf with the line: “Got in my Pop bag just for the hell of it / Now I’m Top 40 but y’all was just laughin’.” And in the video, the jeweled bikini and goat photoshoot comes to life, along with a studio session and bills on bills.

DMX Recorded A Gospel Rap Double Album While Under Constant Surveillance In Arizona

Although DMX’s final album was this year’s haunting Exodus, which featured appearances from Jay-Z and Nas, the Griselda crew, and more, it turns out that there’s another full album from the late, great rap pioneer floating around. Titled Walk With Me Now and You’ll Fly With Me Later, it was a double album recorded in 2008 while DMX lived in Arizona, with one side consisting of his usual gritty rap and the second consisting of profanity-free gospel rap. According to a new feature in Rolling Stone, the album was actually completed, but later shelved in the wake of a police raid of his home.

According to Rolling Stone, while living in Arizona, DMX was subject to a campaign of harassment by the then-Sheriff of Maricopa County. Subjects interviewed said that DMX lived under a state of constant surveillance and was arrested multiple times for relatively minor infractions, most related to traffic incidents or parole violations stemming from his 2007 arrest for animal cruelty. Unfortunately, a stint in prison for those charges left him unable to promote a release of the album, and by the time he was free to do so, the label that had bankrolled it, Bodog Music, had been shut down. A Canadian label called Her Royal Majesty’s Records wound up with the album rights to Walk With Me Now and You’ll Fly With Me Later, but due to DMX’s history, was unwilling to commit resources to a proper release.

Some of the songs have since leaked in low-quality YouTube uploads. The rights bounced around, from Seven Arts Entertainment, which released DMX’s album Undisputed in 2012, to a Canadian businessman named Howard Mann who won the rights at an auction when Seven Arts executives were convicted of tax fraud (maybe Issa Rae was right, after all). Meanwhile, DMX’s estate considers Mann pretty untrustworthy as well, saying through their attorney, “Howard Mann has no authority that we’re aware of and hasn’t shown us anything to reflect that he owns any music that DMX recorded. He has absolutely nothing to do with the estate and, to the extent that he has DMX’s music, the estate has not authorized the use of DMX’s name and likeness.”

You can read the full, long-form essay about DMX’s time in Arizona here.

Rudy Giuliani Is Raging Against ‘Fascist’ Fox News For Banning Him: ‘They Forget Their Friends Pretty Damn Fast!’

What a difference a couple of decades—and one Big Lie—make. In 2001, Time Magazine named then-New York City Mayor its Person of the Year and declared him “Mayor of the World.” Today, he’s persona non grata pretty much everywhere, including at Fox News, and he is not happy about it.

As Raw Story reports, Giuliani appeared on Real America’s Voice (whatever that is) on Monday to bitch about having to appear on Real America’s Voice, as Fox News essentially banned him from its airwaves back in June—though Rudy didn’t even realize it until September, the night before he was supposed to appear on Fox & Friends to observe the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. More than three months later, he’s still not over it, and went off on a rant in which he claimed that Fox News is only on the air in New York City because of him, which he chose to do “against tremendous criticism.”

“So they forget their friends pretty fast,” Giuliani added. “But the thing I resent most is they won’t tell me why. I’m not being told why I’m not allowed on. I’d like to know what it is that I said that they regard as not being true. We take the same position in regard to Dominion [Voting Systems], we’re in the same lawsuit… But it leaves me completely in a quandary to know why they’re playing the kind of fascist game I’m used to with CNN and… I don’t even consider them news sources any longer. They’re basically organs of the Democrat party.”

That Rudy would mention Dominion in his woe-is-me, I-don’t-know-what-I-did complaint against Fox News seems to indicate that he knows exactly why they don’t want him clogging up their airwaves: In March 2021, Dominion Voting Systems—the company behind the voting technology that many of us used to cast our votes in the 2020 presidential election—filed a $1.6 billion defamation suit against Fox News for its insistence on repeatedly claiming, without a shred of evidence, that the 2020 presidential election had been rigged, and blaming that partly on Dominion’s voting technologies.

While Fox initially attempted to push the narrative that by regularly giving airtime to unhinged conspiracy theorists like Giuliani and MyPillow Man Mike Lindell, they were simply trying to tell “both sides” of the election story, they quickly realized how weak that argument was. So they stopped putting Rudy and his fellow Big Lie pushers on the air at all, apparently in the hope of restoring some of their credibility. But in mid-December, a Delaware Superior Court judge denied Fox News’s motion to dismiss the case against them, which legal experts like CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin said could portend that this lawsuit is likely to be a “nightmare” for Fox News.

For his part, Giuliani is also being sued by Dominion for $1.3 billion for aiding and abetting his former BFF Donald Trump is pushing the idea that the election was rigged. While, outwardly, Rudy doesn’t appear to be paying the lawsuit much mind, he and his team are in crisis mode—in part because of Trump’s refusal to pay Giuliani for the legal services he rendered that got him into this mess in the first place. (The former president was also mad at Rudy for his own impeachment… because nothing is ever Donald Trump’s fault.)

You can watch Rudy’s full rant below.

Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ Is Now The First Song To Go No. 1 In Four Separate Years

On last week’s Billboard Hot 100 chart, Mariah Carey’s enduring 1994 classic “All I Want For Christmas Is You” returned to No. 1 for the third holiday season, making it the first song to top the chart during three distinct runs. Now, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is making even more history: The song is once again No. 1 on the new Hot 100 chart, and since the chart is dated January 1, 2022, it is the first No. 1 song of 2022 and the first song to be No. 1 in four separate years (2019 to 2022).

This marks the 50th week that “All I Want For Christmas Is You” has been on the Hot 100 and it’s the first song to ever be No. 1 in its 50th week. Furthermore, Carey herself has now been at No. 1 on the Hot 100 during a record-extending 18 years: 1990 to 2000, 2005 to 2006, 2008, and 2019 to 2022. Carey has now spent 86 total weeks at No. 1, which extends the all-time record.

Meanwhile, it’s also a huge week for The Ronettes, as their 1963 single “Sleigh Ride” is No. 10 on this week’s chart. This is the group’s first time in the top 10 in 58 years and two months, which is a record. Their last top ten came in 1963, when “Be My Baby” hit No. 2.
