Kelly Lee Owens Finds Clarity At ‘Night’ On Her Pulsating New Single

About a month ago, Kelly Lee Owens decided to delay the release of her upcoming album, Inner Song, to late August. She wrote at the time, “We had lots of plans to bring u this album that are now not feasible due to covid-19 & also out of solidarity for the thousands of record stores closing their doors to protect us.” Now, as part of the album’s unexpectedly longer lead-up, Owens has released a new song, “Night.”

Owens says of the propulsive single:

“This track speaks as to how feelings and insights are more accessible to us at nighttime — how the veils are thinner somehow and therefore how we are more able to connect to our hearts true desires. I wanted to release this track as a gift to you during this crazy time, to give a part of my heart to you all.”

Owens previously said of Inner Song, “My creative life and everything I’d worked for up to that point was deeply impacted. I wasn’t sure if I could make anything anymore, and it took quite a lot of courage to get to a point where I could create again. [The album title] really reflects what it felt like to make this record. I did a lot of inner work in the past few years, and this is a true reflection of that.”

Listen to “Night” above.

Inner Song is out 8/28 via Smalltown Supersound. Pre-order it here.

Our Tasting Notes On The Best-Selling Whiskies In The U.S.

The whiskey market has been growing healthily for years now. Like beer, that has led to a wide range of superb craft options springing up in every corner of the country. The thing is, craft whiskey is still relatively niche and locally-driven. When you do see a smaller whiskey brand on the mainstream market, it often means they were bought out or signed a distribution deal. Even still, the vast, vast majority of whiskey sold in the U.S. comes from the big-name brands that have instant label recognition.

You probably already know the names of all the best-selling whiskeys in America, is what we’re saying. Here’s a better question: Do you know how the best-selling whiskeys in the U.S. taste? Do they live up to the hype? Are we crazy for buying them en masse? We decided today was the day to find out.

The whiskeys listed below are the ten that industry watchers name as the “best-selling” in the U.S. market. There are some “huh?” whiskeys on this list (they might be different for you, depending on where you live) next to old-school, well-known classics. After sharing what distillers and blenders say these whiskeys should taste like, we compare them with our notes and rate whether they hold up.

10. Johnnie Walker Scotch Whiskey

ABV: 40%
Distillery: Various Scottish Distilleries (Diageo)
Average Price: $38.99

Distiller’s Tasting Notes:

“Nose: Take in the luxurious scent of rich and tropical dark fruits with hints of sweet vanilla. Palate: Savor the depth of flavor developed from maturation in oak casks, combined with creamy toffee notes that come from grain whiskies. Finish: This iconic whisky delivers a smooth and warming smoke finish, characteristic of all Johnnie Walker whiskies.”

Our Take:

We’re using Johnnie Black for this exercise since A) it’s blended as a sipping whisky and B) it’s one of the best-selling whiskies in the whole damn world. Does it hold up? For the most part, yes. There’s certainly a sense of slightly tropical fruits and vanilla but it’s not pronounced. There are echoes of smoke, oak, and malts with a clear sweetness that you could argue is toffee. None of it overpowers or really takes you deep into those senses though.

Overall, this is a very easy-drinking entry-level blended scotch that works perfectly in a highball with a nice, fizzy mineral water.

9. Black Velvet Canadian Whisky

ABV: 40%
Distillery: Black Velvet Distillery, Lethbridge, AB (Heaven Hill)
Average Price: $10.99

Distiller’s Tasting Notes:

“Remarkably smooth with hints of caramel, vanilla, coconut, and rye spiciness.”

Our Take:

“Remarkably” is a strong word to use here. Full disclosure, I have a soft spot for this Canadain whisky. My grandmother’s go-to drink was Pepsi and Rye with Black Velvet, and we shared a lot of them. Rye spice and coconut definitely stand out when BV is taken uncut. The caramel has a grainy and slightly saccharine edge while the vanilla is there but a bit muddled by the alcohol.

This is a hot whisky that’s not for the faint of heart if taken straight. On the rocks, it’s surprisingly tolerable. Cut with cola, this going to go down almost too easily.

8. Evan Williams Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

ABV: 43%
Distillery: Heaven Hill, Bardstown, KY
Average Price: $13.99

Distiller’s Tasting Notes:

“Nose: Light with deep vanilla and mint. Taste: Notes of oak, brown sugar, and caramel. Finish: Medium to long.”

Our Take:

This whiskey really does hit the marks it lays out. There’s a clear sense of bourbon vanilla and the mint does tingle a bit in the background. The sugar is probably the most prominent note as the oak char adds a slight dryness. The finish is warm, a little spicy, and certainly lingers (the classic “Kentucky hug”).

This is an easy shot with a beer back at any dive bar happy hour. It works on the rocks too or as a Mint Julep base. It’s also a lot cheaper than Jack if you want to cut it with a sugary soda or fizzy water.

7. Seagram’s 7 Crown American Blended Whiskey

ABV: 40%
Distillery: Seven Crown Distilling Company, Norwalk, CT (Diageo)
Average Price: $14.99

Distiller’s Tasting Notes:

“Nose: Alluring, clean, and crisp with a hint of citrus. Taste: Smooth sweet taste. Finish: Creamy vanilla finish.”

Our Take:

It’s hard to get behind these tasting notes, to be honest. While Seagram’s 7 is definitely a palatable blended whiskey, it has some rough edges. There’s a lot of vanilla that, when added to 7-Up, creates a sort of boozy cream soda. Admittedly, that quality has its charms. But on its own, that vanilla is covered up by hot and astringent alcohol with more of a plastic butterscotch wrapper edge than anything else.

7&7 is a classic cocktail for a reason. Stick with that and don’t sip this neat.

6. Maker’s Mark Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

ABV: 45%
Distillery: Maker’s Mark Distillery, Loreto, KY (Beam Suntory)
Average Price: $29.99

Distiller’s Tasting Notes:

“Aroma: Woody oak, caramel, vanilla, and wheat prevail in the nose. Taste: Sweet and balanced with caramel, vanilla, and fruity essences. Finish: Smooth and subtle.”

Our Take:

Oak is a great place to start with Maker’s. There’s always a fair amount upfront that carries straight on through to the end. Classic notes of vanilla and caramel dominate as a mild sense of rye spiciness and dark fruit linger.

Thanks to those spices and fruit, this works well in Manhattans. It’s also very quaffable as a highball with some good mineral water and a lime wedge.

5. Jameson Irish Whiskey

ABV: 40%
Distillery: Irish Distillers (Pernod Ricard)
Average Price: $29.99

Distiller’s Tasting Notes:

“Nose: Smooth and mellow. Taste: The perfect balance of spicy, nutty, and vanilla notes with hints of sweet sherry and exceptional smoothness.”

Our Take:

Mellow is a great describer for this triple distilled Irish tipple. For the most part, this sip lives up to its promises. There’s a clear sense of vanilla thanks to the ex-bourbon barrels. The spiciness and nuttiness are in the background with a note of florals. The plummy end is subtle but there.

This is a very easy whiskey to drink. Mineral water, ginger ale, on the rocks, a shot, or cocktail base, it’s really dealer’s choice.

4. Jim Beam Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

ABV: 40%
Distillery: Jim Beam Distillery, Clermont, KY (Beam Suntory)
Average Price: $17.84

Distiller’s Tasting Notes:

“Aroma: Oaky vanilla, spicy backdrop. Flavor: Medium-bodied, mellow hints of caramel, and vanilla.”

Our Take:

Yeah. This is a classic and simple bourbon that gets the job done. It’s the bedrock for which a lot of other bourbons are built: caramel, oak, vanilla, mild spice, alcohol warmth, maybe a brief nod to an apple orchard, leading to a short finish with a little more oak.

This is a great utility bourbon to have on hand. While we would use more refined versions of Beam’s line for cocktails, this pretty much works for every other drinking variation.

3. Fireball Cinnamon Whisky

ABV: 33%
Distillery: Various Canadian Distilleries (Sazerac Company)
Average Price: $17.99

Company’s Tasting Notes:

“…Imagine what it feels like to stand face-to-face with a fire-breathing dragon who just ate a whisky barrel full of spicy cinnamon.”

Our Take:

Red Hots covered in cinnamon syrup is the best way to describe this. It’s sweet and, yes, cinnamon-y but more in an artificial flavor way. The lower ABV does help it be a little easier to shoot when last call comes around. But just beware of the sugar crash the next day.

2. Crown Royal Canadian Blended Whisky

ABV: 40%
Distillery: Gimli, Manitoba & Amherstburg, Ontario (Diageo)
Average Price: $28.99

Distiller’s Tasting Notes:

“Nose: Rich and robust, with slight hints of vanilla and fruit. Palate: Delicately smooth and creamy with hints of oak and the sweet flavor of vanilla. Finish: Long and lingering.”

Our Take:

This hits pretty close to what the distillers say. There’s a subtle sense of orchard fruit, honey, and vanilla. Oak is definitely there with an almost dry sense of char and, dare we say, bitterness? There’s a slightly rough edge to the alcohol warmth that’s not harsh enough to be off-putting.

Again, this is a great utility whisky to have around. Try it on the rocks and go from there.

1. Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey

ABV: 40%
Distillery: Jack Daniel’s Distillery, Lynchburg, TN (Brown-Forman)
Average Price: $24.99

Distiller’s Tasting Notes:

“Balance of sweet and oaky flavor.”

Our Take:

It’s kind of hilarious that “balance of sweet and oaky flavor” is all that Jack Daniel’s puts out there. Respect to the God. There’s a definite sense of wood, vanilla, caramel, and bananas to go with those understated distiller notes. The wood carries through to the end with a slight hint of spice, florals, and more banana as the dram ends pretty abruptly.

Swig it from the bottle like a rock star, shoot it at a happy hour, drink it on the rocks, Jack and Coke, Lynchburg Lemonade, Jack and Ginger, Jack and Soda … there are a lot of applications for this one.

Everything Coming To And Leaving Netflix In May 2020, Including ‘Space Force’ And A Jerry Seinfeld Special

There’s no telling how long our current situation will last, but Netflix is here for you during those long stretches of self-quarantine boredom. This month, several truckloads of new content will arrive, including new series from The Office dream team and Ryan Murphy. In addition, a romcom-action flick originally meant for wide release in theaters will make its debut in your living rooms, and another season of the highly bingeable Dead To Me, starring Christina Applegate, will be here to complicate homicide-matters. If that’s not enough, a series called Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics will feature celebrities (including Nick Offerman) making admissions about their hallucinogenic highs and lows. There are also several new stand-up comedy specials, and a whole lot more.

Here’s everything coming to (and leaving) Netflix this May.

Netflix

Space Force (Netflix series streaming 5/29)

The Office fans can still find all nine seasons of the beloved comedy series on Netflix, but the streaming giant wanted more of the same vibe, and by god, they’ve got it now. Space Force sees The Office creator Greg Daniels re-team with Steve Carell, and this time, he’s managing people who send folks into space. In other words, bye bye, Scranton, Pennsylvania, and hello to new frontiers (apparently focused in Colorado). The stellar cast includes John Malkovich, Lisa Kudrow, and Ben Schwartz.

The Lovebirds (Paramount Pictures film streaming 5/22)

Originally scheduled for theaters, this high-concept, action-rom-com stars Issa Rae (Insecure) and the abs of Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley, the upcoming The Eternals), who accidentally stumble into a murder while on a date. For reasons that shall be left unexplained here, they’re soon off on a wild ride to clear their own names by finding a real killer. Can their relationship survive this strange night? The outcome looks fairly predictable, but all successful romcoms ride high on the chemistry of their leads, and there appears to be no shortage of that quality in supply here.

Netflix

Jerry Seinfeld: 23 Hours To Kill (Netflix comedy special streaming 5/5)

With his second stand-up special for Netflix, Jerry Seinfeld — whose Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee is still cruising after eleven seasons — sets out to continue precision-crafting his humor about nothing at all. He’ll mine the commonplace and everyday life once more, and although the series title suggests a long runtime, this puppy will be coming at you for one lean and mean hour as filmed from NYC’s Beacon Theatre.

Hollywood (Netflix series streaming 5/1)

Ryan Murphy of Glee and American Horror Story is back on Netflix (The Politician is barely in the rear-view mirror) with a new limited series alongside co-creator Ian Brennan. This time around, Murphy’s tackling post-World War II Hollywood and a group of aspiring actors and filmmakers who will sacrifice anything to see their name in lights. The show will confront race, gender, and sexuality biases of Tinseltown’s Golden Age and stars Samara Weaving, Dylan McDermott, David Corenswet, Darren Criss, and Jeremy Pope, among the ensemble cast.

DaBaby Addresses The Criticism That He Never Switches His Flow

Ever since blowing up in 2019 with two hit albums, DaBaby has been fielding customer complaints that suggest he’s a one-trick pony, unable to switch up his full-auto Kalashnikov flow. While he touched on the topic on his latest album, Blame It On Baby, he largely continued to use the same cadence, leading even more listeners to criticize his supposed inability to slow down his high-speed rhyme rate. Today, on a special quarantine edition of The Breakfast Club, he finally cleared the air, suggesting that if he changed up too quickly, fans would still have negative complaints.

“You gotta gradually pull people in different directions,” he explains. “As far as switching the flow, I have no problem running circles around any one of these n****s.” As to why he hasn’t done so yet, he says, “I couldn’t find myself entertaining that. I could joke about it, like I joke about everything else… but I could never take that sh*t too serious.” He elaborates that, “If I switch it too quick, you ain’t gon’ like it… When you got something going, you would be a fool to step on your own toes and go left with it.”

DaBaby says he could easily make a conscious record like J. Cole but suggests patience on fans’ parts. Clearly, he believes he has a lot more to offer, but it may take a while for us to get it.

Las Vegas’ Life Is Beautiful Festival Has Been Canceled For 2020

It’s been a little over a month since Ultra and SXSW became the first major festivals of 2020 to cancel their events due to the coronavirus pandemic. Ever since, festivals like Boston Calling and Governors Ball have also been canceled. Meanwhile, events like Coachella and Lovers And Friends have been postponed for a later date, though the mayors of both LA and New York don’t believe large events will be able to return until next year. Now, Las Vegas’ fall festival Life Is Beautiful had the same vision and has decided to completely cancel its 2020 iteration.

Life Is Beautiful made the cancelation announcement Wednesday. The organizers cited the health and safety of attendees, employees, and performers alike as the reason for the decision. Life Is Beautiful organizer Justin Weniger said the festival’s message is more than important to maintain in times like these:

“It’s clear the health and economic hardships from the COVID-19 crisis will impact us all for some time to come. In light of this, we made the determination to re-examine the role Life is Beautiful plays in the community and how we can put our resources, creativity and time into doing what we always set out to do: inspire and bring together a community. From the beginning, Life is Beautiful has been a year-round, aspirational mantra that materializes into a festival that unites visitors from around the world. For this year, that festival won’t happen but there has never been a more important time to remind us all that life is indeed beautiful. That is what we are going to do, in ways large and small.”

Sharing a full statement on social media, the festival wrote: “Life is Beautiful because of you. Thank you for your continued love and support. We’ll dance in the streets again soon.”

Last year’s Life Is Beautiful iteration saw headlining performances from big names like Billie Eilish and Chance The Rapper. While the festival is forgoing its 2020 event in order to focus on new initiatives, Life Is Beautiful plans to make a full return in 2021.

A24 Is Auctioning The Furby From ‘Uncut Gems’ And ‘Midsommar’ Flower Dress For Charity

The bedazzled Furby from Uncut Gems. The flower dress from Midsommar. The titular light (minus the house) from The Lighthouse. Those are only some of the items that will be available in the A24-launched A24 Auctions, which benefits New Yorkers impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. The auction, which begins at 12 p.m. EST today (April 22), also includes items from Eighth Grade, Euphoria (the Zendaya-starring HBO series produced by A24), and Hereditary — I would be concerned for anyone who buys a prop from that movie (don’t worry, it’s not the head), but at least the money is going to a good cause.

“Auctions will take place in April and May, and will be held online,” the New York Times reports. “A24, which is based in New York, will give the proceeds to four local organizations: the FDNY Foundation, which supports the New York City Fire Department; the hunger-relief nonprofit Food Bank for New York City; the public health-care organization NYC Health + Hospitals; and the Queens Community House, which provides services to children and adults throughout Queens.”

Hereditary, Uncut Gems, and Midsommar are three of A24’s five highest-grossing titles, so expect items from those films to get expensive quickly. Hopefully more props gets added soon — I, for one, am willing to fork over big bucks for the pie from A Ghost Story.

To place a bid, head to A24 Auctions.

It Looks Like Ariana Grande And Lady Gaga Finally Made A Song Together

Lady Gaga has collaborated with some major music industry players in her day, like Justin Timberlake, Tony Bennett, and Beyonce, among others. Now it looks like she has added another high-profile pop superstar to that list: Ariana Grande apparently makes an appearance on Gaga’s upcoming album, Chromatica.

Pre-order links for the album are live now, and on most of them, the tracklist information on the album art is blurred out. However, the Target page for the Target-exclusive CD has an non-redacted label that reveals the tracklist. The fourth track is titled “Rain On Me,” and it features Ariana Grande. The tracklist also notes that the album has collaborations with Elton John and Blackpink as well. As of this post, the page is still live with the unedited art.

If this ends up being the final tracklist of the album, this actually won’t be Gaga’s first collaboration with John: The two previously teamed up for “Hello, Hello,” which appears in the 2011 movie Gnomeo & Juliet. However, the version of the song included on the film’s soundtrack does not feature Gaga.

This news comes shortly after Grande wished Gaga a happy birthday, writing, “Happy birthday to a literal angel that has changed my life in many ways.”

Check out the reported Chromatica tracklist below.

1. “Chromatica”
2. “Alice”
3. “Stupid Love”
4. “Rain On Me” with Ariana Grande
5. “Free Woman”
6. “Fun Tonight”
7. “Chromatica II”
8. “911”
9. “Plastic Doll”
10. “Sour Candy” with Blackpink
11. “Enigma”
12. “Replay”
13. “Chromatica III”
14. “Sine From Above” with Elton John

The ‘Killing Eve’ Kill Of The Week: Death By Clowns

Bring in the clowns.

Villanelle went full Joker in the latest episode of Killing Eve, donning a particularly stylish clown suit to murder some poor schmuck at a kid’s birthday party. Of course, there was more to the job than just balloon animals and kill shots. Villanelle’s got ambition, and her latest assignment was meant to prove she could handle more than just offing randos whenever the call came.

She… didn’t do so hot. Let’s browse the crime scene to figure out why.

The Clown Kill

Villanelle spent most of this episode bargaining her way to the top. Between meetings with her mentor Dasha and a surprise visit by her former handler Konstantin, she was constantly reminded of the power people still hold over her. So, to grab a bit back for herself, she demands a promotion. And some damn boundaries from these Russian squatters.

AMC

What Villanelle really wants — besides good water pressure and an apartment with high ceilings — is to be a keeper, a position higher up than both of her managers. If you’ll recall, Keepers are the only ones within the organization that know the true identities of the mysterious Twelve, so that title change would grant Villanelle an unbelievable amount of power. But first, she’s got to prove she’s management material. Enter: Felix, a string-bean with a homicidal streak. He killed some a**holes for bullying his boyfriend, managed to take out a few family members in the resulting car crash, and voila, he’s now an assassin-in-training.

AMC

And he’s lucked out because Villanelle really is the best. Just ask her.

AMC

The two bond over their abysmal love lives, and we get a rare glimpse into Villanelle’s emotional turmoil. It’s easy to forget she’s a murder-happy sociopath when she’s so obviously broken up over the way things ended with Eve.

AMC

Because the kill is taking place at a children’s birthday party, Villanelle and Felix must dress the part. The part here: Pennywise, but make it fashionable.

AMC

Villanelle is just here to supervise, which means she gives Felix some useful advice about what area of the throat to slit first before sending him on his way. Meanwhile, she inflicts traumatic memories that will forever be associated with clowns and the art of balloon-shaping on some poor youngsters.

AMC

Things begin to take a while, so Villanelle heads inside, only to find Felix scrambling in a pool of blood on the bathroom floor, trying to beat his mark to death. It’s not the clean, easy kill Villanelle was hoping for, and Felix doesn’t improve the situation when he explains the reason for the mess.

AMC

Villanelle quickly shoots the mark in the back of the head, ending the pair’s struggle, and it seems she might let Felix off the hook for his first mistake on the job. We hope she will, because Felix is clearly a troubled kid who shouldn’t be in this line of work, and he seemed to share a bond with Villanelle earlier in the episode. But this is the same woman who tried to murder the love of her life just one season earlier, so yeah, she shoots Felix too and leaves someone else to handle the bodies. That “someone else” will probably be the kids. Worst. Birthday. Ever.

AMC

It’s the silly-yet-macabre murder we’ve come to expect from this show, one that seems to delight in uncomfortable juxtapositions, but there’s more to this scene than just Villanelle’s iconic clown outfit. We’ve witnessed the character begin to make moves, laying out exactly what she wants and accepting the path she has to take to get there. Is she motivated by the need for more power? Does she want to know the identities of The Twelve so she can assassinate them? That was her plan in season one after all.

But just as quickly as she begins to form a tangible goal, she sabotages herself, letting her impatience, ego, and apathy get the better of her. The fact that she can so easily dispose of Felix proves two things about Villanelle’s character. First, she’ll sacrifice anything and anyone to get what she wants. Whether that’s the freedom to live life according to her rules, a doomed relationship, or a way out of a mandatory babysitting exercise. Human life means very little to Villanelle and that’s been a constant for her character since the show’s first season. What’s more interesting is the fact that she can so easily give up on her own goal. Obviously, she failed this test which will probably make becoming a Keeper that much harder — if it’s even possible at this point. Villanelle had a chance to prove her worth, her maturity, her readiness to become more than a hired gun, and she quite flippantly threw it away the moment things weren’t going according to her plan. She’s selfish, obviously, but is that lack of foresight going to be her downfall this season? We’ll have to wait and see.

Eminem Is Donating Cups Of His ‘Mom’s Spaghetti’ To Detroit Hospital Workers

As the coronavirus crisis winds on, the frontline healthcare workers providing care to patients — of both COVID-19 and other, more mundane medical maladies — have become more important than ever. Eminem — who recently celebrated his 12th year of sobriety — has joined the chorus of voices praising medical workers, as well as providing them with a more solid show of his appreciation, inspired by one of his most iconic lyrics.

“Mom’s Spaghetti” has become the dish most associated with the rapper, after the fan-favorite intro of his 8 Mile soundtrack hit, “Lose Yourself.” Em’s opened pop-up restaurants at festivals serving the signature dish and yesterday, delivered several bowls of Mom’s Spaghetti to workers at Detroit’s DMC Hospital to ensure they stay well-fed through their shifts. Fans on social media shared photos of the the cups, which bored the message “Thank you, frontline caregivers.”

The gift was similar to ones provided by other hip-hop stars, including Cardi B, who provided 20,000 meal supplements to medical workers in New York, while Kanye West donated a quarter million Chick Fil-A meals to those in need. Meanwhile, Jay-Z and Rihanna donated $2 million to provide daycare, food, and learning materials to healthcare workers’ and first responders’ children.

Kyler Murray And Bryce Harper Headline A $1 Million Fortnite Tournament On Twitch

Many athletes have, like so many others, turned to video games as an escape and form of entertainment as they deal with lockdowns and pro sports on hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic.

To fill the time, ESPN has put together tournaments to pit players against each other in NBA 2K and Madden, but pro athletes have gaming interests far beyond just the sports genre. Games like Fortnite, Call of Duty, and others are wildly popular among athletes, and they like to compete in those games as well. On Wednesday, Twitch Rivals will broadcast the SuperGames Finals, pitting 20 teams against each other in Fortnite, with a prize pool of $1 million being divvied up to charities.

Each team features a pair of Twitch streamers who drafted two athletes to their team — some athletes went through a qualifying tournament, while others were invited straight to the Finals.
