One Of Nirvana Leader Kurt Cobain’s Guitars Sold At Auction For Over Half A Million Dollars Despite Being ‘Unplayable’

The late Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain left behind an unquantifiable legacy, but his tools for doing so carry a substantial price tag. In October 2019, the cardigan worn by Cobain during his 1993 MTV: Unplugged set sold for $334,000. Julien’s Auctions sold a “smashed and autographed” 1973 Fender Mustang played by Cobain for $486,400 last fall.

And Julien’s Auctions was at it again over the weekend.

“Sold for $595,900. A lefty black Fender Stratocaster electric guitar, smashed by Kurt Cobain during Nirvana’s Nevermind era and signed to the body by all three band members,” the auction house captioned an Instagram post. “Sold in Julien’s Auctions ‘Music Icons’ at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City, May 19th – 21st and on julienslive.com.”

According to several outlets such as Billboard, Entertainment Weekly, and People, the guitar was initially listed at and estimated to go for $60,000.

“Beyond being played by Cobain before he smashed it, the reassembled but unplayable guitar was signed by all three members of Nirvana — Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl — along with additional inscriptions to Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees) by Cobain that read: ‘Hell-o Mark! Love, Your Pal, Kurdt Kobain / Washed up rockstar,’” People relayed, citing Julien’s Auctions listing.

During the same “Music Icons” auction, Julien’s Auctions also sold an oversized Nevermind promotional poster for $10,400 as well as an autographed setlist “believed to have been handwritten by” Grohl for $50,800. The setlist was for a Nirvana performance at OK Hotel in Seattle on April 17, 1991.

Chlöe Showed Off Her Body In A Joyous Vacation Video And Fans Are Showering Her With Appreciation

Even with fans making all kinds of out-of-pocket comments about her, Chlöe hasn’t been shy about showing off her body since starting her solo career with the unapologetic video for “Have Mercy.” Since then, she’s met every critical comment with another carefree moment reinforcing her self-love — and doubled down on displaying her assets, whether those commenters like it or not.

So it makes sense that after she had a booming busy season that included her controversial appearance in Swarm, the release of her first-ever solo album, and the tour for that album, she’s taking a vacation. She shared a compilation video from her time in paradise (it looks a lot like Hawaii) on social media, and once again bared nearly all with a series of skimpy bikinis that showed off her curves as she surfed, lounged, and soaked up the sun during her island getaway.

The difference is, it appears to be sinking in that she’s not going to let the trolls shake her confidence, so instead, the majority of the comments are praising her, congratulating her on taking some time for herself, and generally loving the look she gave behind the curtain of her rest and relaxation time.

Jon Hamm Helped A Missouri Senate Candidate Create A Brilliantly Surgical Takedown Of Josh Hawley’s Hilariously Dumb ‘Manhood’ Crusade

Sen. Josh Hawley, the MAGA “laughingstock” and “fleeing coward” as branded by his Kansas City hometown paper, will never live down his insurrectionist fist-pumping and cowardly running on January 6. Hawley has somehow also been insisting that American men simply are not masculine enough these days, so of course he decided to write a book called Manhood: The Masculine Virtues America Needs. The book has been both review bombed and lambasted, and it’s awfully silly to stress one’s own alleged masculinity so much because that effort tends to have a counter effect. And if you’re ready to hear this obsession be called out as BS, then Jon Hamm is here to help.

The man who embodied Don Draper surely knows a thing of two about toxic masculinity, so Hamm lent his voice to an ad for Democratic Senate candidate and Marine veteran Lucas Kunce, who walks the walk. As tweeted by Morning Joe co-host Joe Scarborough, the ad paints a portrait of how “manhood really looks.” The ad perfectly times some of Hawley’s most infamous “hits” (including the insurrection sprint) with damning voiceovers from Hamm, including the following: “In Missouri, you can’t fake courage. We’re the ‘Show Me State.’ Courage is something you have to show us.”

Hamm then effortlessly guides us through how “manhood” is shown through deeds like serving in the Marines, rather than through mere words or by controlling other people (i.e., women) through abortion bans. The actor then concludes, “If you wanna be told about ‘Manhood,’ some guy wrote a book about it. But if you want someone to show you courage, send Lucas Kunce to the U.S. Senate.”

It’s a damn effective ad that is much more convincing at defining “manhood” than Hawley’s curious insistence that he’s full of testosterone or Tucker Carlson’s testicle-tanning montage. Imagine that.

‘The View’s Whoopi Goldberg Surprised Sunny Hostin By Giving Her A Lap Dance On Live TV: ‘It’s All Like This’

In case anyone needed proof that these two The View co-hosts are still close friends after the Fartgate “controversy,” Whoopi Goldberg kicked off the week by giving Sunny Hostin a lap dance on Monday’s morning episode.

The raunchy display took place during a panel discussion on the surprising large amount of people who “cheat” during bachelor or bachelorette parties. A recent report put the number as high as 70%. However, The View ladies took issue with some of the methodology. Lap dances were considered a form of cheating, and Hostin didn’t agree with that categorization.

“I said during our Hot Topics meeting that lap dancing isn’t cheating, but come to think of it, I’ve never seen a lap dance, so maybe it is cheating?” Hostin revealed, and that’s when Whoopi struck.

Via Entertainment Weekly:

“Would you like to see?” Goldberg asked, approaching Hostin while the audience erupted with applause. She proceeded to shimmy around a seated Hostin while narrating the entire thing.

“First I’m looking at you, okay? And then I start to turn, and then it’s all like this, and then it’s like that,” Goldberg said as cohost Sara Haines filmed the whole thing on her phone and Ana Navarro stood up to clap along. “And then it’s me going down over here, and then I go back on the side.”

What was Hostin’s view on lap dances after getting a very personal demonstration from Whoopi Goldberg?

“That’s cheating,” Hostin said multiple times while still trying to compose herself. “That’s cheating!”

‘The Bear’ Star Jeremy Allen White Was On A ‘Gross’ Diet To Get Jacked For His A24 Wrestling Movie

In the great history of Celebrities With Insane Diets to Prepare For a Role, having to eat waffles and turkey patties isn’t that bad. But it wasn’t much fun for Jeremy Allen White, either. The Bear star plays Kerry Von Erich in A24’s The Iron Claw, a biopic from Martha Marcy May Marlene director Sean Durkin about the Von Erich family of wrestlers. His process to prepare for the film involved eating a lot of food, a lot of the time.

“Like, never stopping,” Allen White told Esquire. “In the morning, I would have waffles, almond butter. In the middle of the day, I was eating turkey patties and avocado all the time. It’s really just gross. You’re trying to consume as much as you possibly can, and, to be honest, you don’t feel great. I was training as well, but, I don’t know, trying to get that big, it’s no way to live.”

Unless you’re Zac Efron.

“Zac’s a maniac,” Allen White said about his co-star. “He’s so focused and knowledgeable on training, diet, all that. In terms of a physical transformation, I think he kind of blew us all out of the water. He looks really amazing.” All those almond butter sandwiches (the bread is waffles) really paid off.

The Iron Claw is expected to come out later this year.

Dua Lipa Recreated The ‘Barbie’ Trailer To Tease ‘Dance The Night,’ Her Shimmering New Song For The Movie

Barbie is firmly affixed in the pop culture zeitgeist well before its July theatrical release. Part of its growing lore is Dua Lipa’s rumored-and-ultimately-confirmed involvement.

In early April, Lipa confirmed her role in the Barbie cast as “a mermaid.” The same day, UK tabloid the Daily Mail reported that Lipa would record the theme song for Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated live-action Barbie movie. Lipa’s representatives declined to comment at that time.

Lipa spoke for herself today, May 22. The three-time Grammy-winning pop supernova posted a snippet across her social channels teasing that “Dance The Night” will arrive this Friday, May 26. The shimmering single soundtracks Lipa recreating the opening shot of the second Barbie teaser trailer from early April, where Barbie steps out of her fluffy heels to reveal her permanently-arched feet.

In the teaser trailer, we didn’t see above Barbie’s legs, but Lipa’s teaser clip shows Lipa blowing a kiss to the camera.

“The Barbie has a song coming this week… FRIDAY MIDNIGHT BST,” Lipa captioned the post. Donatella Versace commented on Instagram, “She’s a Versace Barbie [winking emoji, butterfly emoji].”

Lipa and Versace co-designed a women’s collection set to debut tomorrow, May 23, in Cannes, France, where Lipa has already debuted her “sweetheart,” Romain Gavras, at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

Barbie is due out July 21. “To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken,” the official synopsis reads under the teaser trailer.

The Gerwig-directed movie stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken, respectively. The A-list cast is rounded out by the likes of Helen Mirren, John Cena, Will Ferrell, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Michael Cena, Kate McKinnon, America Ferrera, Alexandra Shipp, and more still.

18-year-old took her college savings and bought the restaurant where she was a dishwasher

Eighteen year old Samantha Frye has traded college life for entrepreneurship, and she has no regrets.

Frye began working at Rosalie’s Restaurant in Strasburg, Ohio at 16 as a dishwasher, working up the ranks as a kitchen prep, server, then line cook. All while working a second job, sometimes third job.

After graduating high school, Frye started college at Ohio State with plans of studying business or environmental engineering. But when she came back to work a shift at Rosalie’s for winter break, an opportunity arose—the owners had planned to sell the restaurant.

“I was thinking that maybe [buying] was something I wanted to do,” she told News 5 Cleveland. “I had savings because I was saving for college, so I had quite a bit of money saved away. And I was like, I could possibly do this.”

Frye acted on that gut feeling, and used her college funds to buy Rosalie’s. Now she spends every day at her new business, either in the kitchen, on the floor or in the office meeting with sales reps.

Though Fyre’s mother, Brandi Beitzel, confessed to USA Today that she wasn’t initially “on board” with her daughter abandoning college plans, over time she became very “proud” of her for forging her own path, and applauded her “drive and ambition.”

That sentiment is echoed both by Rosalie’s regulars and staff, who are amazing at the young woman’s drive and confidence.

“I just really think she’s a great example of a young lady that is following her dreams and doing what she loves,” said Leanna Gardner, an employee.

It’s no secret that there are significantly less students attending college—down by about a million since the start of the pandemic. And while there are no doubt potential long term collective consequences to that, with exorbitantly high student loan rates, it’s easy to see why young adults would avoid massive debt for careers that don’t require a college degree.

Luckily, there are more efforts to make college an affordable option being made nationwide, like offering a free two years worth of college to graduating students.

And as Frye is proving by example—not going to college is certainly not a death sentence for one’s future. There are many ways to plant seeds for success. Honestly, college or no college, no matter which path is taken, there will likely be more uncertainty than there are guarantees. Perhaps the best bet then is trust those pings of intuition.

“You don’t need college to make a decent living, and I think that’s what a lot of people think nowadays,” Frye attests. “Follow your instinct, honestly. If it feels right, just do it.”

Headliner Lil Wayne Got To The Metro Metro Festival In Montreal So Late, He Only Performed For 15 Minutes

Frank Ocean isn’t the only headliner to get cut off by curfew lately. Lil Wayne recently disappointed fans in Montreal by only performing a 15-minute headlining set at the Metro Metro Festival. According to XXL, Wayne was set to headline the festival on May 19 with an hour-long set from 10-11, but per a statement issued by the festival’s organizers on Instagram, he didn’t arrive to festival grounds until 10:45.

Performers getting cut off by curfew is becoming something of a recurring theme in the music world. Frank Ocean’s headlining performance at Coachella was derailed by an injury on the first weekend that forced organizers to scramble to melt a portable ice rink that was to be used in the performance, pushing back his set for over half an hour. Then, the set was cut short by curfew, leaving fans disappointed and disgruntled as they left the festival grounds. Frank was subsequently removed from the second weekend with Blink-182 upgraded to headliner status.

Lil Wayne recently wrapped up his Welcome To Tha Carter Tour, during which he was joined onstage by surprise guests like Chance The Rapper and Wayne’s longtime protege Drake. Later this year, Wayne is said to be releasing ColleGrove 2 with 2 Chainz, so stay tuned for a release date.

Noel Gallagher Wishes He Could Redo Meeting David Bowie Because He Was Too ‘High And Pissed’ To Remember It

Noel Gallagher said “never say never” to a potential Oasis reunion, but he will unfortunately never get the chance to redo a particular moment from his past.

Gallagher recently participated in The Big Issue‘s “Letter To My Younger Self” series, and he was asked which moment he’d want to relive from any period in his life. He responded with two: His 50th birthday party and meeting David Bowie.

“The other time would be the night I went to see David Bowie and Morrissey at Wembley Arena in the ’90s. I was high and pissed. Then before Bowie came on, somebody came up to me and said, ‘Would you like to come and meet David?’” Gallagher told the publication.

He continued, “I was taken to see David Bowie in his dressing room. And I have no recollection of it whatsoever. I remember walking in, and he was putting on makeup in a mirror and that’s it. He’s up there with John Lennon for me, and I have no idea what we said when I met him. If I could go back, I would appreciate it so much more. I’d tell him what he meant to me growing up, and how much he means to me now, and I’d tell him, ‘I’m gonna rip you off to f*ck when you’re dead, you know.”

Bowie died in January 2016 at 69 years old “after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer,” a statement explained at the time (as relayed by People).

Elsewhere in Gallagher’s The Big Issue feature, the former Oasis star and current frontman of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds shared that he “had no intention of joining [Oasis] but fate took over” and explained he “never knew what mood [his brother and Oasis bandmate] Liam [Gallagher] was going to turn up in.”

Is ‘White Men Can’t Jump’ Star Jack Harlow A Better Rapper, Actor, Or Basketball Player?

After months of promotion, apprehension, speculation, and debate, Hulu’s remake of White Men Can’t Jump was released on Friday, bringing director Calmatic’s interpretation of a 30-year-old classic to living rooms across the country.

A lot of the discussion revolved around the film’s star, Jack Harlow, in his first-ever movie role, which required him to do double duty as a fast-talking, hot-shooting former D1 player who teams up with Sinqua Walls to hustle enough 2-on-2 pickup games to enter a tournament for a quarter-million-dollar grand prize

Is it “as good as the original?” Honestly, who the hell cares? We’ve got bigger fish to fry. Namely, the biggest question I had going into the movie: is Jack Harlow a better rapper, actor, or basketball player?

We’re going to break down his performance in the movie along with a few of his accumulated basketball moments from the past few years to determine if the kid’s got a future or if he should stick to his day job. So, what’s really popping?

Jack Harlow, The Rapper

The version of Jack with whom the audience is most familiar, this is also the longest-running version of the Louisville native — at least, in the public eye (more on that later). After exploding into the upper echelons of rap in 2020 with “What’s Poppin?” Harlow rapidly set about establishing his standing as more of a hitmaker. However, he built his early career on a reputation of being a masterful technician. And while Come Home The Kids Miss You struck some fans as a bit of a sellout, which restored his reputation a few weeks ago with Jackman, his third album under Atlantic/Generation Now.

Harlow’s genuinely respected as a rapper, holding his own alongside his idol Eminem and another young bars specialist, Cordae, on the remix of Em’s “Killer.” He’s consistently proven that he can wrangle any aspect of the craft, from punchline-driven battle rap (“They Don’t Love It” from Jackman) to emotive storytelling (“Gang Gang Gang”) to more conceptual tracks like “Common Ground” and “Questions.” He’s a, well, Jack-of-all-trades on the mic, with the patience and dedication to execute heady material and the charm to make hits like “First Class.”

Jack Harlow, The Actor

This is the version of Jack we know the least about. We’re just getting familiar with Jack Harlow as an actor, between his recent roles in White Men Can’t Jump and last week’s episode of Dave (and his Doritos commercial with Missy Elliott, if you want to get really technical). We’ll definitely have more chances to get acquainted soon enough, though. He’s already secured his second role acting across from Matt Damon and Casey Affleck in their upcoming film project on Apple TV+ so get used to seeing those curls on the screen for at least a little longer.

Now, as far as his performance in White Men Can’t Jump goes… Look, it’s unfair to compare him to Woody Harrelson in the original, but people are going to do it anyway. Jack certainly embodies the oddball you’d slinging his homemade juice cleanses in the Erewhon parking lot, but his Jeremy is a little less intense than Woody’s Billy Hoyle. With that said, he’s magnetic as long as he’s on the screen, with excellent comedic timing and even does a little emotional lifting.

Jack Harlow, The Basketball Player

Back when I interviewed Jack in 2021 ahead of the Bleacher Report Open Run 2-on-2 with Quavo, 2 Chainz, and Lil Baby, I scrolled all the way back to the beginning of his Instagram in search of basketball-related posts to ask about and my patience was rewarded. Before he ever garnered a national audience for his rap career, he was playing in local pickup games in Lousiville — skills that have translated to impressive performances at the Open Run and in 2022’s NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, where he hit a pair of four-pointers and an awkward-looking layup on the break.

At a special screening of White Men Can’t Jump at the Grammy Museum in LA on Friday, the film’s director Calmatic revealed that a basketball trainer accompanied Harlow on tour to ensure that he would look like he could have played at Gonzaga — his character’s alma mater — for real. The training clearly paid off; Jack’s execution looks much smoother (there’s a smooth left-hand reverse that I know a lot of guys can’t pull off) and his shot form is obviously improved. Fortunately, his character’s role in the film is more of a facilitator, allowing Sinqua Walls’ Kamal to shine as the clear focal point of the team’s offense. Jack looks good as a hooper but like his character, there’s little chance he’s going to the G-League anytime soon.

The Verdict

For what it’s worth, the last time I did one of these rapper-turned-actor-in-a-basketball-movie reviews (for Pop Smoke’s performance in Eddie Huang’s Boogie) it was very clear that the subject in question had a lot of help from the editing room. It’s clear from my Friday viewing of White Men that Jack needed way less Hollywood magic to look like a serviceable player, while he proved every bit as confident and competent with his role. However, as both a basketball player and co-star, he’s very much the Pippen to Walls’ Jordan.

When he raps, it’s clear that he’s the star of the show, no matter who else is on the track with him. He’s rarely been outshined, and he’s proven to be equally adept at every necessary facet of the game. He’s definitely a better rapper than anything else.

That doesn’t mean he should hang up his jersey anytime soon; I’d love to see his new-and-improved game in another Open Run-style event — or even at the Crew League this summer.

Meanwhile, I have no reservations about checking out his future film roles. If he manages to improve his acting game the way he’s stepped up as a rapper and a hooper, he’ll be a legitimate entertainment triple threat for the foreseeable future.

White Men Can’t Jump is now streaming on Hulu. Jackman is out now on Generation Now/Atlantic.
