Charli XCX Hilariously Explained How She And Lorde Almost Dressed Up As Each Other For Halloween

Halloween weekend is upon us and we’ve already seen a number of artists showcasing their spookiest and cutest costumes thus far. Doja Cat got into the spirit dressing up as Elvira, Doechii totally smashed it with her take on Pamela Anderson’s Barb Wire, and in a move nobody saw coming, Charlie Puth was an Oreo Cookie alongside Elmo’s M&M’s cookie. But Charli XCX and Lorde had a plan to break the Halloween internet, and it almost worked. Rather, the almost tried it.

“So, I thought about going as Lorde for Halloween this year…and like actually doing a cover of ‘Royals,’” Charli XCX tweeted. “And so I text Lorde and told her the idea and she was like ‘Ok, iconic. I’m going as Charli XCX.’ And then we both cackled and then we were like, ‘Ok cute’ yeah but actually cba [can’t be arsed] maybe next year. So just so you guys know THE THOUGHT was there and we KNOW it’s legendary butttt we’re just lazy lol.”

Perhaps Charli can strike another deal with the devil and make it happen before October 31st rolls around?

Some of the artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Sech Teases A New Era In His Career With The Release Of His ‘Ya Casi Vienen’ EP

Sech has returned with his new EP Ya Casi Vienen that was released today (October 28). The Panamanian superstar pushes reggaeton music to the next level in his latest single “Foto En Panty.”

Sech broke through in 2019 with this global hit “Otro Trago.” The song hit No. 1 on Billboard‘s Hot Latin Songs chart while impressively peaking at No. 34 on the Hot 100 chart. Sech has since become one of the most popular artists to emerge from Panama. Considering that reggaeton music has roots in Panama that are often overlooked, Sech’s success is a reminder of the country that helped shape the genre. He has since collaborated with artists like Bad Bunny, J Balvin, and Manuel Turizo.

This past year, Sech remained mostly quiet on the music front outside of his single “Noche De Teteo” in May. The Ya Casi Vienen EP is his first major release since last year’s 42 album. The title translates to “They’re Almost Coming” in English, which hints to the new music that’s coming in the next phase of Sech’s career.

“When I started thinking about the next song I wanted to release, I couldn’t choose one, because I love all of them,” Sech said in a statement. “I decided that I had to present these four tracks at the same time. With them I present a new era of Sech, where much more than music will come. I hope you enjoy it as much or more than me.”

The EP features four new tracks by Sech. The lead single “Foto En Panty” is beast of a reggaeton banger. The rhythm switches up from fast to frenetic as Sech sings about empowering women to post whatever kinds of photos they want to on Instagram. If their boyfriend doesn’t like that bikini photo on social media, that’s too bad, he preaches. Sech also branches out to dance music with the alluring “Party De Electronica.” Dembow beats meet electronica influences as Sech’s soulful voice shines.

Rob McElhenney Got Emotional When Wrexham Fans Started Singing About Him Saving The Soccer Club

Speaking as a fan of the New York Mets (bounced from the first round of the playoffs after winning 101 games) and Carolina Panthers (2-5 record, fired head coach, traded best player), I believe this to be true: it’s dumb to care about sports. But then you see a video of Rob McElhenney getting teary-eyed after fans of his soccer team start singing about him, and you remember why you devote so much time and stress to a jersey.

In 2020, Ryan Reynolds and the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Mythic Quest co-creator purchased Wrexham A.F.C., as chronicled in FX’s Welcome to Wrexham. The acquisition of the team by two Americans surprisingly seems to be a hit among Red Dragons supporters. In a clip posted to Twitter, “an emotional McElhenney appeared to be in tears while drinking with fans in a local pub. The Wrexham faithful sung his name – and referenced Reynolds’ famous antihero Deadpool – as part of a chant dedicating to their new owners for saving their stadium from crumbling down,” reports the Daily Mail.

The lyrics go, “Less than a mile from the centre of town, a famous old stadium was crumbling down. No one invested so much as a penny, so bring on the Deadpool and Rob McElhenney.” You can watch the video below.

Sports are good.

Jason Bateman’s Netflix Followup To ‘Ozark’ Followup Sounds Like It’s Coming Together

Do you miss Ozark? Of course you do. You are reading this post, after all, and you’ve seen the savage and shattering ending to the series. Showrunner Chris Mundy knows this and has been upfront about possible offshoots that have been “talked about a bunch,” but nothing is explicitly in the cards. Further, Jason Bateman revealed that his door isn’t entirely closed to the possibility of more Marty Byrde f*ck ups, but we really shouldn’t hold our breath to see anything soon.

That’s the case even though all Ozark devotees (including Ralph Macchio, as he recently told us) “miss it already.” Yet there’s some good news, which is that Jason Bateman is working on his next Netflix series, which is called Black Rabbit. Little to nothing is known about this show, other than that Bateman will star, executive produce, and direct. In addition, Young/New Pope star Jude Law will also executive produce and star. This sounds like the ultimate crossover but also something entirely different.

Deadline has the sparse details thus far:

Jason Bateman and Jude Law have teamed to develop Black Rabbit, a one-hour limited series for Netflix, Deadline has learned. Both are attached to star and executive produce and Bateman is set to direct. The drama hails from Bateman and Michael Costigan’s Aggregate Films, Law and Ben Jackson’s Riff Raff Entertainment, Zach Baylin and Kate Susman’s Youngblood Pictures and Automatik Entertainment.

Sooo not much there yet, but have hope. Bateman’s not only a force in front of the camera but also behind it. Speaking of which, have you seen The Outsider on HBO yet? If you have not, there’s something to tide you over until we hear more about Black Rabbit. More good TV is coming, y’all. We simply gotta be patient.

Student helps create a 3D printed, microplastic-eating fish that can clean lakes

Robots might have a place in the natural world after all, especially when they can help save it.

Participants of this year’s Natural Robotics Contest were asked to design a robot that was inspired by an animal and could help the world. The winner would have their idea brought to life by a group of senior engineers and scientists.

While entries included mosquitos, eagles and bears (oh my), the grand prize title was claimed by student Eleanor Mackintosh for her microplastic-eating fish, affectionately and fittingly named Gillbert.

Gillbert’s design includes layers of mesh attached to his gills, which make up most of his flooded head unit and sieve out tiny particles. He also comes with a fully functioning fishy tail.Once he’s 3D printed, he becomes just about the cutest looking robo-carp ever. I almost expect him to start singing “Don’t Worry Be Happy.” Maybe that’ll be a Gillbert 2.0 feature

Much like a real fish, Gillbert swims with his mouth agape. Once he’s full of water, his mouth closes and water is pushed through his gills while his body retains any remaining microplastics, thus leaving local lakes cleaner than before he came swimming along.

Microplastics pose a huge threat to the ecosystems of bodies of water. In addition to a commitment to less pollution, we have to find ways to eliminate what remains. So far, people have come up with several ingenious solutions, such as giant trash-collecting fences that work as a dam, as well as other plastic-eating robots similar to Gillbert.

Humans can do a lot of collective damage, but our creativity can do so much more collective good.

It’s never too early to talk to your kids about sexual assault. Here’s how.

This story originally appeared on 01.26.18

Sarah Shanley Hope’s story is frighteningly common.

As a kid, she went over to her neighbor’s house one day to play with her best friend. While there, her friend’s older brother sexually assaulted both of them.

Hope was only 6 years old.

Being so young, she didn’t know how to verbalize what happened or how to process it. She carried the pain with her for years, until she had daughters of her own.

She told her own girls from the beginning, “You’re in charge of your body.” But at times, the message seemed to ring hollow.

Mostly, Hope recalls her older daughter, now 8, rolling her eyes, having heard the refrain so many times before: “There goes mom being overprotective, again.

But one day Hope got a call from school. A boy in the class had been caught inappropriately touching some of the girls. Her own daughter had even had a run-in with him.

“He kept hanging on me even after I said ‘stop’! It was so annoying,” Hope recalls her daughter saying.

Hope decided that, finally, it was time to tell her daughter her own story — her own “Me Too” moment.

“I finally said, honey, the reason I’m paying such close attention to this is that mommy had an experience when I was a kid, where someone did something to my body that wasn’t OK.”

“I don’t want you to feel badly inside like I did,” she continued, according to her impassioned post on Medium. “I want you to know that we can always talk about the hard and confusing stuff.”

An uncomfortable but, sadly, necessary conversation. You can watch what happens next in the video below:

7 might seem like a very young age to tackle such a weighty conversation. But it might be necessary even earlier than that.

The National Center for Victims of Crime estimates that 20% of women (and 5-10% of men) recall an incident of sexual abuse as a child, with kids between 7 and 13 being the most vulnerable.

Those are horrifying statistics for any parent, so horrifying that we might wish we could be with our kids every second of the day to protect them from the horrors of the world. But we can’t.

The best we can do is make sure they are aware of the danger and armed with knowledge about what to do if they need help. That includes direct talks — like the ones Hope has had with her kids — and modeling proper boundaries in our own lives.

In Hope’s case, sharing her story has triggered a wave of positive change in her own community. She says several of her parent friends have called her recently for advice about how to have these conversations with their kids of all ages. And that’s definitely something we need more of.

“We can’t undo the harm,” Hope writes. “What we can do is choose discomfort over hiding from the pain — or worse, repeating it.”

It’s Not Just ‘House Of The Dragon’: Lots Of Your Favorite Shows Aren’t Coming Back Until 2024 (At The Earliest)

As House of the Dragon wrapped its epic first season, fans of the Game of Thrones prequel series were hit with some bad news: Season 2 probably won’t arrive until 2024. But it looks like they won’t be the only ones waiting.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Andor are also looking at significantly long waits until their second seasons drop. However, unlike House of the Dragon which won’t start filming until next year, Rings of Power has already started production for its next season, and Andor will get the ball rolling in November. While it’s good to hear that the new seasons are definitely happening, that won’t change the long production schedules, which are becoming the norm for prestige series thanks to the final season of Game of Thrones. (Is there anything it didn’t ruin?)

Via The Hollywood Reporter:

The 2011 fantasy drama’s first seven seasons aired on an annual basis. Then fans waited two years for the climactic eighth and final season in 2019. Many slammed the final run from a creative standpoint, but the six episodes looked like feature films and broke ratings records. The season arguably set a new standard for how much money, effort and time can go into a season, as well as proving that a long wait won’t deter fans from coming back to a highly anticipated show.

Of course, those waits are nothing compared to what Stranger Things fans have been going through. Thanks to the pandemic, there was a massive three year gap between seasons three and four, and according to THR, the wait for the fifth and final season could take just as long. We’re talking 2025 until we’re treated to another round of incredibly descriptive squelching. That show loves a good squelch.

Yes, Replying To Your Ex Is A ‘Bad Idea,’ According To Dove Cameron’s New Single

If you didn’t learn anything from Mercury retrograde, Dove Cameron‘s new single “Bad Idea” is here to serve as your reminder. The pop singer’s new track produced by frequent collaborator Evan Blair (“Boyfriend” and “Breakfast“) chronicles the addictive nature of toxic romantic love.

The lyrics chronicle several emotionally exhaustive scenarios that many of us, unfortunately, find ourselves in. As Cameron sultrily sings in her signature low register, “I know I shouldn’t do it / but I’m gonna do it / know exactly where I shouldn’t go I’m running to it,” and, “We made it out the first time / still in love and half alive / we didn’t die but no guarantees this time,” it cuts deep — deep enough for you to examine what role you played in your own heartbreak.

In a press release (as Nylon notes), Cameron shares how the song came to be, stating, “This song was inspired by a text I got that was so intense, and such a bad idea, that I had to go straight into the studio the next morning to write about it. ‘Bad Idea’ is the moment before diving into what could potentially be a severe crash-and-burn but deciding to take the risk anyway.”

Fans feel Cameron might just have another hit on her hands, with one tweeting, “the holy trifecta is out.” Sharing in the excitement of the song’s rave reviews, Cameron promises a new album is certainly on the way.

There’s no word on when we can expect a full project from the former Disney star, but we will be ready when it drops. For now, we’ll just sit back and enjoy the singles Cameron releases.

Listen to “Bad Idea” above.

You Should Really Watch Apple TV+’s ‘Bad Sisters’

Bad Sisters asks: what if the March sisters from Louisa May Alcott’s novel “Little Women” had a horrific brother-in-law and plotted his murder?

Run, do not walk to your couch to watch Apple TV+’s Bad Sisters, a moody murder mystery that is uproariously funny but simultaneously a thorough study of women’s trauma. Filled with gorgeous Irish landscapes, staggering performances, and cozy sweaters, Bad Sisters is a perfect fall binge.

The series follows the Garvey sisters, a family of five sisters in Ireland. Their sister, Grace, is married to John Paul, an asshole who treats their sister horrifically. Grace’s sisters plot to kill the man, seeing it as the only way to free themselves, but more importantly, their sister, who is stuck in an abusive relationship with a monster. Meanwhile, an insurance agent, following the mysterious death of John Paul in a future timeline, suspects the sisters in his death and is on a mission to prove it.

The black comedy from Sharon Horgan, Dave Finkel, and Brett Baer is based on the Flemish series, Clan. All ten episodes of the Irish black comedy are available on Apple TV. Here are all the reasons why you should watch it.

Ireland

Ireland’s tourism either was behind this or it owes the show a debt. The beautiful, incredibly green island of Ireland has never looked more appetizing than it does in Bad Sisters, which is set in a small, charming town on the coast. The homes, ranging from cottage-core to modern minimalist, are gorgeous against the greenest grass you’ve ever seen and the rocky beaches will make you want to dive off a cliff into the water even if it’s freezing.

Class Bang

Bad Sisters accomplishes the impossible: it gets its audiences to not only root for people who are plotting a murder, it gets its audience to agree that it is completely reasonable and rational, the only way out. Danish actor — and star of 2017’s The Square — Claes Bang plays John Paul Williams, the nightmare brother-in-law whom the Garvey sisters spend most of the series trying to kill. It is not hyperbolic to say that John Paul is one of the vilest characters to appear on any screen, and he is probably among the most horrific characters in any story ever written since the beginning of storytelling. John Paul is an abusive misogynist pig, to say the least, but he knows precisely when to turn on the charm. It’s not an easy role for an actor to take: this character truly makes Joffrey Baratheon seem like Tom Hanks, but Bang took it and went as far as possible.

Women–-

One of the most iconic moments in modern cinema is Saorise Ronan as Jo March saying “Women, they have minds, and they have souls, as well as just hearts. And they’ve got ambition, and they’ve got talent, as well as just beauty,” in 2019’s Little Women.

Bad Sisters, being about sisters, truly embodies this. The story centers on five sisters, all who have their own storylines within the main plot. Sharon Horgan’s Eva is a child-free career woman, who essentially took on the role of parental figure after their parents died in a car wreck. Ursula is struggling in her marriage and motherhood. Bibi is still suffering from the trauma of losing an eye in a car wreck (that was John Paul’s fault). The youngest, Becky, is trying to get her sisters to see her as an equal, not as the baby. Grace, the wife of the dreaded John Paul, suffers verbal and physical abuse and has complex and realistic feelings and reactions to it. The series gives each character her own thoughtful, unique arc, without using any stereotypes. Although each sister has her own individual story, the show is essentially about their unbreakable bond despite their differences. Jo March would be proud.

Clever use of managing multiple timelines

I can’t help but make references to Little Women. Remember back in 2019 when some people (mostly men) complained that Greta Gerwig’s Little Women was confusing because of its multiple timelines that shifted throughout the film? Bad Sisters moves forward and back in time similarly from scene to scene, but instead of using Florence Pugh’s bang status as a marker of the time, the frame pulls back, revealing a reel of film. The film moves forward or backward, then focuses back on the scene. Depending on whether the film moved, you know exactly where you are in the story immediately. This is by no means meant to suggest that Pugh’s bangs were a bad way of telling time: both strategies are perfect in their own unique ways.

Gleeson Family Supremacy

At this point, the Gleeson family is to Ireland what the Skarsgård family is to Sweden. In Bad Sisters, Brian Gleeson – son of Brendan, brother of Domhnall – plays Tom, the manic insurance agent who will do anything to avoid paying Grace’s insurance claim following John Paul’s death. This includes breaking into homes, stealing trash, and generally cosplaying as a goofy but weirdly savvy Irish Sherlock Holmes.

When Does Rihanna’s New Album Come Out?

To say that Rihanna’s return to putting out new music this week was long-anticipated is an understatement. With the release of “Lift Me Up” from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Soundtrack, Rihanna marked her first new solo release since her wildly popular album Anti dropped in early 2016. “Lift Me Up” takes a somber turn, set to heavenly strings as Rihanna sings a tune — which she co-wrote with Ryan Coogler, Ludwig Göransson, and Tems — dedicated to the memory of Chadwick Boseman. There have been reports that Rihanna has yet another song coming on the Wakanda Forever Soundtrack, too. That begs the question: when will she release a new album to follow Anti?

When Does Rihanna’s New Album Come Out?

Rihanna’s high-profile feature on the Wakanda Forever Soundtrack would seem like the best way to dip her toes in the water ahead of a new album release. Considering she’s also slated to perform at the Super Bowl Halftime Show in February, she will have the best promotional vehicles to announce a new album at her disposal. The Super Bowl performance already has the music world buzzing about a potential stadium tour — something she hasn’t done either since the Anti Tour in 2016.

And let’s be honest: it’d be a missed opportunity of sorts for Riri to not announce a new album surrounding the Super Bowl appearance. Lately, she’s been heavily focused on her “Savage x Fenty Vol. 4” fashion show, which arrives on November 9. This should give her plenty of time to start focusing on an album rollout in the lead-up to the Super Bowl from there. Right?
